PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent. I v Patented Feb, 23, 1915.
a lication filed February at, 1914. Serial No. 821,236.
a To all whom/it may concern Belt known that I, (Jr-mums L. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake City, in the county of Florence and State of South Carolina, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in plows, and more particularly to that class of plows which are used for plowing hillsides.
An object of this invention is the provision of a plow, the moldboard of which is provided with a hinged extension or wing, the wing being readily adjustable so as to vary the curve up which the furrow slice is carried.
With these and other objects in View, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the plow. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan View partly in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the shoe of the plow, and 2 the point and 3 the share, and as these parts may be of the usual or any preferred construction, further description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
Connected to the inner edge of the shoe is a landside 4t and inclined rearwardly from the upper face of the shoe is the moldboard 5. A pair of rearwardly inclined handles 6 are secured at their lower ends to the upper face of the shoe rearwardly of the moldboard, and connected to the outer face of one of the handles 6 is a guide plate 7, the opposite longitudinal edges of which are bent to form outwardly extending flanges 8 which provide a channel for the slidable block 9.
Hingedly connected to the upper edge of the moldboard 5 is an extension or wing 10, and a turn buckle 11 is provided to loosely connect the free end of the wing to the slidable block 9. Oppositely threaded screws 12 and 13 having hooked ends 14 are connected by their hooked ends to the block 9 and the wing 10 respectively, the threaded portions of the screws being engaged with the nut of the turn buckle 11, whereby the connection may, be lengthened or shortened, as
desired. An operating rod 15 is connected at its lower end to the block 9, the upper end of the rod being loosely connected to the outer face of one of the handles 6 by a strap 16. A handle 17 is formed at the upper end of the rod whereby the same may be moved upwardly and downwardly to move the block within the guide plate 7, so as to adjust the wing 10 to various positions with relation to the moldboard. The rod 15 is formed adjacent the block with an outwardly extending U-shaped off-set portion 18, and one of the flanges 8 of the guide plate 7 is formed with a plurality of notches 19 to receive the arms of the off-set portion of the rod to maintain the block in adjusted position with relation to the handle.
As stated, this plow is designed more particularly for use by hillside farmers in plowing between rows of corn, and when plowing the higher side of a row, the wing will be depressed, so that the soil will not be thrown over the plants, but when the end of the furrow is reached and the lower side of the hill is to be plowed, then the wing will be raised to form a continuation of the moldboard, so that the amount of soil thrown toward but not onto the crop will be the same asthat on .the higher side of the row.
It will of course be understood that the moldboard and extension therefor do not necessarily have to be shaped as shown in the drawing, but they can be molded in any shape to produce the best results.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A plow comprising handles, a land side and a moldboard, a wing hinged to the upper edge of the moldboard and arranged to form a continuation thereof, a block guided for movement longitudinally of one of the handles, a connection between the block and the moldboard, means for imparting longitudinal movement to the block whereby to move the wing into or out of alinement with the moldboard, and means for maintaining the wing in its adjusted position.
2. A plow comprising a moldboard, a land side and handles, a wing hinged to the upper side of the moldboard and forming a continuation thereof, a channeled guide secured to one of the handles and i l l l l having one of its walls provided with engagement with pairs of the notches, 1o notches, a block slidably mounted in the whereby to lock the wing in operative or inguide, an adjustable connection between operative position.
the block and the Wing, and a rod mounted In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my for sliding movement on the guide carrying signature in the presence of two witnesses.
handle and having its lower end secured for CHARLES L. ALLEN. swinging movement to the block, the inter- Witnesses:
mediate portion of the rod being provided C. E. CARTER,
with an off-set to be brought into locking E. P. JOHNSON.
