METAL RAILWAY-TIE Specification of Letters Pateiit. w

' Application filed November 14, 1911. Serial No. 660,302.
Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This'invention relates to metal railway,
tiesand more particularly to metal. railway ties made from railroad rails which are no ,fimger suitable for track purposes.
The principal objectof this invention is to provide anew and useful metal railway tie made from railroad rails no longer useful for track purposes.
, The invention consists of'metal railway ties formed from lengths or railroad tracks, together with means applied thereto of fastening the rails of the roadbed of a railroad :0 said improved metal ties.
In the drawing forming part of the specification, Figure 1 is a plan View of my'improved metal railway tie. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end viewof Fig; 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section of F on section line A-A. Fig. 5 is an' enlarged erspecti 1e view of a wooden block insertiblexgie b t ends of the improved tie. Fig. 6 isii enlarged end view of a rail saddle which is placed over the ends of the improved tie. Fig. 7 is a side view ofF1g 6. Like figures of reference refer to like parts throughout. v
The metal tie T shown in the accompanying drawing is made from a railroad rail 1. The end portions 5 of the rail .1 are bent back along opposite sides of the middle portion 5 of said rail to extend parallel to said middle portion. The flanges of the end portions 5 and of the middle portion-5 of the rail 1 are in contact or close together. Upon the tie T near each end thereof is a rail saddle'2, which has a body portion 3 and two downwardly extending flanges 4. The saddles 2 are slipped over the ends of the tie T; and whenin position, the body portions 3 rest upon the heads of the portions of the rail 1 constituting the end portion 5 and the adjacent part of the middle portion 5. The flanges 4 of the saddles 2 fit over and under the head of the rail 1 and hold the saddle in from the body portion 3-of each saddle 2 the rail 1 ,near each end of the tie T. Each block 8 has-a shoulder 9 which engages the under sides of the head of the rail 1 and holds the block in place. The saddle 2 has spaced holes 7 therein, through which ordinary spikes 12 are driven into the block 8 so as to hold the track rails 11 in position.
The saddles 2 are slidable upon the tie T and can be adjusted to give the proper gage d) the track rails 11. While the end portions 5' of the tie are shown on opposite sides of the middle portion 5, said end portions 5 may be upon the same side of the middle portion without departing from the invention. I
The construction' shown and described may be considerably modified without departing from the invention, and I do not wish to be limited to the details of this construction.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. A metal railway tie comprising a piece of a railroad rail having both end portions thereof bent to extend parallel to the middle portion of said rail on opposite sides thereof, a wooden block between each of said end portions and said middle portion of said rail, said blocks being adapted to receive and retain means for holding the track rails to said tie. and adjustable rail saddles hav-;
mg downwardly extending flanges fitting closely around the head of the rail in each of said end portions thereof and in said middle portion, said saddles each having upwardly extending lugs near the corners thereof which are spaced to receive a track rail, said saddles having holes therein through which are driven the spikes for fastening the track d rail, said 'blocks'behsving downwardly extending flanges fitting closely around the head of said firstmentioned rail.
A metal rmhvny tie comprising a; place 5 of a railroad rail having both end portions thereof bent to extend parallel to the middle 10 ing rail fastening devices, and rail saddles 1 slidably mounted on said tie for supporting track rails.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two sub scribing Witnesses.
