Bren, of the city and county of Providence and State of illhode lsland, have invented certain new and. useful lmprovements in Screw-Ma.- chincs; and I do hereby declare the following s 'ieciiication, taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact de scription thereof.
The present invention relates to screw machines, and more es 'iecially to that class of screw machines in which a rod of stock is intermittently ted forward for the prescriliied distance to form an article and is held by the jaws of a revolving chuck and sure sively acted upon by a series of tools carried by an indexing turret-head. In certain machines of this class the series of tools are secured in a turrethead mounted on a turret-slide, and the reciprocating feed and return morei'nents are imparted to said turret-slide,;ivhich thus constitutes a feedslidc. in suchlmachines both the turret-slide and the turret-head mounted thereon, together with all of the tools secured in said turret- 'cd for separate head, are reciproca ted back and'i'orth in connection with the operation of each successive tool upon the work. In certain other machines the several tools are carried by a, series of tool-carriers which are mount- 7 and individual reciprocation in a turret-head which is mounted in stationary bearings. each t( ol-carrier being in turn connected with a reciprocating feedslidc. in such machines only the feed-slide with onc ot the tool-carriers connected therewith requires to be reciprocated for the feed and return movements. each tool-carrier beinn separately reciprocated, and only one of said carriers bei'i' reciprocated in connecon with each suct ive operation. The machine shown in the accompanying I drawings isespeciallydesigned as a high speed mac inc, and to that end the machine is of that type in which a series of individually reciprocating tool-spindles are ememployed in ployed, as machines of that type can be run at a much higher speed than machines in whlch a heavy turret-slide and the attached parts are required to be reciprocated in connection. with the operation of each successive tool. a
Certain further features of the invention therefore are more particularly applicable to, and adapted to be employed in connection with, machines embodying a series of individually reciprocating tool-carriers, and in whichthe turret has-simply a rotary movement imparted thereto for the purpos of indexing the same.
In both types of machines above referred to 1t is customary to employ separaterand independent mechanisms for imparting feed and return movements to the reciprocating feedslide, one of these mechanisms serving to impart to said slide a slow feeding movement, and the other mechanism serving to impart to said slide a quick return movement. In certain cases, as for example in the Davenport and Gabriel patents hereinbeforc referred to, the quick return mechanism is so constructed that it will also serve to move the tool or tools approximately up to the work at the same high rate of speed, leaving the slow running'mechanism to 0perate on] v to etl'ect the feed during the actual operation of the tools.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a machine which may be run at a high speed, and in which the quick return movement of the toolcarrier Will be eiiected at a materially higher speed than has been heretofore, possible or practicable in machines of this class.
To that end the invention consists pri inarily in the employment, in combination with the main slide,-the turret slide in the one case or the feed-slide for individual tool-spindles in the other, ofan auxiliary or supplemental slide, and means whereby the quick return movements willbe im arted only to such auxiliary or supplementa slide, thereby avoiding the-necessity of imparting high speed movements to the heavy, or com-- paratively heavy, main slide, which is olejectionalole.
The invention further consists in the combination," with a series of individually movable toolcarriers. oi a main slide, an auxiliary slide adapted to be connected with sively, means for imparting quick return movements to said auxiliary slide, and a fixed stop for arresting the return or rearward movement of said auxiliary slide.
When the operating tool consists of a threading die it is usually necessary that there shall be a rearward movement of the feed-slide during the unthreading of the die. Such rearward movement cannot be eli'ectcd by the quick return mechanism, but must be effected or controlled by the feed-cam. In such case therefore the quick return mechanism must not begin to operate until after the die has cleared the worl At this time, however, a certain amount of return movement will already have been imparted to the feed-slide under the action or control of the feed-cam. Consequently when a fixed stop is employed for arresting the rearward movement of the feed-slide, the distance through which the feed-slide is to be moved by the quick return mechanism is correspondingly lessened.
