It has been found very desirable in practice to provide telephone drops with coils which can be removed from the drop shells without .removing the shells from the switchboard, and my present invention accomplishes this result in a novel and eilicient manner. It has been customary in the past to secure the armature and drop catch rigidly together and to pivot this structure as a whole upon the rear end of the drop shell. By my present invention I pivotally secure the drop catch to the rear end of the shell and so arrange the armature that it may be readily removed and replaced without in any way disturbing the adjustment of the drop catch.

In this embodiment of my invention the supporting plate 1, which may be an individual mounting plate or may be a gang plate extending either vertically or horizontally to receive a plurality of similar devices, is shownas an individual mounting plate. Immediately in front of the late 1 is the insulating strip 2 which is pre erably of hard rubber and polished to form the face of the switchboard. A second, sheet of insulation 3 separates the hinge plate 4 and .the strip '2, its purpose being to hold the hinge'pin 5 away from the plate 2, so that v the pin may be readily inserted and removed. The drop shutter 6 is loosely pivoted upon the pin 5 and is adapted to rotate 55 about the pin until the outer face of the shutter engages the upper edge of the guard 7. The number of the shutter appears upon said guard plate 7, the upper edge of said plate being disposed relative to the pivot of the shutter, so thatthe shutter Will not obscure a view of the number when down, and resting on the guard plate. Thus, the number of the shutter is visible to the operator at all times, whether the shutter is down or in its normal sition.
The screws 8 extend through the plates 4, 3, 2 and 1, and thread into the front end of raised pothe drop shell 9, this shell being insulated from the plate 1 by a thin sheet of rubber insulation 10. The rear end of the drop shell is the shell itself sawed in such a way thatl portions of it are bent upwardly to `form the pivot supports 12 to which the 75.
drop catch 13 is secured by means of the screws 14. This drop catch, shown particularly in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, is provided with a hook 15 at its forward end adapted to engage the shutter 6, and with the tongue 16 80 at the rear end adapted t0 extend through an opening in the armature 17, pressing the armature upwardly so that the groove 18 therein is engaged by the V-shaped projection 19, thus holding the armature in a fired position relative to the drop catch. The rear end of the drop catch is also provided with the ears 20 having holes therein, through which the screws 14 pass, forming `the pivot about which the armature and drop catch operate. The armature 12 is provided with the knurled extension 22, which is adapted to be gripped by the ngers or byv a pair of pliers to remove the armature from its engagement with the drop catch.
Within the shell, as shown particularly in Fig. 4, is a magnet spool having a hollow core 25 upon the ends of which are ber heads 26, the rear head being provided with 10G terminal clips 27 for establishing the circuit connections with the coil 28. The sott iron screw 29 extends through the center of the hollow core 25 and threads into the forward end of the shell to hold the magnet spool in position within the shell.
It is often desirable to associate a drop, as here described, with the jack ofthe same line to which the drop is connected, and to so arrange the mechanical construction that when a plug is inserted in the jack, the drop if previously thrown, will be restored to its normal position. In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, I, therefore, show a jack frame 30 secured tothe front plate 1 -by means of the threaded thimble lor sleeve 3l. This jack frame is preferably made of pressed metal .and comprises the front supporting portion 32, the rearwardly extending angular portionsv33 which port the switch spring shelf 34. Thev top of this jack frame is completely open so that the jack' springs may extend through.y The angular portions 33 carry downwardly eX- tending lugs 35 through which the pin.36 extends carrying the insulating sleeve 37. This sleeve provides a normal rest for the jack springs 38 and 39, the spring 38 pressing downwardly upon the upper part of the sleeve, and the spring 39 pressing upwardly upon the lower part of the sleeve. The jack is also provided with the spring 40 which normally connects through contacts .4l with the spring 39. This jack is further provided with the restoring spring 42 which is adapted to be pressed by means of the button 52 against the cam 43 upon the shutter 6 to restore the shutter to its normal position when a plug is inserted in the springs are all secured together and to the shelf 34 of the jack frame 30 by means of the screws 44, strips of insulation being inserted between the springs to electrically links being provided by the lower part of theshutter causing the separatey them.
In order to facilitate the ready connection and disconnection of thel contacts of the drop coil, I provide the terminal links 45 and 46, shown particularly in Fig. 10, these .at their upper ends,l and with the closed slots 48 at their lower ends, whereby when the screws- 49 and 50 .are loosened and the links allowed to drop the armature maybe readily removed. The link 46 is also providedy witha terminal lug 51 to which one of the wires of the switchboard cable may be connected. This drop is also provided with night alarm contacts 53 and 54, the contact 53being carried to thev rear of the drop and there`being provided with the hook 55 for establishing the electric connection therewith, the electric connection with the contact 54 being preferably carried through the plate 1.
