Be it known that I, ARVID J. MALMBERG, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. A
My invention relates to improvements in tire-proof doors or shutters and certain features of these improvements have been made the subject matter of divisional applications, Serial Nos. 869,873 and 869,874, filed in the Patent Office on November 2, 1914.
The frame of my improved door or shut.- ter is preferably made of metal in two separate pieces, one for each side and which may be secured together bysuitable fire proof means.
The object of my invention is to provide. a fire-proof door for use in any appropriate place, the said door being made up of a number of different pieces which. are suitably formed and secured together and which when assembled present a neat and compact appearance.
With this and other objects in view, my invention consists in the improvements shown in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and .more panticularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing A and B represent opposite sides of the door and said sides are formed and connected together in a manner hereinafter described.
1 and 2 designate the outer plates of the side Stiles of the side A of the door and 3 and are the outer plates of the opposite side B. The side stiles 1 and 2 are provided on their inner edges with inwardly and rearwardly extending stepped moldings 5 and the inner edges of said moldings are turned back to form flanges 6. These moldings are formed as above described throughout` their entire length, with the exception of the portions which accommodate the upper panel of the door and these portions have rearwardly, inwardly and forwardly extendingianges 7. The stiles 1 and 2 are also provided on their outer edges with flanges 8 bent at right angles thereto, which extend throughout their entire length.
9, 10 and 11 are respectively the outer plates of the top, middle and bottom cross rails on the side A of the door and 12, 13 and 14 are similar plates on the opposite side of the door. These cross rails are provided withflanges 15 which pass through slots 16 in the outer side stile plates and are preferably secured by means of solder 17, but they may be secured in any other desired man.- ner. This method of joining the stiles and cross rails is used on both sides of the door so that the corresponding parts are numbered alike. By this arrangement of join,- ing, a strong and practically indestructible connection is made and one which presents a neat, appearance from the exterior of the door.
The top crossy rail'outer plate 9 is provided' on its upper edge with a rearwardly extending flange 18 which has apertures, through whicha fastening is passed in assembling the door and its lower edge is provided with a rearwardly downwardly and again rearwardly downwardly and forwardly extending flange 19', the lateral edges of which are cut diagonally to closely engage the moldings 7.
The plate 10 of the middle cross rail is provided on its upper edge with a rearwardly, upwardly and again rearwardly, upwardly and forwardly extending Harige 20 having diagonal edges for engaging the moldings. 7 and.. on. its.; lower. edge. with.. an
irregularly shaped molding 21 which has an upwardly extending flange 22. The lateral edges of said moldings are also diagonal for engaging the moldings 5. The bottom cross rail outer plate 11 is provided on its upper edge with a stepped molding 23 which has a downwardly extending flange 24, and the molding 23 also has its lateral edges cut diagonally for the purpose hereinbefore mentioned. A rearwardly extending flange 25 is provided on the lower edge of the outer plate 11. v
Secured to the inside of the top cross rail outer plate 9 by means of screws 26, is an inner cross rail 27 which has a flange 28 which rests on and is secured to the rearwardly extending portion 19 of the cross rail. Said inner cross rail is provided on its upper edge with a forwardly, upwardly and rearwardly extending portion 29, which' forms a recess 30 for a purpose hereinafter described.
A plate 31, which forms one side of' the lower panel of the door, is provided on its upper edge with an outwardly extending flange 32, secured to the rearwardly extending portion 20 of the cross rail outer plate 10 by means of screws 33'. The lower edge of said p late 31 is provided with a forwardly, 'downwardly and rearwardly extending portion 34 which forms a recess 35 for a purpose hereinafter described. The plate 31 is also connected to the flanges 22 and 24 of the middle and bottom cross rail outer plates by screws 36 and to the inner stiles 37 and 39 by means of screws 38.
A U-shaped reinforcing bar 31 is secured by suitable means vto the plate 31 near its lower edge and extends outwardly to engage the inner side of the plate 11, of the bottom cross rail and prevent said plate 11 from being forced inwardly.
Inner stile plates 37 and 39 are provided onthe interior of' the stile plates 1 and 2 and said stile plates 37 and 39 are provided throughout their entire length with forwardly. outwardly and rearwardly extending portions 40 and key slots 41. These inner stiles are also provided on their inner ,edges withoutwardly extending portions 43 which overlap the flanges 6 of the moldings 5. and screws 42 secure the panel plate 31, flanges 6 and outwardly extending portions 43 together.
