Clinton, in the county of D ewitt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements "in Rail Joints and Chairs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and i tron, aline with the openings 0. My invention relates to improvements in railway chairs and joints and has for its object to provide a simple, efficient and-inexpensive device of this'character which will obviate the necessity of employing bolts,
nuts, and nut locks for uniting the meeting ends of the rails.
To the above end, I employ a rectangular base block, rail bracing plates carried there by, said plates acting also to prevent the removal of a number of fastening pins to be described.
A secondary object of the invention is to provide simple and eliicient means for securely locking said bracing plates in position.
With the above and other minorobjects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein:

The invention comprises a base block 1 which extends longitudinally of the rails R and is preferably rectangular at its base, its

For the purpose of inore'rigidly bracing .the rails It and for retaining the pins 6 in position, I provide a pair of longitudinal bracingplates 8 which, are substantially wedge-shaped in cross section and having their upper edges held in forcible contact with the under sides of the heads H of the rails R by means of longitudinal ribs 9, the latter being cast integrally with the side walls 3 and having their inner iadges undercut as shown at 10, said under-cut portions co acting with the-narrow lower edges of said bracing plates.
"On the inside of the track, the bracing plate 8 is preferably held in proper position by means of a pair ofspikes 11 which pass through notches ,12' in the lower edge of said clamping plate and are driven through shown in Fig. l, the ribs 9 terminate a slight distancefrom the ends of said block 1- for 1 allowing the proper application of the spikes 11 on the inside of the track and for allowing ample space for the provision of other fastening means which are employed on theoutside of the track. Said last mentioned means comprises inclined plates 13 which are suitably shaped, on their under sides for contact throughout their length with the inclined walls 3 and the outer faces of the bracing plates 8, the inner edges of said plates contacting with the ends of the ribs 9, while the outer edges thereof are provided with upright plates 14: which extend laterally therefrom and contact with the ends of ably secured in this position oy spikes 15 which pass through alined openings in said lates and the base block 1 and enter certain of the ties T.

The combination with the meeting ends -of a pair of rails having openings through their Webs, of acne-piece base block having an inverted T-shaped slot extendin tudinally throughout its upper portion and adapted for the reception of the base flanges and webs of the rails, the material to each side of said slot being provided with notches alined with the openings in said rails, pins passing through said alined 'notches and openings, undercut longitudinal ribs on said base block retaining plates between said undercut ribs and the under sides of the heads of the rails.
2. The combination with the meeting ends of a pair of rails having openings through their webs, of a one-piece base block having a longitudinal rectangular base and upwardly and inwardly inclining side walls,
said block having a longitudinal inverted T- shaped slot at the juncture of said side walls for the reception of the base flanges and webs of the rails, the upper edges of said ings in said rails and opening into said slot, transverse pins in said alined notches, longitudinal undercut ribs on said side Walls of the base blocks, andlongitudi nal rail bracing and pin retaining plates forcibly contacting with the the heads of the rails and with the undercut portions of said ribs.
