Description
ENTEE TATER PART UEEEE.
FREDERICK ROSE, OTTO MARCUS, AND ALBERT KLEIVIZ, OF PORTLAND, OREGON; SAID KLEMZ ASSIGNOR TO PAUL HAUCKE.
KINDLINGr-BLOCK.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK Rosa, OTTO Marcus, and ALBERT KLnMz, citizens of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in KindlingBlocks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention pertains to kindling blocks, and has for its object to provide an article which may be readily ignited by the application of a lighted taper or the like and which possesses a fuel content in amount and character that will burn with astrong blaze long enough to ignite ordinary fuel, without the use of specially prepared kindling.
It is further the object to provide such an article which is compact and reduced to the smallest volume obtainable, and of a form and size convenient for use.
It is further an object to employ material which ordinarily constitutes waste and to convert it into commercial article of universal use.
These objects are accomplished by use of the materials and in the manner hereinafter described.
In carrying out our invention we employ wood which has been reduced to small partioles, and prefer to use coarse shavings, such as may be obtained in shops or factories. These, which usually constitute waste, are sufficiently reduced to permit their ready incorporation with the other materials to be employed; and they at the same time possess a value in fuel content which renders them particularly well adapted for the purpose.
In preparing the material, the moisture is first driven from the wood in the form of shavings, by any usual drying operation, and seven parts of turpentine to 30 parts of shavings are then mixed with them, so that every particle is covered by the turpentine. The shavings will then be allowed to stand long enough for the turpentine to penetrate into the wood and thus keep the wood in this inflammable substance. This will require about eight hours, after which they will be Specification of Letters Patent.

ready for the further steps in their preparation. Rosin in the proportion of 61 parts to 30 parts of the shavings will be heated until it is reduced to a thin liquid state, when two parts of sulfur will be added to it and thoroughly mingled therewith. This liquid will be poured over the shavings prepared as above described, and mixed by grinding, or otherwise, until the ingredients are evenly distributed, and until the entire content has reached the form of a plastic mass. This having been accomplished the material will be placed into molds of a form and size" for convenient use, where it will be subjected to a high degree of pressure to shape it into permanent blocks. Each of these blocks is designed to constitute sufficient kindling for any ordinary fuel, and it will produce an intense blaze for several minutes.
Blocks prepared in the manner above described, can be produced at an expense not greatly in excess of that of ordinary kindling, and it is always ready for use, without the need of the labor and disorder which always attend the preparation of such kindling. The use of these blocks, moreover, is attended with perfect safety, and it will thus be possible to dispense with the use of explosives for such purpose.
Having described our invention, what we claim, is
1. An article of manufacture comprising a kindling block made of wood reduced to small parts steeped in turpentine and mixed with liquid rosin and sulfur in substantially the proportions specified and pressed into blocks, substantially as described.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a combination of wood shavings, seven parts of turpentine, sixty-one parts of liquid rosin and two parts of sulfur in block form.
In testimony whereof, we afiix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
