To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, lVILLIAM H. COTTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Salem, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountains, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to an improved fountain which is intended to be used for fowls such as chickens, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a fountain which is easy to clean and which is so constructed that the water can be easily dumped out when it is desired to provide a fresh supply of water.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the fountain that the cover which closes the cleaning opening will be protected and prevented from being injured in case the fountain is struck by any object.

With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fountain in a position ready for use. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the fountain. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the forward portion of the fountain. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of that portion of the front wall with which the closure cap is connected.

This fountain is provided with an outer receptacle 10 and an inner receptacle 11 which is tapered as shown in Fig. 3, and has its lower edge terminating adjacent the front wall 12 which closesthe lower half of the forward end of the outer receptacle. The inner receptacle is provided with a front wall 13 extending'from the upper edge to a point approximately on a level with the upper edge of the front wall 12, thus providing a space between the two walls 12 and 13 through which the chickens may obtain access to the water in the inner receptacle. A wire netting 14 is placed across this opening and is provided so that small chickens will be prevented from falling into the water and becoming drowned when they jump up upon the upper edge of the front wall 12 in order to obtain a drink of water.

The front wall 13 of the inner receptacle is sloped inwardly, as shown in Fig. 3, to such an extent that the cap 15 which is secured upon the threaded neck 16 will be positioned within the space between the wall 13 and the edge of the outer receptacle. This protects the cap and prevents any danger of its being hit and either broken or mashed out of shape by any object striking the fountain. .This cap is provided so that when it is desired to clean the fountain, the cap may be removed and the water in the fountain permitted to freely flow out of the inner receptacle through the neck 16 and through the opening which is covered by the wire 14. If it were not for this opening, the water could not very readily flow out through the opening covered by the wire 14: and, therefore, it would take some time to empty the fountain. It should also be noted that when the cap is removed, the person cleaning the fountain can put his hand into the inner receptacle through the neck and thus more readily clean the interior of the fountain.

A handle 17 is carried by the ears 18 and is intended to be engaged by the clips 19 so that the handle will provide means for keeping the fountain in the position shown in Fig. 1.
