VALVE-LIFTER.
Application filed June 16, 1914.
To all ti /mm. it may com-am:
Beit known that I, Gnonon G. THAU, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Evart, in the county of Osceola.
5 and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Valve-Litter. which the following is a full, char, and exact description.
My invention relates to a device for re 1 moving or replacing the valves of internal combustion engines, and generally termed a -valve lifter.
An object of my hi ention is to provide a device capable of the necessary adjustments 115 to suit dillerent sized motors and different sized valves.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lever for eliciting the clamping or gripping of the valve, and to provide on the. 20 frame of the de ice a handle so situated relatively to the le er, that one man alone using the device can so manipulate it to remove or repl ce a alvc from a dismantled cylinder without tipping over the latter.
The invention 'l'uithermore has for its object, to improve. devices of the indicated character in various particulars to the end that eflicicncy in operation may he promoted, as well as simplicity in construction and 30 convenience of adiustment and control.
The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanv inc drawings forming a. part of this spccification, in which similar characters of reference indicate correspond ng parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a, side elevation of a valve lifter embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a *0 section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail cross section of the frame on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section on the line P4 of Fig. 1: and Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section on the line 55 45 of Fig. 1.
In constructing a. practical embodiment of the invention in accordance with the illustrated example. the frame is provided, preferably consisting of a single I-loar. and
50 the same is formed at the upper end with a. handle 11. Adiacent to the handle 11 at the upper end of the frame 10. and adjacent to the lower end of said frame, transverse sleeves 12, 13, are formed respectively to 65 slidahly receive lateral arms 14. 15, equipped Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
Serial No. 345,393.
with 'valveriamping means, as hereinafter descrihed. To adjustahly hind the al'msl li, 1.3. in thrir respective sleeves, the latter are provided with set screws 18, 19, the ends of which are received in depressions 16, 17, in 60 "aid lateral arms.
.Yhc lower arm 15 is equipped With adjustable jaws to engage different sized valve washers. The jaws 20 are each, pivoted by rivets ll or equivalent means to the 6,5 depressed outer end 22 of the arm 15, said depressed end being connected with the arm by a downwardly-extending member 23. The jaws 20 are provided with pins 241, which are received in arcuatc slots 25 in a 7.0 disk '26 secured by a pivot pin or rivet 27 t0 the depressed end 22. A spring washer 29 eneath the head of the rivet 27 gives the necessary friction between the parts. The washer 2' may be turned by means of ears 75 28 or equivalent meml'iers thereon. The jaws 20 are provided with opposite angular recesses Q0. and with pins 30 adjacent to the recesses. The recesses acc mmodate the rims of washers or collars on the valve stems, and with the pins 14. provision is made to center collars. even large ones, and prevent the slipping of the device on the valve.
I have indicated a valve A in dotted lines 815 in Fig. 1 and a portion of a motor B. the letter a indicating the valve stem, a the spring. and a it washer or collar.
To engage the opposite end of the valve in gripping the same. a head 31 is provided 90 on a vertically sliding presser bar or grip per har and isadapted to be operated by a lever 33 connected by a link 34 with the arm 14. said link being pivoted as at 35 to the lever 33. and at its opposite end asat 9,5 36 to a bracket 37 on said arm 14. The bar 32 has guided movement in a vertical sleeve 38 formed on the arm 14. Interengzaging elements are provided on the bar 32, and lever 33. which preferably consist of teeth 39 on said har. and a transverse pin 40 in. a vertical opening 33* of the lever. At the side of the opening 33 opposite the pin 40, is a presser pin 41 under the influence of a compression spring 42. disposed in a housing 43 formed on the said lever. as best shown in Fig. The arrangement is such that the pin 40 is normally held maintained in posi tion to engage a tooth 39 of the bar 32, but the pin 41 will yield to an upward move W) nu-nt of the lever to permit the pin to =lip ovcr thc tcclh 32 {)n a face of the clamp bar 3:, a vert cal crics oi ratchet tccth it i provided. a l'aptc l to he engaged by a pawl 4;) operating in a transverse opening .55 in the slcvvc I58, said pawl bcing carllQll on a rock shaft l6 provided with a crank hanvllrl7. and the shaft being under thc inlluoncc ot' a torsion spring; 455 which. normally ttlltlr to maintain the pawl in err gagmuont with tho rack ll, so as to holtl the bar in tho drum-i ed position to which it has hccn movrtl. by the lever 33.
By the lateral adjustment of the arms 14 the cleric/i! may be manic to conform to engincs anal motors of dillcvont sizes, and the different sizcd valves arc accommodated by the described con'fitruction flflii arrangement of the gripping jaws .20 and their appurtc nances.
Referring again to the handle 11, it is disposc-tl hcncath the lcvcr 33, and by reason of this fact. one person using the device may so grip the handle 11 and lover, as to give complete control, and perform the necessary manirtmlations on a valve of a dismantled nvlins without liability of tipping over thc latter.
Having thus described my in'icntion, I claim as new, and rlcsirc to secure by Let tors Patcnt:
