To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swissvale, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Pressing Glass Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for pressing glass articles, of the type wherein the several operations are performed by automatically operative mechanism, utilizing fluid pressure, the pressed articles being formed successively within a series of intermittently rotatable molds.
The machine as a whole comprises such a table and molds, actuating mechanism for the table, means for locking and unlocking the table, plunger mechanism and operating means therefor, and shears for cutting the glass off of the supplying means for the mold.
The present invention particularly refers to the shear mechanism, the application being a division of my prior ap lication filed Apr. 9, 1913, Serial No. 76005;

Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view, partly in section, and partly in plan, showing the sev-' eral operating parts of the complete machine in segregated arrangement, with their connected piping, etc. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional detail view of the automatic valve mechanism for locking the table and for controlling the fluid pressure to the shears cylinder. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the entire machine, the several operative mechanisms. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional detail view of the shear -mechanism, indicated by the section line IV. IV. of Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is an under plan view of the shear mechanism.
vThe machine as a whole consists of several main features comprising the frame of the apparatus, embodying a main stationary table carried by any suitable framework. Upon the stationary table is rotatably mounted the mold supporting table 4 of circular form, revolubly carried preferably on ball bearings around a central supporting spindle or standard, of well-known construction, whereby to centralize the mold supporting table for its intermittent revolution and operation.

Mounted upon the table 4 are a plurality of glass pressing molds 7, five being shown in the machine illustrated, so located and spaced as to be brought consecutively in register with a pair of shear blades 8, 8, and a pressing plunger located vertically above, and 1n registering position with each mold, as it is. brought successively thereunder.
The machine is so designed and the several working parts so proportioned and arranged as to effect the cutting of the molten glass by the shears when it is held between them above the mold by the workman; to eflect shifting rotation of the table carrying mold and molten glass around one space to register with the plunger; to time the operation of the table shifting mechanism under the control of the initial controlling release valve to provide sufiicient time for the cutting and dropping of the glass into the mold before the table is actuated; to shift the table and to cushion or retard its actuating mechanism at the end of its movement, avoiding jars or shocks; to then automatically actuate release valve mechanism by an abutment on the table itself to set the plunger mechanism into motion by its controlling valve, embodying timing and pressure controlling valve mechanism; to withdraw the plunger; and to effect performance of these several functions through interacting and interdependent fl id pr s r 00111180 tions and mechanism, adapted to carry out the functions without any attention from the operator, after actuating the initial release valve, as is more fully illustrated and described in the parent application above referred to;
The shears 8 are operated by the piston of fluid controlled cylinder A. The table 4 is shifted by the piston of the fluid controlled cylinder B, mounted beneath thetable with its connected parts, the fluid supply thereto having circulation through a retarding valve C vunder control. of the automatic valve D, which is in direct communication with the initial release or bleeder valve E, the automatic valve D being directly connected to the main air supply pipe S.
The pressing plunger is mounted at the lower end of the usual spindle 10, with suitable accompanying spring mechanism for cushionin the stroke, spindle 10 extending into the plunger cylinder F mounted on the supporting bracket 14, carried lay columns or otherwise, upwardly above the main frame or table 2 of the machine. A timer G for the plunger cylinder F is mounted on the same bracket, as shown, and is directly connected with the valve casing f or plunger cylinder F, whereby to control the shifting operation thereof. a A supply and exhaust fluid pressure cylinder F to efi'ect lowering of'the plunger at a predetermined speed at a limited pressure is controlled by the valve within casing f and its parts, whereby to control the shifting operation thereof.
The shear actuatingmechanism A consists of a cylinder mounted upon one ofseveral standards 13 extending upwardly above the stationary table 2, having a piston. head 15 "on the inner end of stem 16 extending out through the end of cylinder A having a terminal cross head 17 provided with pins 18, 18, in notched engagement with the rear outer portions of blades 8, said blades being otherwise to a leaf spring a extending out pivoted on a rivet ,or stud 19 carried in a suitable support 20 extending out underneath cross head 17.
Support 20 is loosely clamped underneath extension support a of cylinder A and is held thereto by bolts a which pass through extension at and are tapped in a cross bar a which 111 turn is connected by soldering or underneath the pivoting portions of the shear blades 8 to hold them together in shearing contact. By this means bar a and support 2ll'are held tightly in position. The shears and support 20 may thus be bodily removed by loosening bolts a, the construction eifecting'close adjustment of the shears with relation to each other and the top of the mold, and quick changing of the blades. Fluid pressure is supplied to the cylinder A by branch pipe 21 which is in direct communication by its upper terminal with the interior of automatic valve D.
Valve D has a four-fold function; first, to unlock and lock the rotatable'table 4; by its reciprocable stem 22 having the tapered terminal adapted to engage with the registering socket 23 in the under portion of table 4:, under control of the initial release valve E; second, to admit direct air pressure to cylinder A to close the shears upon actuation of release valve E, and to open the shears; third; to supply retarded air pressure to the table shifting cylinder; and fourth, to supply air pressure to the other end of shifting cylinder B to reverse the shifting mechanism for the next movement. To this end the automatic valve D is provided in its lower portion with a cylindrical valve chamber (1, within which is mounted the vertically reciprocating controlling valved connected with the lower end of plunger rod 22, as shown in Fig. 2, the valve (1 having a reduced middle area or cross sec-- 1,1eo,e 19

