FATH, citizens of the United States, residing in Philadelphia and State ,of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Forming Sealed Wrapped Packages, of whichl the following isa specification.
rl`his invention relates to machines for applying wrappers to-packages for theV purpose of forming what are known as sealed wrapped packages, and is an improvement on that type of box covering machines set forth in Letters Patent granted to Philip S. Smith, No. 691,329, dated January 14, 1902., and No.` 778,805, dated December 27, 1904, and is an adaptation of machines of this class for the special purpose set forth.

y A further feature of the invention is directed to a mechanism for removing packages from the machine after the covering operation has been completed. and the other to the like 'frame at the, rear ofthe machine. 1When the three-armed lever y84 .is rocked, theN frames 80 moves simultaneously to and from the center of the machine, and movable with eacli frame are the two side lap tuck-in fingers 83 mounted thereon.
On the right and left sidesof the table l are plates 91 mounted in guides 92 in a manner similar to the plates 74, and carrying at their inner ends rollers 93,-in va plane below .the rollers 76 and at right angles to said rollers. Depending from the inner ends of the plates 91 are brackets 94 similar to the brackets 79 but shorter.y In each bracket 79 and 94 vis mounted a horizontal sliding frame 95 to the inner end of which is fixed horizontal end-tuck-in fingers-96, the four fingers lying in the same horizontal plane. Just below each frame v95 is a second horif zontal sliding frame 97 each supporting on its inner end a presser `block 98 from the exterior side of -which projects a lug 99. In the operation of the machine', the lv vorm 39 is rotated continuously and through its connection 'toj the worm wheel 40 imparts continuous rotation to the vertical shat't 41v and the cam drums 4Q and 8 6 thereon. At each. rotation ofthe drums, when they ar- 'rive at the position shown in Fig..1, a pack-V age B which in the-present instance is a box` made ot' palper board -filledf-with merchandise,'and closed with a cover thatv projects over the'box and extends to the bottom thereof.. This box with its bottom uppermost and a blank A adhering to the top of' the cover is placed by an attendant against thev `under side vof plungers 28, 50, and against the'gage plates 67, which latter exactly positipnthe box relatively to the plungers. As thus placed the flaps a1, a4, of the wrapperproject laterally from the box as shown in Figs. l, 2 and 8. Rotation of the cam\drum. 42 now causes the levers 29 and 60 to swing downwardly, simultaneously depressing the plungers and the gage fingers, the latter maintaining the box in position against said 'plungers during its passage to theplaten 71.
As soon as the box and the wrapperhave reached or nearly reached the platen, the
gage fingers 67 will pause, the plungers however continue their downward movement and press the box and wrapper against the platento hold them securely inv position against movement during their passage throughthe wrappingmechanism.' The approach of a box and its wrapper to the platen brings the tfwo'fiaps a1 of the wrapper into contact with lthe brushes 78, which turnup said flaps against corresponding sides' of the box. The plungers, box, wrapper,- and platen now move downwardly together, the flaps all previously turned up by the brushes are by the rollers 76 pressed against the' sides of'said bx into close contact therewith to causethe adhesion of said'ilaps, see
Fig. 9. "As soon as'the box and wrapper have passed belowv the rollers 76 theqdown- -ward movement is arrested momentarily,
during whichv pause the slidingframes 80 are moved inwardlywith their tuck-in finucovered' sides of the box, as in Figs. 3 and 10. Upon withdrawal 'of the frames 80, the downward movement of the box continues. The two flaps a4 now encounter the rollers 93, by means of which said flaps are turned see Fig.,11. The stoppage of the plunger 20 is for an instant only and is brought about. by the lever which has previously moved upward av predetermined distance and there held duringthe downward movement of the plunger. At the proper time, the pin 63 on the cross head 48 encounters the plate 62 on said lever 60 and preventsurther movement ot the plunger 50 so long as the lever 60 continues in a fixed position, see Fig. d. rl`he stoppage of the plunger 50 is 'to permit the end laps a, 0L5 of the wrapper to be folded over the ,upper surface or bottom ot the box B. This `folding is accomplished by means of the endtuck-in fingers 96, alll tour of which move inwardly at the saine time when the sleeve 103 is' elevated by the cam drum 86 and lever 109. lWhen said sleeve is lifted it raises the pins 106, and-through the connections heretotore described, slide thefraines carryturning the end flaps thereover and grippin'g the box. For the purpose ot insuring the proper folding of the end laps a3, a5, it is ,desirable that two of them, as a5, be turned before the other two a3, so that the latter mayoverlie the former as in lFig. 111. This will prevent interference ot the laps and secure a smooth tight sealing at all times. 'llhe pinion 121 is driven by al gear wheel 122, on one side oli which is a pinion 123 with which a short toothed segment 121 mountedqon the vertical shatt l1 123, reacts and returns ithe plunger head 11e f Wto its inactive position, the shock ot the quick return being prevented by a dash pot 125 into which the head 11d enters. lnY order that the pinion 123 may always be in position tor the segment 12d to engage therewith without the respective teeth clashing, a. positive stop is provided to .insure the return of the plunger always to the same position. rll`his stop is in the torna ot a pawl 126 pivoted to a fixed part ot the Atrame and held by a spring against the plunger rod 115, a tooth 127 on said pawl engaging a notch 128 in the rod when the pusherfhead 1141 has been retracted by the spring into its rearmost position.
Yllhe pusher head moves slowly for the purpose ot ejecting the sealed wrapped package, as distinguished from known types ol spring impelled or shooting plungers, such movement being desirable because the bon or other envelop is a hlled bos and has more or less weight, depending on the nature ot its contents, and` therefore the iner tia of this weighted package must be overcome by a comparatively slow movement ot the eiector, otherwise the latter it moved rapidly is liable to break through the wall ot the package and spoil the same. 'lhe return movement ol the pusher head may be as rapid fas desired and tor this reason-the reo spring 120 is provided as a simple, e`tli eient,
and rapid motor tor-, retracting the pusher. The piangere; 28jf`a7nd 50 together have three unetions inthe-operation ot' the maoil 'which `ie to slamp tho les wrapped package, the combination withv package-and wrapper upon the platen and hold it`thereon during its passage through the Wrapper applying mechanism; the second is -to push -the package and the platen through said mechanism, and the third is to assist certain devices to fold and seal the end laps of the wrapper over the upper surface of' the, package, the last function being performed by the plunger 50 while the plunger 28 maintains the package in position. plunger are substantially the same as the upper surface of the package so as to bear. upon the inturned laps of the wrapper, while the plunger. 28 though suiiiciently large to bear upon said upper surface of the package, and hold the same stationary against the tension of the spring 72- without breaking through the package, during the separation of the plungers, is small to permit the end laps of the wrapper being turned in and sealed without coming into contact with said plunger.

In a machine for forming sealed wrapped packages, the combination with wrapper applying instrumentalities, and a package supporting platen maintained in-elevated position by a yielding pressure, of a twopart plunger movable as a. unit toward said platen to grasp the top and bottom of a package and an adhesively coated wrapper therebetween and carry them through the Wrapper applying instrumentalities, the lower surface of 'one of said plunger parts havin` substantially th'e same dimensions as, and the like surface of the other plunger part being smaller than, the .upper surface of the package'and lying wholly within the margin of the larger plunger, said platen yieldingly supporting the package and cooperating with one of said plunger parts to press and seal the folded package.