A further feature of invention therefore consists in means for automatically breaking the connection between the quick return mechanism and the feed-slide, whereby the rearward movement of said feed-slide may be arrested before the return mechanism has completed its/ operative movement, and whereby said return mechanism may continue its operative movement after the rear ward movement of the feed-slide has been arrested.
The invention further consists in means whereby the feed-slide may be disconnected from the quick return mechanism in connection with setting up the machine, for example, and may be automatically connected with said quick return mechanism when the machine is again started.
, The invention further consists in the combination with a main slide and an auxiliary slide, of a feed cam therefor, a spring for imparting return movements to said auxiliary slide, and means for controlling the operation of said spring.
The invention further consists in the combination with a main slide and an auxiliary slide, of a feed-cam therefor, a spring for imparting return movements to said auxiliary slide, and means mounted on said main slide for controlling the operation of said spring.
The invention further consists in the combination with a main slide and an auxiliary slide, of a feed-cam therefor, a spring for imparting return movements to said auxiliary slide, means for controlling the operation of said spring, and means for positively returning said-auxiliary slide in case said spring fails to return'the same.
The invention further consists in the combination, with a main slide and an auxiliary .--:lidc-, of a feed-cam therefor, a tool-turret,
means for indexing said tool-turret, and means for returning said auxiliary slide to its rearward position before the indexing movement of said tool turret commences.
In the accompanying drawings, in which the features of invention are shown as embodied in a screw machine of that type in which the several tool-spindles are mounted for separate and individual reciprocation, Figure 1 is a front elevation of such machine. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the right hand end of the machine partly in section and with certain of the parts omitted or broken away. Fig. l is a plan view of the turret mechanism. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the return mechanism for the tool-spindles showing the parts in the position which they occupy when the auxiliary slide has been moved backward. by hand. Fig. 6 is a section on the line .rm of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a partial horizontal sectional view with the front and back shafts removed. Fig. 8 is a front elevation on an enlarged scale ofthe feed and return mechanisms for the tool-spindles, showing one of the tool-spindles in its forward'position. Fig. 9 is a corresponding front elevation of the feed and return mechanisms showing one of the tool-spindles in its rearward position, and with the parts in the position they occupy at the beginning of the indexing of the turret. Fig. 10 is a corresponding front elevation of the feed and return mechanisms, showing the parts in the position which they occupy at the end of the indexing operation and showing the next tool-spindle in series in its rearward position and ready to be fed forward. Figs. 11, 12 and 13 are detail views.
The machine shown in the drawings is a single spindle machine, that is, has a single work-spindle. The work-spindle end of the machine is or may be substantially like the machine shown in the patent to Davenport, No. (301,306, above referred to, and this part of the machine need be only generally described.
The work-spindle 1 is adapted to be rotated in opposite directions by. the two oppositely running pulleys 2 and 3 loosely mounted on said spindle and adapted to be alternately connected to the spindle in the usual manner by means of a clutch (not shown). 4 is the clutch-lever for opening and closing the jaws of the chuck carried by thework-spindle, said lever being operated by a earn 5 on the cam-shaft 6.' 7 is the feed-lever for operating the feed tube for feeding forward the rod of stock, said lever being operated by a cam 8' on said cam-shaft. Preferably means are provided for adjusting the leggth of the feed, such means being shown in ig. 2, and being the same as that shown and described in the Davenport patent referred to.

9 is the main driving shaft of the machine from which the cam-shaft and all the other parts of the machine, except the workspindle and the toorspindles, are operated.
The driving; pulley 10, instead of being-g mounted directly on the shaft 9, is preferably mounted on a. short shaft ll which is adapted to be connected to and disconnected from the driving shaft 9 by means of a 10 clutch 12. By the shifting of said clutch the operation of all those parts of the machine which are operated from the shaft 9 may be started or stopped.
