Be it known that l, THOMAS CARROLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cash-Registers, of which l declare the following to be a full,` clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to cash registers and has for a main object to provide an improved mechanism of the class described which will include a registering device and printing devices.
A* second object is to provide an improved construction for preventing an operation of the counter when desired, as for example in connection with certain kinds of special transactions.
An improved printing mechanism including multiple type is provided which is normally at an intermediate position and therefore is arranged to take only a minimum movement to bring any desired type to printing position.
Another object is to provide an improved and automatic reversing device for an.ink ribbon.
It may be desired at times to use the machine without the printing attachmentf'tnd I provide means brought into operation automatically by the removal of the record holding means for preventing the operation of the printing mechanism.
The provision of the removable record holding means also has the function of providing for a segregated analysis of transactions. By the provision of the detachable means each clerk may be provided with an individual record strip holding means, and upon operating the machine he may insert his particular record holding means in the machine and receive upon the same a printed record of the transaction handled by him. In this way each clerk would have a printed record made by the machine of his findividual sales. The machine may also be dsed to provide a separate record strip holding means for different cashiers when on duty, and as long as a cashier is on duty his record holding means may be permitted to remain attached to the machine, but on leaving the post the cashier would'then detach hisrecord holding means and the new cashier going on duty would substitute for the same his own record holding means. In this manner the proprietor of an establishment employing a machine of this type will be enabled to ascertain just how muehof the days business was handled by the different clerks or cashiers in his employ.
Viith these and incidental objects in view, the lnvention consi-sts in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the essential elements of which are set forth in appended claims and a preferred form of embodiment of which is hereinafter specifically described with reference to the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification.

The usual tablet indicators 17 are provided having their stems resting on the eX- treme rear ends of the keys. Each of the keys 10 has a slot 18 in which a rod 19 of a key coupler 20 is adapted to move and therel'iy couple together any depressed keys. lieferring now to Fig. 5 it will be seen that l provide a cam 21 having a depressionwhich normally engages an anti-friction roller 22 carried by a pivoted rod 23, this mechanism being duplicated at the two ends of the machine. When the keys reach the lower end of the stroke 'Y nroiecting arm 26 of the key coupler abuts against a cam device carried by rod 24 so that the coupler is then shifted laterally a sufficient distance to carry the cams 2l from under the rollers 22. Onthe instant that the key starts to return the arms 23 are allowed to drop back to normal position thereby carrying the segments 16 out of gear with the pinions 25 and this occurs before the segments have started their reverse oscillation due to the return of the keys. It Will be seen that this provides a one Way connection between the segments and the counter wheels.
So much of the machine as has been de-Y scribed is shown inthe prior patents and I will now pass to a description of my present improvements and will first describe the so called throw out mechanism for the counter.
The machine is designed to take care of different classes of transactions and some of these such as Charge sales Money paid out and f Money received on account should obviously not be included in the register but a printed record of the same is desired. I therefore provide means controlled by special keys representing the desired transactions for preventing the operation of the counter and to this end means are provided for coupling the arms 23 to a counter carrying frame so that they will move together. Tn Fig. 5 I have shown the counter frame indicated by numeral 31. This is pivoted loosely on the rod 11. Mount- .ed on the counter frame 31 is a bell crank 100 lever 32 pivoted at 33 and having an antifriction roller 34 at one end and notches 35 and 36 near the other end. The notch 35 is normally surrounding a pin 37 carried by the counte` frame. The notch 36 is nor- 105 mally over a flange 37 on the arm 23. Special keys 38 are provided for the desired special transactions and these keys are also journaled en rod 11. Their rearwardly tending portions 39 have cam projections 40 110 adapted when the keys are depressed to engage the anti-friction roller 34 and elevate the same therebyrocking the bell crank 32 around its pivot 33 and serving to engage the notch 36 with the flange 37'* and to dis- 115 engage the'- pin on the counter frame from the notch 35. I provide therefore levers 51 .one for each of the special keys which are also journaled on the main rod 11 and which serve to support special indicators 52. These indicators are arranged to be slightly elevated through connections set from the special keys so as to couple them to the key coupler which then provides for the furthervelevation of the said indicators. An arm 53 is provided journaled on the pinA 54 on the counter frame .and normally pressed forward as shown by a Spring. This arm 53 carries on the lower end thereof a pin 55 which is adaptedvto be engaged by differently gradukeys so that when any one of the keys 38 is depressed the arm 53 will be rocked rear- Such rearward rocking serves to bring a fiange 57 on the said arm over the forward end of the desired one of the levers 51. To prevent a depression of more than one lspecial key at an operation I provide a key arrester shown in Fig. 5a. It will be seen in Fig. 5 thatthe special keys have depending projections 61 and these are adapted to engage the.spool shaped part 62 carried loosely on a rod 63. The depressed portion of the spool is only wide enough to allow one special key projection 61 to be moved to the arms 23 and this.

