CHARLES BUSS, OF GLENWINTER, PENNSYLVANIA. j.
COMBINED TIE AND RAIL-FASTENER'.
Specification of Lettersl Patent.
Patented Feb. 23,1915.
Application filed August 21, 1914. Serial No. 857,936.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES Buss, a'citizen of the United States of America,'resid ing at Glenwinter, in the county vof Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have 1nvented certain new anduseful Improvements in Combined Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which `the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
r1`his invention relates to a combined tie and rail fastener and has for its object to provide a device of such class,in a manner as hereinafter set forth, ifor efficiently supporting a track rail, as well as clamping or fastening track rails in position, at the same time providing for thenecessary contraction and expansion of a track rail, due to climatic influences.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a combined tie and rail fastener which s simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eflicient and convenient in its use, readily set up and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views z-Figure 1 is a perspective view, broken away, of a combined tie and rail fastener in accordance with this invention, showing the adaptation thereof in connection with a track rail. Fig. 2, is an elevation, partly in longitudinal section, of a modified form upon a reduced scale and showing the adaptation thereof in connection with a track rail, the latter being illustrated in section. Fig. 3 is another modified form.
Referring to F ig. 1, 1 denotes the tie which is of inverted channel shape, is constructed of metal and comprises aweb and a pair of depending flanges 2 and 3 which space the top of a track bed. The top of the tie at each end and centrally thereof is formed with a longitudinally extending slot 4, only one end ofA the top is shown and but onel slot.;` The other end of the top is constructed in a manner simillar to that end illustrated. l
The reference characters 5and 6-r denote the base flanges, 7 the web and 8 the head of a track rail.'
The base flanges `5 and 6 f of the opposing track rails are mounted through the medium of -a fastener, compris-l ing a pair vof clampingsection's and a locking means therefor. One of the clamping sections consists of a bar 9,' provided intermediate its ends with a shoulder 10, which opposes the edge of the base flange 5. One end of the bar 9, has formed integral therewith and projecting upwardlyftherefrom, an angle-shaped element 12, which constitutes an inner fastener member. The other end of the bar 9 has formed integral therewith and projecting upward therefrom an arm 13, which is bent upon itself as at 14, to provide a pocket 15, through which extends the other clamping member, to be presently referred to. The inner side of the arm 13 is beveled as at 16. The other clamping member consists of a flat body portion 17, which extends through the pocket 15 and is provided with a tapering extension'18 constituting an outer fastener member. The body portion 17 has its outer end formed with a right angle bend 19 and said body portion 17 intermediate its ends, is formed with a rectangular slot 20, through which is adapted to be driven a wedge 21 constituting a locking device for clamping the two clamping members in position and to further maintain the inner and outer fastener members in engagement with the base flanges of the track rail. The outer fastener member 18 extends to the flange 5, and the inner fastener member 12 extends upon the flange 6.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings, the top of the tie is indicated by the reference character 22, and at each end is formed with a pair of slots, 28, 24. Otherwise than that is stated the construction shown in Fig. 1 and reference characters similar to that employed in Fig. 1 are employed in Fig. 2. Further relative to Fig. 2, it will be stated that inner fastener 12 extends up through the slot 23, that the bar 9 extends up through the slot 24:.
Referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings the top of the tie is indicated at 25, depending flanges thereof as at 26 and 27. The top 25 is slitted as at 28, 29 and 30 and the material freed by the slitting and Which is triangular in contour is bent vvupward. to provide an arm 31, which is bent uponitselfv as at 32 to provide a pocket 83. The top 25 is further slitted and thematerial freed from thel slots is bent upward to form an inner fastener member 34. Extending, through thereket 331s@ 'clamping nfembeifhavfn'g fn lextension 'S6 which constitutes ,outer kfastener, jme'nfb ber. v Clamping member 3:5 S pr'vided with 'a slot''for the passage offawe'dge 38 for locking sai'djmembers in position.
"A [combined ieA and vr'zjtil 'fastener comprising the combination with an invertedfchannelshaped tie bodyhof a clamping member having ya portion 'thereof "arranged 'below' the top 'f the vtie' body 'and y'ilt'ur'tler including an inner fastener member extending up through the topk of the tie body and adapted tooverlap the base Vflanges of the track rail, said clamping member further including a vertically disposed arm bent upon itself to provide `a pocket, a clamping member eX- tending through 'said pocket and having its inner end provided With means to constitute an outer fastenermember and further provided with a longitudinal ."slot, 'and a Wedge 'xtelf'le lthr'lrgh said slot ,and ,engaging afr'mffor forcing the t'v'vo clamping members together.
'n testimony ywhereof Iy ailxfmy 2signataire inthe presence of'tvvo Witnesses.
