To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsliehl, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, ot' which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention .relates to means adapted to be attached to an engine for a motor vev hicle such as an automobile, and has for its object the production of a simple and eilicient locking means for a valve whereby the passage of gas may be conveniently'cut off from" the carburetor to the engine.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient valve4 and lock therefor whereby the passage from the carbureter to the cylinder of the explosive engine will be closed to prevent unauthorized parties from running the engine.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. 1 'K In the drawin :-Fi 're 1 is a sectional view through t e hoo of an automobile showing the engine in side elevation and the resent inventionapplied thereto. By referring to the drawings by numerals it will be seen that 1 designates the body ofthe automobile in which vis placed the usual explosive engine or engines 2 being connected to a gas supply pipe 3 by means of the usual Y-connection 4. A carbureter 5 is also carried adjacent the engine l and is operated in the usual manner; and between the carburetor 5 and, the Y-supply pipe is placed the valve casing 6. and this tubular body 7 is provided upon one s1de with a trunnion 8 in which is journaled one end of the valve supporting shaft 9.

The collar 18 is provided with a centrally arranged aperture 19 and around the plunger 17 is placed a coil" spring 20 for normally holding the plungerv 17 in en agen ment with the notched portion 16 o the shaft 9 and thereby hold the .valve 14 in an open position. A threaded plug 21 seals the upper end of the collar 18. The plug 21 being obviously removable, access may be readily had to the spring 20 and plunger 17, when desired so re airs or replacements are facilitated. The p ug 21. also forms an upper bearing surface for the spring 20, so
.that said spring is constantly exertin a tension tending to retain the plunger 1 in engagement with the notch 16 of the shaft 9, so that said shaft 9 is normally held in position to retain valve 14 open, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings.
The auxiliary casing 10 is provided With an integral laterally extending arm 22 which arm terminates in a broad laterally exteud- 95 ing supporting plaie 23 being provided with an aperture 24. A lockingV late 25 is secured to the outer end of t e shaft -9rby means of a pin or sift screw 26, and the foi'- ward end of the locking plate Q5 is rovided with a depending tongue 27 whic is provided with an aperturcl through which aperture is adapted to pass the hook 2'9 of the padlock 30.
, From the foregoing description it will be 106 seen that as the lock 30 engages the tongue 27 thc locking plato will he firmly held in engagement with the plate 22 thereby holding the valve i4. in a closed position and pre' venting the passage of gas through the cas- 110 ing 7.' It is to be understood of course, that the locking plate, or handle 25 is fast on the outer end of the shaft 9, so that when the said handle is turned to place the saine upon the supporting plate the shaft 9 is ro tated against the pressure ofA the spring pressed plunger 17 causing the said plungei1 to ride out of the notch 16.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the valve is so locked unauthorized parties will not be able to use the machine or engine thereby insuring safety to the engine while the owner or operator is compelled to leave the machine standing upon the street.
Astillustrated in Fig. 5, there is shown an embodiment oi the invention wherein the supporting arm or plate ll is provided with a pocket portion 3l which pocket portion has its upper edge Hush with the top of the plate 25 whereby the edges of' the plate 25 will be shielded and thc lateral strain upon the plate 25 will be relieved from the de pending tongue 27 which is adapted to be engaged by the lock 29.
Having thus described. the invention, what is claimed as new, is
l. A device of the character described comprising a tube, a casing carried thereby, a valve in the vtube provided with a'shaft that extends through the casing, means in the casing i'or engaging the shaft to normally hold the valve open, a supporting arm projecting laterally from the casing and aving a handle seat provided with an opening in its free end, a handle for rotating the shaft to close the valve, said handle adapted to lie on the seat of the support and having a tongue adapted to project through the opening, and a lock for engaging the tongue.

A device of the character described comprising a tube, a casing carried thereby, u valve in the tube and having a shaft journnled in and extending through the casing, a laterally. projecting collar carried by the casing, said shaft having a notch formed therein, a plunger in the collar, a cap for and means for locking the handle to the support to retain the valve dosed.

A device oi' the clI described comprising a tube, a dish. valve mounted Within said tube and adapted to open and close 'a passage therethrough, a shaft for supporting said valve, a easing secured to said tube, saifi casing provided with alaterally projecting enlarged locking plate engaging member provided with an upwardly extend ing flange extending therearound for constituting a pocket, a locking plate ixedly secured to said shaft and adapted to fit Within said pocket formed for resisting the lateral movement of said locking plate and adapted to hold said valve supporting shaft against 'longitudinal movement, and means carried by said locking plate for holding the same against accidental removal from said pocket.
