To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK M. Os'rERBERo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, county of WVinnebago, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Safety-Razors, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has for its object to produce a safety razor which shall be simple in construction, which may be assembled or taken apart easily and conveniently and in which all of the parts will be securely held together when assembled ready for shaving.

The various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in the claim; but for a full understanding of my invention and of its object and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Referring to the drawing, 1 is a safety razor blade of any usual or suitable construction. This blade is adapted to be held in a combined guard or holder comprising a back plate 2 arranged to lie beneath the underside of the blade and a flange or lip bent around from one edge of the back plate so as to inclose the back edge 'of the blade and overlie the upper side thereof. The member 2 is provided with a series of guard fingers 4 which are so curved that they first flare outwardly away from the blade and then approach the plane of the cutting edge at their ends. This arrangement of the fin-. gers causes the skin to be drawn taut in advance of the cutting edge as the shaving progresses, preventing the skin from wrinkling and being cut, and insuring a clean shave.

In accordance with my invention I lock the blade in the holder and secure the holder to a suitable handle by a single clamping device which is so arranged that there are no nuts ,or other fastening devices which must be removed and which may be mislaid or lost To this end I cut through the back edge of the blade and the back edge of the holder registering slots 5 and 6, the slots in the blade and in the holder being preferably of the same width. The handle 7 is provided on its upper end with a screw-threaded portion 8 carrying a suitable head or shoulder 9 on its outer end and having a section directly beneath the head or shoulder flattened as at 10, this flattened portion being just thick enough to fit into the registering slots in the blade and holder. A nut 11 is placed on the screw-threaded portion of the handle before the head is formed or placed in position, and thereafter is prevented by the head from being unscrewed and lost. To assemble the parts the nut is screwed back far enough to leave sutlicient space between it and the head for the passage of the holder and the flattened portion of the handle is then slipped into the registering slots and the nut screwed up against the underside of the holder. By this means the blade is firmly clamped in the holder and the holder and blade are rigidly secured to the handle, without danger that the handle will turn. If the blade is made quite thin, the slot in the rear edge might weaken it, but the presence of the flattened portion of the handle in the slot, in such case, will stifien the blade and make it as strong as it was before being slotted. It, will thus be seen that I have produced a safety razor comprising only a few simple parts, one in which the clamping together of all of the parts is effected by a single nut which is held permanently on the handle, and one in which the blade may be moved in and out away from and toward the ends of the guard fingers and locked in its adjusted position without the addition of other clamping or holding devices than the single nut.

If desired, thumb screws 12 may be arranged in the back edge of the blade for facilitating the adjustment of the blade in' and out.

While I have illustrated and described only a single preferred form of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to the particular structural details thus illustratedand described; but intend to cover all forms and arrangements which fall Within the terms employed in the definitions of my invention constituting the appended claim.
