ALFRED F. BBEST, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED F. Bnns'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVilliamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in toys and the primary object of which is the provision of a miniature roundabout.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel and efficient means for operating a device of this character.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a device which will be simple, efficient in operation, and durable in construction.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken. in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings :Figure is a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing to advantage the construction of the shaft.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the different views the numeral 1 represents a casing or housing comprising a box-like structure having one of its sides open. Secured to approximately the center of the bottom of the casing in any suitable manner is a bearing plate 2 in which is mounted the lower end of a shaft 3. The shaft is bent intermediate its ends to provide a crank or handle portion 4- so that it may be easily rotated in said bearing 2 by the hand accessible through the open side of the casing.
For the purpose of supporting the shaft in an upright or vertical position I have provided in the center of the cover 5 of the easing a circular opening 6 through which extends the upper screw-threaded end of the shaft 3. Disposed about the shaft 3 and,
resting upon the cover 5 is a washer 7 which in turn is held in place by a nut 8.
Mounted upon the upper end of the shaft and bearing against the nut 8 is a circular disk 9. The nut 8 forms a support for the disk and prevents the edges of the same from contacting with the cover 5. F or the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
' Application filed October 1, 1913. Serial No. 782,820.
purpose of retaining the disk upon the shaft 1 have provided a nut 10 which is screwthreaded on the upper end of the shaft. Disposed at diametrically opposite points and secured adjacent the edge of said disk are a plurality of seats or benches 11. The purpose of these seats or benches 11 is to hold a doll (not shown) and prevent the same from falling off the disk while it is be ing revolved.
It will be understood that figures of horses or other anmials may be placed upon the disk instead of the benches so as to afford amusement for children. The disk 12 may be made of wood or metal and if made of the latter the seats may be soldered upon the disk. :1
In the operation of my device a doll is placed upon the benches and the hand of the operator is inserted through the open side of the casing or housing 1 and engaged upon the crank a of the shaft 3. By movement of the hand the shaft is made to rotate in its bearings and at the same time cause the disk to be revolved.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates that modifications may be made in detail without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A toy including an oblong casing, a shaft mounted therein extending above the top of the casing, a disk carried by the projecting end of the shaft, means disposed about the shaft between the upper surface of the casing and the disk for preventing vertical movement of the shaft duringthe rotation thereof and for constituting a bearing surface for the disk for holding the same in a position of alinement with the to of the casing, means on the shaft within the casing to facilitate the rotation thereof. and one side of said casing being removed to permit of the insertion of the hand of the operator for rotating the shaft and consequently the disk.
2. A. toy comprising an oblong casing, a socket rigidly mounted in the center of the bottom of the casing, the top of the casing being provided with an opening registering with the socket, a shaft vertically positioned and rotatably mounted in said socket and said opening, one'terminal of the shaft we tending above the upper surface of the easing and being screw threaded, said shaft being cranked intermediate its ends Within the casing to provide a handle portion, a
5 disk disposed about the projecting end of the shaft, a plurality of objects disposed on the upper end of the disk, a nut in threaded engagement With the rod'and disposed between the upper surface of the casing and 10 the disk for preventing vertical movement of the shaft during rotation thereof and constituting a bearing surface for holding the disk in a position of alinement With the top of the casing during the rotation thereof,
another nut in threaded engagement with 15 the free end of the shaft for clamping the disk to the first mentioned nut, and one side of said casing being removed to permit of the insertion of one hand of the operator for facilitating the rotation of the disk. 20 In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
