Application filed May 25, 1914.-

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUoUsT J. ALTHEIDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewiston, in the county of Nez Perce and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in chairs and the primary object of the same is to provide a chair of the'character described having means for automatically forcing air against the body of a person sitting therein as the chair is rocked.

A secondary object is to so locate the air discharge tubes as to render the air di cha-rged therefrom readily controllable by various movements of the hands.

With the above objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein:

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved chair; Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 1 is a vertical cross section on the line 4-4l of Fig. 1.

In the embodiment illustrated, I have shown the base 1 of my improved chair as comprising parallel side bars 2, said side bars being connected by a plurality of transverse bars 3. Secured upon the cross bars 3 by means of L-shaped brackets 4, is a pair of base boards 5, which constitute the lower members of a pair of bellows 6, one of said bellows having its hinged end at the front of the chair, while the other bellows has said end at the rear thereof. The upper movable members 7 of the bellows 6 are provided with funnel shaped valve casings 8 in which the usual outwardly opening valves 9 are disposed. Suitable inwardly opening valves 10 are also employed in the base boards 5.

Mounted for oscillating movement upon the side bars 2 of the base 1 are the rockers 11, which are curved upwardly at their front and rear ends and are secured in any suitable manner to side bars 12 which are connected by front and rear cross bars 13 and let to constitute a frame for supporting.- the seat of the chair. tional cross bars 15 are also provided between said side bars 12 and depending from said bars 15 are front and rear pivot studs 16 which are threaded into the above mentioned bars and are pivotally connected by links 17 with similar pivot studs 18 on the movable members of the bellows 6.

A central cross bar 19 has its opposite ends secured to the side bars 12, said bar being provided for supporting a four way coupling 20 which communicates through flexible tubes 21 with each of the bellows 6, said tubes being connected to the cone shaped valve casings 8. The coupling 20 is also in communication with a pair of hollow arm supports 22 by means of flexible tubes 23.

As clearly shown in the drawings, a support 22 is arranged. on each side of the chair and said supports extend through the arms 24: and have their bores turned slightly toward the rear as at 25 for the purpose of defleeting air in this direction.

I preferably pivotally connect the links 17 with the studs 16 and 18 by cotter pins 2 26 which are readily removable when it is desired to throw either one or both of the bellows out of operation. I may connect the four-way coupling 20 in any desirable mannor to the cross bar 19, but I preferably employ a substantially U-shaped yoke 27 which is secured to said bar by screws 28.

In the operation of the device, aperson sits in the chair, and upon rocking back and forth, the bellows 6 will be alternately expanded and contracted, thus forcing air through the tubes 21, into the coupling 20 through the tubes 23 and into the bores of the arm supports 22, from which it will be discharged through the rearwardly curved portions 25 of said bores and will be forced against the body of the person sitting in the chair. By manipulating his hands in the proper manner, the person sitting within the chair may direct the currents of air in any desired direction and upon any part of the body. v

The chair may be rocked rearwardly, and if it is desired to retain it in this position, one hand of the person reclining therein may be placed over the proper discharge opening 25 to prevent the escape of air. This operation will, of course, prevent the expanded bellows from contracting, and therefore will prevent the chair from rocking forward.

I preferably construct my improved chair in the extremely popular type known as mission furniture, although it will be clear that the various details of construction would operate to equal advantage were they placed on any other design of chair.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is: p

1. The combination with a base and a rocking chair resting thereon, said chair comprising a'pair of rockers, a seat frame including a transverse bar, a pair of arms spaced above the seat frame, and a pair of hollow arm supports rising from the side bars of the seat frame and being open at their upper and lower ends; of a coupling secured to said transverse bar of the seat frame and having two outlets and two inlets opening sidewise, a pair of horizontal tubes leading from said outlets through portions of the side bars of the seat frame and discharging into the hollow arm supports, a pair of bellows mounted on the base, connections between said bellows and the chair to actuate the former as the latter is rocked,

depending feet at their opposite ends, and

a plurality of transverse strips extending fromone side bar to the other, and a rocking chair whose rockers rest upon said side bars, said chair including a seat frame having a pair of transverse bars located near its front and rear sides, and a third transverse bar located near its center; of a pair of oppositely facing bellows having rigid bases resting upon and secured to the transverse strips of the base, links rising from the free ends of the two bellows and pivoted respectively to the front and rear transverse bars of the seat frame, a four-way coupling'secured to the central transverse bar of said seat frame, a pair of tubes leading from the two bellows to said coupling, and a second pair of such tubes leading outwardly from said coupling and then upwardly to points 7 above said seat frame.
