To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Henry M. HUXLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Renewable Cartridge-F uses, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to renewable.- cartridge fuses, and is particularly, although not exclusively, adapted for use in connection with inclosed fusesof the ferrule type. In the co-pending application of Alfred L. Eustice, Serial No. 825,957, filed March 20, 1914, a renewable cartridge fuse is described in which each end of the fusible link is clamped between a clamping arm attached to the cap member and a clamping arm formed integral with an end washer of the fuse, these two clamping arms being drawn toward each other, in order to tightly clamp the end of this link in position, by means of a suitable screw -which passes through aper- "tures in the end cap and shell of the fuse,
thereby serving at the same time to hold the end cap in position.
The disadvantage of the constructionwhich I have just described resides in the fact that the ends of the fusible link which are bent over the end Washers are not brought into tight contact with the insides of the cap members, these cap members being provided with apertures through which portions of the link may be inspected. in case of a violent blowing of the fuse under short circuit, inflammable gases are liable to escape through these inspection apertures.
it is the object of my invention to rovide means by which the ends of the fusible link are tightly clamped between the clamping arms of the caps and end washers, while at the same time the bent-over ends of the fuse link are tightly clamped against the end caps. These and other advantages of my invention will be more readily understood 'by reference to the accompanying drawings,

My inclosed cartridge fuse isprovided with the tubular shell 10, of fiber or other suitable insulating material. At each end of the shell 10 is provided an end cap 11, which fits snugly over the end of the shell. Each of the end caps 11 has securely fastened thereto a clamping arm 12, which has a threaded aperture 13. An end washer la is located at each end of the shell 10 and is provided with a clamping arm 15, which is parallel with the clamping arm 12. The clamping arm 15 is preferably provided with a slot 16 in its end.
The fusible link 17 is preferably flat and extends through the tubular shell 10. At each end, the link 17 passes between the clamping arms l2 and 15, the apertures 18, near each end vof this link, registering with the threaded apertures 13 in the clamping arms L2. The screw 19 passes through an aperture in each of the end caps Ill. and through a corresponding aperture in the shell 10. Each of these screws is provided with a threaded end 20, adapted toengage the threaded aperture 13 of the clamping. arm 12. The screw 19 also has a beveled shoulder 21, which is adapted to engage the end of the recess 16 in the clamping arm 15. Each end of the fusible link 17, after passing between the clamping arms 12 and 15, is bent over the body portion of the end Washer 14 and may be inspected through an aperture 21 in the end cap 11. As the screw 19 is screwed home, the clamping arm 16 of the washer 1% is forced toward the clamping arm 12 by means of the beveled shoulder 21, while at the same time this beveled shoulder also serves to move the entire washer toward the end cap, thereby simultaneously performing the two functions of clamping the link 17 between the clamping arms 12 and 15 and clamping the overturned end of this link between the washer it and the end cap. This clamping action is well illustrated by Figs. 2 and 4. In Fig. 4 the screw 19 is shown in position before it has been screwed home, so that in this position the over-turned end of the link 17 loosely occupies the 'space between the washer 1+1 and the inner surface of the cap member 11. After the screw l9has been screwed home, the washer 14 is bodily moved in an outward direction and securely clamps too the over-turned end. of the link 17 in the manner indicated in Fig. 2.
In order to disassemble the fuse of my invention, it is only necessary to withdraw the screws 19, after which the end caps, and, then the end washers may be readily removed. In assembling the fuse, the end washers are first placed in position, the fusible link 17 is then inserted within the shell 10, and the ends of this fuse link are bent over the end washers. The end caps are then applied and the screws 19finally' inserted and screwed home, when theclamping action above mentioned takes place.
In order to cause the gradual escape .to the atmosphere of the gases which are generated on blowing of the fuse, I preferably employ, near each end of the shell 10, a spiral venting passage 23, which causes the gases to become materially cooled before reaching the atmosphere.
Although my invention is particularly adapted for cartridge fuses of the ferrule e, it may also be used for knife-blade P ses, by extending the clamping arms 12 to' form the blades 22,. as indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. I
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many changes could be made in the detailed construction of the various, parts which I have described without departing from the spirit or scope-of my invention.
2 What I claim is:
1. In a cartridge fuse, the combination of a shell, a cap fitting overeach end of said shell, a clamping member between said cap and the end of said shell, said cap andlsaid" shell having registering apertures therethrough, a fusible link extending through said shell and having a bent-over end between said clamping member and said cap, and wedging'means extending through the apertures of said cap and shell andengaging said clamping member, whereby saidcap is secured to. said shell and said clamping member may be forcedtoward said ca whereby the bent-over end of said link will be tightly secured between said cap and said clamping member, substantially as described.
2. In a cartridge fuse,the combination of a shell, a cap fitting over each end of said shell, an end washer between said cap and the end of said shell, said end washer having an arm extending inwardly into said shell, said cap and said shell having regiscap and said end washer, substantially as described.
3. In a cartridge fuse, the combination of said shell, said clamping member having a clamping arm extending parallelwith the clamping arm of said cap, a fusible link extending through said shell and between the clamping arms of said clamping member and said cap having a bent-over and between said clamping member and said cap, and
common means for moving said clamping member toward said cap and its clamping arm toward the clamping arm of said cap, whereby said link will betightly secured between said clamping arms and betweensaid clamping member-and said cap, substantially as described.
5. In a cartridge fuse, the combination of a shell,a cap fitting over each end of said shell, said cap having a clamping arm extending inwardly into said shell, a clampiiig member. betweenisaid cap and theend of said shell, said clamping member having a clamping arm extending parallel with the clamping arm of said cap, a fusible link extending through said shell andbetween the clamping arms of said clamping member and said cap having a bent-over end between said clamping member and said cap, and common means for securing said cap to said shell and for simultaneously moving the said clamping member toward said cap and the clamping arm of said. clamping member toward the clamping arm of said cap, whereby said fuse is tightly secured between said clamping arm and the bent-over end of said link is tightly secured between said clamping member and said cap, substantially as described.
6. In a cartridge fuse, the combination of a shell, a cap fittin over each 'end of said shell,'said shell an said cap having registering apertures through their sides, a clamping arm secured to said cap and extending inwardly into said shell, said am having a threaded aperture therein, an and washer between the end of said shell and said cap, said washer having a clamping arm extending parallel with the clamping arm of said cap, a fuse extending through said shelland between said clamping arms and having a bent-over and between said end washer and' said cap, and a rotation of said screw, said end Washer is forced toward the clamping arm of said cap, thereby securely holding said link in position, substantially as described.
