T0 all 'zc/50m it may concern Be it known that l, VILLIAM P. "WIL- LrAi-wrs, a. citizen of the United States,'resid ing at Owensboro, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Road-Grading l`\./Iachine and Ditcher; and I do hereby ,declare the follow-- ing to `be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which' it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new-and use- Jful improved road grading machine and ditcher, and an object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this natureinvolving improved features of construction in the provision of aconcave blade extending .liagonally roin'the machine, and provided with holders at its outer end to receive an extension blade.v rlhis blade and its extension constitutes means for scraping and leveling the road-bed, the concave blade he ing of suic'ient height to prevent the dirt and the like crowding over the top or" the. same.
A feature of the invention is the fact that after one side of the road-bed has heen graded or leveled, the entire machine may be completely turned over end for end, so as to grade or level the other side of the road-bed.
Another feature of the inventionis lthat by turning the machine over, the dirt and the like is always thrown in the same direction to one side of the road.
Another feature of the invention is the fact that the blade and its extension are` adjustable angnlarly with relation to the machine. v
ln practical fields theV details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling Within the scope of What is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings z--Figure 1 is a plan vievv' of the improved machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional view online 3--3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4; is a detail View of the blade anduits eivtension. Fig. v5 Ais a detail view showing a modilied form of the structure shown in Fig. 3.
Referring'more especially to the drawings,

.m il? is supported at rightanifg-inber l, by means of the brack- :ne provided with hooked ends clef/is ig the member Il,a in the manner the di y'ing particularly as shown .is platform 30 .constitutes on which the operatorl may stand, in 'ng the machine. The rear endbj the r 'l is provided with runners. Bd'an'd el., belted at llhen the'inachiiie is moi'- ing in one dir etion'the runner Bengages rl i. itl-bed, but when, traveling 1n the re-` irection, the runner engages the Y. 2d. A
rulej in grading a road, the greater .1 oli the dirt crowds against the scraper. ide adjacent the land side or'guide ineinthe dirt gradually tapering or grading down toward the outer end.V ob the blade. fll fw f .'1 i. lneieioie bj constructing une blade or heavy sheet metal, and linking the saineconcalled? adj acent Wherethe blade is connected td the land.. side or guide member. l, the greater portion of the dirt is preVentedffrom crowding over the tpofv the blade, 'and hence it has` been .found by. placing a reinforcing member angular in cross section, sneh as thatA nidicat'ed at l, this abrupt bending will be prexented. As he:einbeore described a Connection 2.7 is provided between the bar (i (to which any suitable equalizer may be connected) and the scraper blade, Awhich connection 27 acts to hold the loosev coluiections 16 and 17 taut. lt has been found inpractice that Whenthe scrap r bladecontaets with an obstruction, therebyY polling. bach upon the horse power. (which may be connected to the barb), the loose links 16 and 17A ii'illcollapse, allowing the blate to yield. llfhen the blade yields in this manner, the link lis allowed to swing upon a 'substantially full half arc, -which will permit the blade to yield sufficiently, nn-
Weense tilit either removes the obstruction or passes over the sam@ in either case the horse powerk f will ystraighten both link connections, there by relieving all jars and jerks on the body or land side meinber, and the operator on'the.