Mounted on the shaft 9 is a sleeve 13 pro- 15 vided with a cam 1-L adapted to actuate the clutch-lerer 13, the movement of which in one direction on the other serves to connect one or the other of the pulleys '2 and 3 with construction shown in the drawings the cam ii is a single the work-spindle. In the acting cam and actua'tes the lever 15 to shift the clutch in one direction, said lever being operated to shift the clutch in the opposite direction by means of a spring-plunger 16 controlled as to its action by a transversely arranged lever ltl The camsleeve 13 is adapted to be connected to and disconnected from the shaft 9 by means of a clutch 17. the position of which is controlled by a transversely arranged lever 18.

Referring now to the tool-spi ulle end. of the machine, to which the present features of invention chietly relate, a series of separate and individually sliding t-ootspindles 25 are mounted in a turrot-l'iead which comprises two disks 26 and 27 mounted to revolve in housings and 29 and secured to a short shaft 30. Referring now to the means for indexing the turret-head. there is loosely mounted on the shaft 9 on the opposite side of the collar 2i another two-part sleeve, the two parts of whichare rotatably but slidably connected together. Referring: next to the means for impart in; term l and return movements to the individual tool-s indlcs, the same embodies it slow running; feed-cam for advancing or feeding the tool-spindle during the operation of cutting, and ai'iother and quick act Plaid sliding member ii i is acted dle, said quick acting mechanism also prefierably serving to advance the tool-spindle to bring the tool up to the work. With such construction the tool-spindle is returned, the turret indexed, and the succeeding tool-spindle advanced to bring the next tool up to the work while the roll is passing over the high point of the feed-cam and passing low enough to bring it into proper position to feed forward said last mentioned tool-spindle duringthe cutting operation.
Referring first to the means for rotating the slow running feed-cam and for feeding forward such individual tool-spindles in cutting, the shaft 9 is provided at'its left hand end, Fig. 2, withthegear 53 which meshes with an intermediate gear 54 loosely mounted on a stud, which intermediate gear meshes with a gear 55 secured to a shaf? 56. The gears 53, 54, and 55 are pre erably change gears. The shaft 56 is provided with a worm 57 which engages-with a Worm-wheel 58 secured to one end of a transverse shaft 59. Secured to the shaft 59 is agear 60 (see Fig. 7) which meshes .Witha gear 61seeured to a parallel transverse shaft 62, on which last mentioned shaft issecured the slow running feed-cam 63. Said cam 63 is removable and, as will be understood,cams of varying shapes and with a varying number of lobes are to be employed, according to the character of the article to be produced and the number of tool-spindles to be used in the production of such article. In the drawings six tool-spindles are shown, and assuming that all of these spindles are to be employed in the production of a given article, the cam 63 will beprovided with a corresponding number of lobes, two only of which are for convenience shown in the drawings designated as 63 and 63', respectively. Mounted in suitable bearings in the frame is a rockshaft 64 provided with arms 65 and 66. The
' arm 65 is preferably provided with an antifriction roll 67 arranged to ride upon the periphery of the feed-cam 63. The arm or lever 66 is provided at its upper end with a gear-segment 68 which meshes with a, rack 6.9 secured to the main feed-slide .31.
