Be it known that I, ALBERT E. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county or- Merrimackand State-of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cam- Cylinders for Knitting Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference "being had to the accompanying drawings,
forming part thereof;
This invention has reference to improve 'ments in cam cylinders for knitting machines and particularly to the stitch cams of saideylinders and parts related to-said stitch cams whereby the needles are guided.
One object of this invention is to so construct a cam cylinder for a knitting machine that the needles may be leveled, that the butts of "the needles may pass the stitch cam without being acted upon thereby.

The invention also consists in such other novel features of construction and combination -of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the'claims.

In the operation of a knitting machine it is sometimes desirable to level the needles, that is to permit the movement of the butts of the needles 'in' their circular path without vertical movement of the needles, as, for instance, in transferring from the knitting of the leg of a stocking to the top thereof. In carrying my invention into practice I accompli'sh this leveling of the needles by dlvidnig both of the stitch cams in parts of which Specification of Letters Patent.

A cam cylinder for knitting machines comprising a cylindrical wall, a pair of stitch cams each consisting of upper and lower members of which the lower members are fixed to said wall and have upper needle leveling edges, a block slidably mounted to move radially between said fixed members ofsaid stitch cams, said upper stitch cam members fixed to said block and having their lower edges in slidable contact with the needle leveling edges of said lower stitch cam members, and a top center cam mounted on said block,

A cam cylinder for knitting machines comprising a cylindrical wall, a pair of needle leveling stitch cam members fixed thereto and spaced apart, abottom center v cam fixed to said Wall and having its upper edge in alinement with the needle leveling members of said stitch cams, a movable carrier above said bottom center cam, and a top center cam and a pair of stitch cam members mounted on said carrier, said latter pair of stitch cam members adapted in a position of said carrier to co'riperate withsaid fixed stitch cam members;