The printing mechanism is best shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. I provide plates 71 one for each bank of value keys at the extreme rear of the machine. These plates 71 have cut therein slots one for each key of the Abank and the slots have differently graduated inclined portions 72. In the normal position these-slots are directly over the keys 10 and it will be clear that the depression of the forward end of any value key will raise the rearward end thereof causing it to pass up the corresponding vslot 72 and thereby cause a lateral movement of ,the plate 71, these plates being supported by a pin and "slot connection 73 to allow such lateral movement. Each `plate is connected to a link 74 and these links 74 are connected to bell crank levers 75 journaled on arod 76. Connected to the levers 75 are vertical arms 77 having segment racks 7 8 as integral parts thereof, the arms being bent as shown in Fig. 2. As shown in Fig. 3 the racks 78- mesh with segments 79 which carry on the front ends thereof separate type .bars 80`- These type bars are separately carried by pin and slot connections oni the segments 79 each type barhaving thereon two numerals. The movement of the type bars to cause an impression on the record material is accomplished through the agency of hammers 81 these hammers being mounted on a shaft 82 and having a slot 83 in which a pin 84 of a lever 85 is adapted to ride. The lever85 is journaled on a pin, 86 and has a projection 87 with a notch 88 in which a lever 89 shown in Fig. 3 but better shown inFig. 4 normally rests. When the lever 89 is rocked t0 carry it away from the notch -88 the leverv 85 may rotate under spring tension thereby causing the pins 84 to ride down in the ,slots 83 and thereby throwing the hammers friction roller 95 carried by an arm 96 rigidly mounted on the shaft supporting the, key coupler and which is indicated -by numeral 98. YVhen the coupler is raised it will be clear that the roller 95 will ride up-I wardly in the slot 94 and serve to rock the bell crank lever 92 around its pivot 93 thereby tensioning spring 91. As shown in Fig. 4 spring 91 passes through a hole in a flange 99 on the lever 85 and is provided with' a screw 100 the head of which will not pass through the hole in the said flange. It will be seen that in the normal position 1li' lthe i parts shown in Fig. 4 the spring 91 is under no tension but when the lever 92 is rocked as before described the spring will be tensioned and will bring the head of the screw 100 against a (lange 99, movement of the flange being prevented by the lever 89. The arm 96 is provided witha projection 101 adapted to engage as the coupler reaches the end of its upward stroke with a pin 102 on the lever 89. As this lever 89 is journalecl on the pin 103 it will be seen that at the end of the key coupler stroke the` leverwill be raised away from the notch 8 8 of the arm 87 and the spring 91 will then throw the type hammers 81 quickly forward to take an impression. When the keys return to normal position the lever 92 is reversely rocked and the lever 85 thenereturns to the position shown in Fig. 4 thereby carrying back the type hammers 81 through an arm 104 carrying a rack 105 engaging a pinion 106 on shaft 82. This arm 104 i's moved forward by the hammer stroke and is retamed by key coupler rod 19.
