MOLDING EVICE.
. To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, Josnrn O. RoUsHAn a citizen of the United States, residin'g atn Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding De-' vices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for molding semi-plastic substances such as butter or the like and has for its primary object to provide a device for molding and compressing a given quantity of such substances into a solid block.
Another object of the invention is to provide a form for the mold constructed in such a manner as to measure a certain amount of the substance to be molded.
A still further object of the invention is to Jrovide a mold of sim le chea and durable construction, and particularly one which is adapted for use in connection with a table or bench.
With these and other objects in view the invention may be more readily understood upon reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device as applied to a table or the like showing some of the parts in section; Fig. 2 is an end elevation on the line- 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary view of the form.
Referring to' the drawings in detail, 1 represents a frame which comprises an upright member and three transversely disposed arms, of which the lowermost arm serves as a supporting and guiding member for a thumb-screw 2 which is threaded therein and carries a spider 8 which serves as one jaw of a table clamp. The intermediate arm 4 serves the combined purpose of providing the other jaw of the table clamp, and carrying the base platen 5 of the mold, which is preferably of wood and which is recessed at 6 to receive the intermediate arm 4 and permit the base-platen to have a firm bearing upon the top of the table. The transverse arm 4 is adapted to lie flat on the top of the table in opposing and clamping pressure of the thumb screw 2, acting through the spider 3, and in holding the mold platen in place, and sustaining the re Specification of Letters Patent. V patgnted M3 32, 1915, Applicationmed July 31, 1914. Serial N 0. 854,351 if to slide within the removable form 8 for pressingthe substance to be molded firmly down upon the base-platen. This follower '7 is adapted to be forced downward by the i manually rotated pressure screw 9. The uppermost arm 10 provides the guide and support for the. pressure screw, which is threaded therein. In transmitting and properly distributing its pressure, the pressure screw 9, is connected with the top of the follower'Z, by means of a sleeve or socket bearing 11 which carries a spider 12' at its lower end. To prevent withdrawal of the screw 9 from the bearing 11 without interfering with relative swing between them, a set screw 13, carried by the bearing sleeve, enters an annular recess 14 in the rod 9.
Base platen 5 is constructed to not only supthe form 8 from the base 5 when the mate:
rial has been molded, and pressure screw 9 has been raised.
In the practical embodiment of the invention it has been found that the plunger 7, the base 6 and the form 8 are best constructed of hard wood, the form 8 having its corners dove-tailed, nailed and glued together.
The operation is as follows: To attach the device to a table or the like the transverse arm 41 is laid on the top of the table and the thumb screw 2 tightened. The form 8 being placed on the base 5, the material is placed therein and the pressure screw 9, carrying the plunger 7 is set into position and screwed up to compress the material. To remove the material from the form, the screw 9 is unscrewed sufiiciently to relieve the pressure; the form 8 is then raised by means of the finger lifts 15; after which the follower is further elevated and the mold block removed. A molding apparatus on, a follower cooperating with the plate clamping serew and'the intermediate arm servingithe combined purpose of opposing the clamping screw and positioning 5 the plate jdfthe meld, said follower having a bearing socket for "receiving and guiding the pressure 'SrW.