Said cavity is in communication with the release or bleeder valve E by a pipe 24:, connected at its other end with the lower portion or said valve (see Fig. 1) and the releasing valve is adapted to efiect release of air pressure from said cavity (2 of valve 03 upon the lowering of lever e pivoted' on the bracket 6 of valve 6. bears downwardly upon a stem 6 of an outlet valve 6 being normally held to its seat by a cushioning spring within valve casing a.
It will be understood that in the opera tion of the machine, the workman having lowered the molten glass on the end of his punty rod into the upper portion of the mold and in register with shear blades 8, he lowers the punty rod upon lever e at the Lever e I proper movement, thereby releasing pressure through pipe 24: from cavity d, wheresupport extending underneath the hearing extension of the cylinder, shear blades pivoted thereto, a crosshead on the piston stem operatively engaging the blades, a clamp securing the pivot support to the bearing extension, and a spring attached to and extending from the clamp underneath the blades for holding them together and against said support in such manner that the pivot may be adjusted to or from the cylinder.
2. In an apparatus for pressing glass articles, the combination of a rotatable mold table, a shifting cylinder therefor, shears and an actuating cylinder therefor, and a controlling valve for the shears cylinder and shifting cylinder having a part forming a locking and unlocking device for the table, a fluid supply, and means for effecting release from one end of said valve to open communication to the shifting cylinder and shears cylinder and to unlock the table.
3. In an apparatus for pressing glass articles, the combination of a rotatable mold table, ashifting cylinder therefor, shears and an actuating cylinder therefor, a controlling valve for the shears cylinder and shifting cylinder having a connected co acting locking and unlocking device for the table, an air pressure supply therefor, and a releasing valve operable to reduce pressure at one end of said controlling valve to effect shifting thereof.
In an apparatus for pressing glass articles, the combination of a rotatable mold table, a shifting cylinder therefor, shears and an actuating cylinder therefor, a controlling valve for the shears, cylinder and shifting cylinder having a connected coacting locking and unlockingdevice for the table, an air pressure supply therefor, and a releasing valve operable by the workman in delivering glass to the moldbetween the shears and connected with one end of the controlling valve.
5. In an apparatus for pressing glass articles, the combination of a rotatable mold table, a shifting cylinder therefor, shears and an actuating cylinder therefor, a con trolling valve for the shears cylinder and shifting cylinder having a connected coacting locking and unlocking device for the table, an air pressure supply therefor, and a release Valve having a lever adapted to be depressed by the punty rod of the workman in lowering the glass into the mold between the shears and connected with one end of the controlling valve.