I have beforestated that each type cnrrier has two different type thereon but this causes no confusion of impression as the platen roller is of so small a radius as to curve away from the type not set for operation.
The record' holding mechanism is provided to be easily removed from the machine and in such case it is not desired that the printing hammers should strike the type. The record mechanism includes a holding roller 111 and a winding and feeding roller 112 as well as the platen roller 113. These rollers are mounted on pins carried by a plate 111 best shown in Fig. 4. The said plate has a cut away portion 115 near the bottom thereof which is adapted to surround a rod 1!6. A head 117 on the rod 116 prevents lateral movement of the plate 114. It will be clear that the plate 114 may be Considered as pivoted on the rod 116 and means are provided For retaining the top of the plate in its desired position. This means in.- cludes a latch *118 adapted to be laterally moved manually when desired in whichcase the yplate lli may be rocked around rod 116 through a projection 119 at the top of the plate. lt will be seen that the plate and the rollers carried thereby are a separable structurc which may be easily removed by simply throwing the latch 118. A retaining pawl 136 is provided to prevent backward movement of ratchet 135 and this is carried by a pin on plate 114i It will be seen from this mechanism that when the coupler is elevated arm 96 will be rocked thereby rockin lever 92 and drawing arm 131 rearwar ly.v This rearward motion will cause the actuating pawl 134 to move backward over the teeth of ratchet 135 and on the reverse movement 100 are shown in Fig. 4. Two rollers 1-11 and 142 are provided which serve alternately as feeding rollers for the ribbon 143. This plate 1-17 has mounted thereon two pins 161 125 167, the pawl 166 being adapted to engage 130 ratchet 145 for feeding roller 142 and the pawl 167 being adapted to engage ratchet 144 for feeding roller 141. Connected to the plate 165 by a pin 171 is a link 172 which is also connected by a pin 173 to the bell crank lever 92.
It will be remembered that lever 92 is oscillated at each operation of the machine by the raising and lowering of the coupler and it will be clear that as plate 165 is connected by link 172 to the lever 92 that the plate 165 will be reciprocated at each operation of the machine and thereby cause a feed in one direction or the other of the ink ribbon. When the ribbon is completely unwound from one of the spools as is shown in Fig. 4 a succeeding operation of the machine will cause the pawl which is at the time operative, here shown as pawl 166 to engage the tooth of ratchet 145 and en. deavor to operate the same. The pawls 166 and 167 are provided with extensions 181 and 182 and these extensions are connected by a long'spring 183. 'When the parts are inthe position of Fig. 4 and an operation 0f the machine is made the pawl 166 will as stated engage ratchet 145 but will be unableto rotate the same as the ribbon is completely unwound from the spool 141. The pawl 166 will thereby rock around its pivot pin and throw the carrying plate 147 to its other position this being possible through the yielding of spring 154 which will cause the arm 153 to then engage notch 152 and hold the plate 147 in its new position with pawl 167 adapted to engage the teeth of ratchet 144. It will be seen that this mech anism provides an automatic reversing device for the ink ribbon.
To print characters on the record strip indicating the special key if one has been depressed I provide mechanism shown in Fig. 6. The special keys 38 have edges 191 adapted to engage a rod 192 carried by arm 193 the arms being journaledk on rod 63. The arms 193 are rigidly connected to a vertical bar 194 and this is connected through a link 195 to a bell crank 196 having at the forward end thereof a plurality of type carriers 197. It will be understood that the edges 191 of the special keys 38 are so shaped as to differentially rock the arms 193 and thereby bring the desired type 197 to the printing point. It will be seen that although there are only three special keys in the machine as shown I have provided four type 197. The type' which is normally at prlnting position is adapted to cause an arbitrary character such as a dash to be printed thereby indicating that a cash sale has been made. When however one of the special keys is depressed the corresponding type is brought toprinting position and a letter indicating transaction is printed on the strip.