Referring next to the quick acting mechanism for returning and subsequently advancing each individual tool-spindle, the shaft 45 is provided with an elongated gear 70 which meshes with a' gear 71 mounted to revolve on a stud72 secured on the main feed slide. Secured to the gear 71 is a bevel gear 73 which meshes with a bevel gear 74 secured. to a shaft 75. Secured to the shaft 75 is a crank-disk 76 carrying a cra1'-'.-pin

The auxiliary feed-slide 32 is provided with a downwardly extending bracket 82 in which is slidably mounted a spring-pressed pin 83, said pin being acted upon by-a spring 8% surrounding the same. Said spring 8 1 bears at one end against a shoulder 85 formed on the pin and at the other end against a plug 86 screwed into or otherwise secured to the bracket 82. The pin or projection 81 on the block is provided with a hole adapted to receive the inner end of the pin When the end of the pin 83 is, by the action of the spring 84 projected into the hole in the pin 81 the auxiliary feed-slide 32 and the block 80 are thereby connected together and said auxiliary feedslide is thus connected through the two-part connecting rod with the crank-disk 76 and with the main feedslide. When the pin 83 is withdrawn from engagement with the pin or projection 81 on the block 80 the auxiliary feed-slide 32 may be moved backward and returned to its normalposition by hand and independent of the block 80, which remains connected through the two-part connecting rod with the crank-disk. The pin 81 is cut away to form an annular shoulder 81 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The two parts 78 and 79 of the twoart connecting rod are normally connecte "or latched togetherby a latch in the form of a hook-lever 87 pivoted on the part 79, the hook of which lever is adapted to enter a notch 88 formed in the part 78 and to engage the wall of said notch, as shown in Fig. 8. A spring '89 is arranged to bear against the tail of said hook-lever 87, said spring acting to normally hold said lever or latch in en-- gaging position and thus to connect the two parts '78 and 79 of the connecting rod. The
purpose in making the connecting: rod 78, 79 in two parts .normally connected together is in order that by disconnecting. the two arts of said connecting rod the auxiliary cod-slide may be disconnected from the mainfeed-slide, and so that as the result of such disconnection the return movement of the auxiliary feed-slide may be arrested before the quick return mechanism carried by the main feed-slide has completed its oper ative movement. Secured to the frame is a cam 90 located in the path of a rojection 91 on the hook-lever 87 when sai hooklever is in the position which it occupies lie when the two parts of the connecting rod VVith the parts in this position, when the auxiliary feed-slide is moved back by the quick return mechanism, as hereinafter described, the projection 9.1 on the hook-lever 87 is thereby brought into engagement with the cam 90, which said cam, as the auxiliary feed-slide continues to move backward, acts to turn the hook-leve aboutits pivot, thereby with drawing the hook-end of said lever from the notch 88, thus disconnecting the two parts of the connecting rod and consequently disconnecting the auxiliary feedslide from the main fecdslide. Preferably the two parts of the connecting .rod are unlatched anddisconnected shortly before the auxiliary feed slide has reached its rearmost position, and so that the final rearward movement of said auxiliary fccd-slide is effected by the action of the spring 92 entirely" independent of the rotation of the crank-disk 76, said spring 92 serving, as will be more fully pointed out later, to move said" auxiliary. slide into engagement with a fixed abutment 32 and to hold said auxiliary slide against such fixed abutment during the operation of indexing. Preferably the arm or segment-lever (36 is provided with a projection (5(3 adapted to engage the fixed frame, as shown in Fig. 8 for a purpose to be hereafter referred to.
The spring 92 acts in effect upon the auxiliary feed-slide in the following manner: Said spring 92"is located partly in a-holc formed in the frame of the machine and partly in a hole formed in the block 80, one end of said spring abutting against the bottol'n of the hole in the fran'ic, and the other end abutting against the bottom-of the hole in said block. As said block is, as above described, normally connected with the auxiliary feed-slide, said spring 92 thus acts in ell ect upon said auxiliary feedslide. Preferably a second spring is employed which is adapted to act upon. the main feed-slide. A s 'iring pressed pin or plunger 93 acted upon by a spring 9i is mounted in the frame and arranged to bear against the arm or seginei'it-lever (50 and thus through said segn'nent-lever is adapted to act upon the main 'leedslide. As heretofore explained, the operation of the springplunger 16 and of the three several clutch members 17, 20, and -11 is controlled each by a transversely arranged lever, .ViZ., the lovers 16, 18, 24, and -11. The actuation of each of these four levers is controlled by tappets adjuslably lilOlITdtCttOll disks secured to the front shaft of the machine, all as more fully explained in the Davenport patent above referred to. i

in Fig. 2 the clutch is in engagement with the reverse pulley 3, and that at the proper 5 time the clutch member 17 will be tripped and released by the action of one of the tappets 107 on the lever 18, thereby causing the cam 14 to be rotated and act upon the clutch-lever 15 to shift the clutch into engagement with the forwardly rotating pulley 2. It will also be understood that at the desired time the spring-plunger 16 will be tripped by the action of one of the tappets 108 on the lever 16, whereupon said springplunger. will act upon the clutch-lever 15 to shift the clutch into engagement with the reverse pulley 3. It will also be understood that when the rod of stock is to be fed forward the clutch member 20 will be tripped and released by the actionrof one of the the cam-shaft 6 to be rotated and by the rotation of the cams 5 and 8 causing the jaws of the chuckto be opened, the rod feeding devices to be operated and the chuck-jaws to be again closed upon the rod.
