Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1915.
Application filed November 15 1313. Serial No. 801,303,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PROUTY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Dorchester, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for saleschecks, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to holders for sales checks. and has for its object the provision of a device of thisclassin which the saleschecks may be retained conveniently and in which when the checks have been used the stubs thereof may be removed quickly there from 'to permit the insertionof a new set of sales-checks.
The invention consistsin a boxlike frame open at one side and one end and having revolubly mounted therein a threaded spindle, one end of which is provided with means outside the box for rotating said spindle, while the opposite end is normally locked by a pivoted cover to' prevent the removal of the checks from said spindle, said checks being forced against said cover by means of a nut threaded to said spindle.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 represents a plan of a device embodying the principles of the present invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same, the cutting plane being on line 22 on Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 represents a transverse vertical section of the same, the cutting plane being on line 3-3 on Fig. 2.
Similar characters designate like parts throughout the several figures of the draw- 111S. a y
in the drawings, 10 is a b'oxlike frame having an open side 11 and an open end 12 as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This boxlike frame 10 may be made up in any preferred manner. It is provided on one side with a. clip 13 pivoted at 14 and having secured to its inner face a toothed member 15 which is adapted to grip upon the belt of the person using the sales-checks force being applied forthis purpose to the clip by the spring 16 coiled about the pivot 14. The bottom 17 of the box 10 is provided with a cylindrical opening in which is positioned the reduced end 18 of a threadthreaded to tlie spindle 19' is a nut 22- hav ing flanges forming a part thereof to which is riveted the bottom plate 23 extending out p wardly from the open end 11 of the box frame 10 and adapted to support the set of sales checks 24: contained within the holder. The stub ends 25 of the sales'checks 24 are provided with alined openings 26 through which the spindle '19 extends, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The open end 12 of the box frame 10 is provided with a cover 27 pivoted at 28 and is provided with a lockingbolt 29 adapted to be operated by a key inserted in the keyhole 30 to move the bolt outwardly through an opening 31 in the outer wall 32 of the box frame 10. l' hen the bolt 29 is thus inserted in the opening 31 in the outer wall 32 the cover is locked from movement about its pivot 28. Thecover 27'- is provided with an extension 33 fitting over the upper edge :of theouter wall and bearing against its' outer face when in normal locked position. This extension 33 forms a stiffeningmember which prevents the wall 32 from being forced out 'wardly and disengaged from the bolt 29.
To the under face of the cover 27 is secured a spring plate 34 provided with an opening 35 therethrough through which extends the upper end of the threaded spindle 19.
It is obvious from an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawings that when the cover is in its normal locked position as indicated in said. figure, it will be impossible to remove [the stubs 25 from the said spindle until the cover has again been unlocked and moved about its pivot 28. "when thishas been accomplished the stubs of the sales checks may be removed and a new set of sales-chccks.in-, serted in the box upon the spindle l9; A spring plate '34 tends to force the stubs downwardly and by turning themilled head or collar 20 the nut 22 with its'movable bottom'plate 23 may be moved upwardly to firmly clamp the sales checks between the cover and said bottom plate. As the lock- 7 bottom plate adapted to support the checksi claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a boxlike frame having an open side and end; a threaded sales-check retaining spindle supported in the closed end of said box and extending lengthwise thereof through openings in said checks; a cover hinged to the open end of said frame adapted to be looked over the end of said spindle; and a nut movable lengthwise of said spindle beneath the sales checks and adapted to clamp said checks against the inner face of said hinged cover. I
2. A device of the class described comprising a boxlike frame having an open side and end; a threaded sales-check retaining spindle supported in the closed end of said box and extending lengthwise thereof through openings in said checks; a cover hinged to the open end of said frame and adapted to be locked thereto, said cover being provided with an opening therein adapted when locked to receive the end of said spindle; and a nut movable lengthwise of said spindle beneath the sales checks and adapted to clamp said checks against the inner face of said cover and provided with a andextending to the outer ends thereof.
4. A device of the class described comprising a boxlike frame having an open side and end; a threaded sales-check retaining spindle extending lengthwise of said box; a cover hinged to the open end of said box and opening therein through which the end of said spindle is adapted to extend; a nut on provided with a spring extension having an said, spindle adapted to bear against said sales checks; and means beneath the box for V rotating said spindle.
5. A device of the class described, comprising a boxlike frame having an open side and end; a threaded sales-check retaining spindle extending lengthwise of said box; a cover for the open end of said box adapted to be looked over the end of said spindle and to be removed therefrom; and a nut movable lengthwise of said spindle adapted to clamp said checks.
Signed by me at 4 Post Ofiice Sq., Boston, Mass, this 10th day of November, 1913.
