DEVICE FOR SECURING DOUBLY-IBENT HOOKS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, RUDOLF Rnrrnn and RUnoLr LORENZ, both subjects of Germany, and residents of Leipzig, Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing Doubly- Bent Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a novel device for securing doubly bent hooks or clasps to labels, tickets and various other objects.
Labels and tickets of cardboard, pasteboard and the like to be attached to paper vation.
boxes and other objects are usually provided with doubly bent securing hooks the free shanks of which protrude beyond the label or ticket for the purpose of having means to secure the labels or tickets to any object desired. The application of the securing hook or clasp to the label or ticket is effected by bending over the head portion of such hook or clasp immediately after the shanks have been pressed through the same. If this operation is to be done effectively then the head of the securing clasp must be seized in an exact way otherwise the clasp may be deformed.
In order to attain this desirable result we have produced a novel device for bending the head of the securing hook in the desired manner. This device comprises means having three protruding extensions adapted to engage and bend over the head of the hook, said means being guided between a spring actuated bolt and a rigid arm which is ad: justably mounted.

purpose of pressing the head D of the securing hook against the surface of the cardboard label, a member E is provided within the device. This member is mounted in the lower part F of the device. It extends upwardly in a slanting direction and is longitudinally movable. The member E may be shifted forward and backward by means of a two armed lever G. This lever actuates the member E by means of a link H which connects said lever and member. In addition to this forward and backward motion the member E is adapted to perform a slight motion in a vertical plane because its lower contact surface is rounded off, as shown in Fig. 1. The member E is guided between a spring actuated bolt I and a rigid but adjustably mounted guiding arm K. The bolt I rests upon the lower end portion of a pivoted arm L to the upper end of which a helical spring M is attached with one end, while the other end of said spring is secured to the table or machine frame. The guiding arm K is movable on the pivot K and has on the top portion a nose adapted to engage an adjoining reduced portion of the member E. The bottom end of the arm K has a rectangular downward extension on which a set screw N- acts for the purpose of adiusting said rigid arm K. For pressing the head D of the securing hook upon the surface of the cardboard label the top portion 0 of the member E is provided with three short extensions Q. The spaces formed between the three extensions Q are adapted to receive the shanks P of the hook whereby they are safely guided during the operation of pressing on the head 1) of the hook. The adioining end portions of the extensions Q are beveled off so as to widen the spaces between them. Should the shanks enter these spaces in a slanting direction then the same are guided by the enlarged space sections and the wire shanks of the hooks are thereby properly directed and kept in a straight position. During the period of bending the head of the hook the three short extensions on the top 0 of the member E enter in cor responding recesses R of a counter support S for the hook. It is important that the member E seizes the head of the hook at the proper place, therefore, the height of the top 0 of the member E must be made adjustable. This is effected by the guiding arm K and the spring actuated bolt I which permit of a slight displacement of the during its operation. 7

These covers when in their final position close said entry openings. The covers are located within the recesses and longitudinallymovable therein under the action of helical springs U. It is 'suflicient if the outer openings are provided with such closing devicesbut all three recesses may have them so that they all may be periodically closed, while the longshanks of the hook D pass through the cardboard. The shanks then abut against cross strips of the counter support so that they enter the spaces between the short extensions on the top 0 of the member E when said member performs itsforward movement, The extensions thenpr'es's the covers T back overcoming the actions of the spring U and allow said extensions to enter therefcesses R. In this manner the shanks of the hook are perfectly guided during the operation of pressing the head against the cardboard. v
We claim as our invention:
I 1. A device for securing doubly hooks to fiat objects comprising means for supporting the object and hook therein, a movable member having three short extensions on its front portion adapted tobress on the head of the hook and to housethe "shanks of the hook during the bending of thehead.
2. A device for securing doubl bent hooks to cardboard labels, tickets and the like comprising means for supporting the label and hook therein, a mova le me'mber having three short extensions with beveled 01f adjoining front portions to create widened spaces between them adapted to press the head of the hook onto the label and to guide and house the shanks of the hook during the bending of thehead.