Understanding that a rod of stock is held in and rotated by the work-spindle, and that such rod'of stock is intermittently fed forward the desired distance for each article to be formed therefrom, the operation of that part of the machine which has to do with feeding forward and retracting the tools and with indexing the turret-head, whereby said tools are caused to act succes- As will be understood, with the construction shown and described, the several tools are advanced and retracted separately and individually, only the one tool which at the time is to act upon the rod of stock being thus advanced and retracted, while all of the other tools remain in their retracted position; Assuming now that the turret-head has been indexed and that one of the toolspindles 25 has been advanced by the quick acting mechanism up to the work, said toolspindle is then fed forward by the action of one of the lobes of the slow running feedcam, for example, the lobe 63, to cause the tool carried thereby to operate upon the work. This serves to bring the parts into the position shown in Fig. 8, wherein the tool- I spindle 25 therein shown is in its extreme forward position. At this time and with the 4 parts in this osition the clutch member 89 a-is tripped an released by the action of one of the tappets 104 on the lever 41, thereby causingthe. gears 43 and 44 and the shaft 45 to be rotated. The rotation of the shaft 45 serves through the connecting gearing to rotate the crank-disk 76, by means of which quick return and advancing movements are imparted to the auxiliary feed-slide.
In the present machine in which the sevand the tool-spindle at the time connected therewith are retracted by the quick return mechanism to their rearmost position, the turret-head is then indexed to bring the next tool-spindle into operative position and to connect the same with the auxiliary feedslide, and then said slide is advanced by the quick-acting mechanism to bring the tool in said spindle up to the work ready for said tool to be fed forward by the action of the feed-cam. While, therefore, the operation of indexing does not take place until after -the auxiliary feed-slide has been retracted,
it will be convenient to firstdescribe the operation of the indexing mechanism, and then to describe the operation of the quick-acting mechanism in retracting and advancing the auxiliary feed-slide. When the shaft 45 begins to rotate, the crank-pin 47 is in the position shown in Fig. 3. As the crank disk 46 is rotated, the crank-pin 47 is caused to enter one of the slots 48 in the disk 49, and so that the continued rotation of said crank-disk will cause the disk 49 to be rotated and thus, through the gears 51 and 52, causefthe turret-head to be indexed. The indexing movement of the turret-head will cause the block 33 on'the tool-spindle 25 to be carried out of engagement with the rib 35 on the auxiliary feed-slide and cause the corresponding block on the next tool-spindle to he brought into engagement with said rib, thereby connecting said last mentioned tool-spindle with the auxiliary feed-slide ready to be advanced thereby. It will be understood that during this indexing operation the auxiliary feed-slide will be held. in its rearward position against the abutment 32 by the action of the spring 92 on said slide. The rotation of the shaft 45, as above statedalso serves to rotate the, crankdisk 7 6. In other words, the provision of thus disconnecting the auxiliarv slide makes possible and brings about a dwell of the auxiliary slide in its rearward position during the time the turret-head is being indexed.

While the machine shown and described is of that type in which the several toolsare mounted in individually movable spindles, each of Which is separately advanced and. retracted, the underlying feature of invention, which consists in the comiolnation, with a. main slide, of an auxiliary slide, and means for giving quick return movements only to said auxiliary slide, may be employed in other types oi machines.
It will be understood that While the machine is especially adapted for making metal screws and is commonly reterred' to as a screw machine, said machine is also adapted tor making a great variety of other articles, and where the term screw machine is employed in the specification. and claims such term is employed to designate the general character of the machine and without reference to the particular articles made thereby.