It is desired to provide means for alining the type carriers while they are being printed from and to this end I provide the segments 79 with a series of notches 201 as shown in Fig. 3. A plurality of pawls 202 carried rigidly by a shaft 203 serve to engage the notches 201 and to exactly place the type. These pawls are adapted to be rocked into and away from the notches by a plate 204 (see Fig. 5) also rigidly carried..75 by shaft 203. This plate 204 has a cam slot- 205 cut therein and a pin 206 movable with the coupler rides in the said slot. It will be clear that as the said coupler is elevated pin 206 will finally' reach the cam portion of slot 205 and rock the plate 204 rearwardly. This will evidently serve to depress V`the pawls 202 into the proper notches 201 and lock the type until an impression has been taken therefrom.

These arms 211 are fastened to the plates 71 and bent around and under the keys. The forward ends of the arms are bifurcated and in the bifurcations levers 212 are adapted to engage, thereby lockingv the plates 71 against lateral movement. The levers 212 have at the forward ends thereof lateral rods 213 extending under the keys of the corresponding bank. It will be seen that while the bent arms 211 are normally locked against lateral movement by the levers 212 that a depression of any key in the bank will depress the pin 213 thereby elevating the rear end of a lever 212 enough to allow lateral movement of the arm 211 and consequently to allow" the printing de- 105 vices to be set.
It is desired that the mechanism should be locked while the counter is being returned to zero and mechanism for accomplishing this result is shown in Fig. 5. The counter shaft is indicated in this figure by the numeral 221 and it has mounted thereon a disk 222 cut away as indicated at 223. The lever 42 previously referred to has connected at its upper end a bar 224 which has a slot 225 surrounding the shaft 221 a'ndt serving to guide the arm. Pin 226 is mounted in the forward end of the arm 224 and normally rests in the cut away portion 223 of the disk 222. It will be clear that when disk 222 is rotated by turning the shaft 221 to reset the counter that pin 226 will be forced V forwardly thereby rocking the lever 42 and depressing the projection 44 in the path of projection 45 on cam 21. This evidently locks the mechanism as cam 21 is carried ri idly with the key coupler. It will be evident that such rocking of lever 42 will move rearwardly the flange 41 at the bottom of said lever thereby serving to 13e thereby returningr 55 normal position in .which they are locked release a special key if such key has been depressed. 'lhe operation of the machine will be clear from the foregoing descrip` tion but it may be briel'ly described as follows. 'The' depression of the special key serves to the machine until the key has reached its lowermost position through the movement of lever 42 which is cammed by the rear1 end of the special key. When the special key isl depressed the depending projection 56 thereof rocks the arm 53 to' bring a flange 57 over the desired indicator lever 51. When the value key isdepressed and the' counter frame rocked flange 57 slightly raises the rear end of lever 51 to couple the lsame to the coupler so that when the value keys are thereafter' operated the special indicator will 4be raised. The depression of the special key serves to position a printing device through the mechanism shown in Fig. 6. At each Voscillation of lever 92 the ink ribbon feed pawls are reciprocated to slightly feed the record material.
The record holder may be removed by tripping latch 118 when the arm 121 im mediately springs forward and serves to prevent the operation of the printing' hammers. A while the printing takes place by the pawls 202 controlled .from camming arms 201.
It will be seen that the machine is normally adapted to both print and.register the amount indicated on the value keys but it will of course be understood that the print ing devices or the registering device may be dispensed \vitli.3.l/Vhen a special transaction is to be entered the register is automatically prevented from operation. T operation of the printing mechanism may be dispensed with by'inerely tripping the latch thereby permitting the record holding plate tolfemove slightly forward.
While the form of mechanism here shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfil the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to con line the invention t'o thel one form of embodi @ment herein disclosed` for it 1s susceptible of the forward edge embodiment in various forms all comin within the scope of the claims which follow.
