Description

(taint i fitter am can.
Letters Patent No. 113,058, dated March28, 187 1.
- lMPROVEM ENT' IN FORME-RS FOR BASKETS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and maldngpart of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE 0. Jones, of Dowagiac, in the county of Cass and State'ofMichigan,,have invented a new and improved Former, for use in the Manufacture of Stave-Baskets with inside hoops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a section taken diametrically through the improved former.
FigureZ is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of stave -baskets having inside hoops placed midway between their top and .bottom hoops. Such a basket is described in the Letters Patent granted to me on the 11th day of December, A. D. 1866.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing the former, upon which the baskets are made, that it will support and hold in proper place the hoop which is required upon the inside of each basket between its top and bottom, thus allowing such hoop to be properlynailed to the staves before a basket is removed from the former, as will be hereinafter explained.
The following description will enable others skilled in the art to carry into effectrny invention.
In the accompanying drawing A represents the former-block, which corresponds in size and shape to the interior of the baskets which it is intended to make upon-it.
The drawing, fig. 1, represents the former A mounted upon a pedestal, B, which has a large base, DJ
The hoop c, which loosely surrounds the former A, is connected, by radial arms cl d, to a rod, 0, arranged in the oeuter'of the pedestal B.
The lower end of rod 0 is pivoted to a treadle, g, which has its fulcrum at h.
By means of the treadle g the hoop a can be moved up and down.
Surrounding the upper concave end of the block A is a groove, a, which is adapted for receiving and holding in place the inside bottom hoop while forming a basket upon this block.
Below this groove, and midway between it and the lower end of the block A, a shoulder, b, is formed entirely around it, which shoulder is intended to receive and hold in place the inside midwayhoop while arranging and nailing together the parts which form a basket.
The shoulder 11 may be made on the periphery of the former-block, as shown in the drawing, orashoulder or hoop-support, which would be the equivalent of this, may be formed by a great number of pins applied to a lever or treadle in such manner that they .could be thrust out or retracted at pleasure, by moving said lever or treadle.
Having described my invention,
YVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, -is- The stave-basket former-block A, provided with a shoulder, 7), arranged as described, for the purpose set forth. I
HORACE C. J ONES.-