Outwardly extending Hanges 44 are 'provided on the inner edges of the inner stile plates at the portion in which the upper panel of the door is placed. and said flanges 44 are secured to the flanges 7 ofthe outer plates by means of screws 45.
The outer plates 3 and 4 of the stiles on the side B of thedoor are formed similarly to the outer plates 1 and 2. with the exception that the moldings 5 are formed slightly different on.l their inner edges at the portions engaged by the top panel of the door. In this case the flanges 6 are integral with the right angles flanges 46, which form the lateral supports for a top panel 47, as best shown in Fig. 5. This top panel 47 may be formed of any suitable material but it is preferably made of glass.
The cross .rail outer plate 12 is similar in form to the rail plate 9, with the exception of the lower edge, which has an irregularly shaped molding 48, provided with an inwardly extending flange 49. The cross rail outer plate 13 is similar to the cross rail plate l0 with the exception of its upper edge, which is provided with an irregularly shaped molding 50 having a flange 5l. The flanges 49 and 51 of the cross rail, act as the top and bottom supports for the panel 47 and they abut against the outwardly extending portions of' the flanges 19 and 20.
The cross rail outer plate 14 is similar to the cross rail plate 11 and is secured to an inner plate 52 and to the side stiles 3 and 4 in a manner similar to the securing of the like plates on the opposite side of the door. This inner plate 52 is provided on its lower edge with a recessed portion 53 which is similar in form to the recessed portion 34 of the panel plate 3l. A reinforcing bar 52 similar to the bar 31 is secured to the plate 52 near its lower edge and projects outwardly to abut against the outer plate 14 to strengthen the same. The upper edge of the plate 52 is secured to the moldings 50 and 22 of the cross rail outer plate 13 by means of' screws 54. The flanges 24 of the lower cross rail outer plate 14, is connected to the plate 52 by screws 55. Inner stile plates 56 are provided on the interior of the stile plates 3 and 4 and are made similar in form to the plates 37 and 39 with the exception of their inner edges at the portion where the upper panel 47 is located. The inner edges in this instance are on a line par allel with the side of the door. The inner plate 52, flanges 6 andthe outwardly extending edges 43 of the inner stile plates are connected together in a manner similar to the oining of like parts on the opposite side A of the door. It will be seen from the drawings, that the portions of the inner plates of the side stiles, which are bent to form the slots 41, form rigid supports which rest against the inside of the stile outer plates. thereby providing a stiffening means for the same.
In assembling the door, thel sides A and B are formed in the manner hereinbefore .described. A frame composed of top bars 57 and side bars 58 is inserted in the recesses formed by the recessed portions of theinner y 4by the recessed portions of the inner plates at the top and lateral edges of the side A. Keys 59 which are approximately of dumbbell shape in cross section are then .forced from the lower edge of the door into the slots 41 on the opposite sides of the door and a plate 60 is connected to the angl-e portions 61 of the bars 58. The recessed portions 34 and flanges 25, during the assembling of the door, lie parallel with the outer sides of said door, to permit the introduction of the keys 59 and plate 60 and after these parts are inserted, the portions 84 and flanges 25 are l bent up and secured to said bar 60 by means of screws 62, after said bar 60 has been secured in place.
After the side of the door are joined in the manner above described, the upper panel 47 is inserted between the flanges 46, 49 and 51 and secured by means of a rectangular frame 63 which inturn is held in place by means of screws 64.
Any suitable filling 65, which is preferably fire and sound proof, may be interposed -in the space provided between the sides.

A metallic door comprising two sides, each having side stiles and cross rails, inner plates arranged within the stiles and rails, key slots provided in said inner stile plates, keys provided in said slots, hook shaped portions forming recesses provided on one edge of said inner stile* plates and on one edge of the inner plates of the top and bottom cross rails, and a bar frame closing the said re cesses to which each side of the door is secured. t

A metallic .door comprising two sides having stiles, cross rails and panels, each of said side stiles consisting of inner and outer plates, the outer plates being provided on their inner edge with molding and on their outer edges with rearwardly extending flanges, and the inner plates being secured to said moldings at their inner edges and the outer edges or said inner plates being pro.
vided with hook shaped portions forming recesses, panel plates connecting the lower part of said inner stile plates and provided on their lower edges with hook shaped portions forming recesses. certain of said cross rails being secured to said panel plates` each side of` said top cross rail consisting of inner andouter plates, said top cross rail inner plates being provided on their upper edges with hook shaped portions forming recesses, keV slots proiided in said inner stile plates, kevs provided in said slots. and a bar frame closing the recesses in said hook shaped portions to which each side of the door is secured.

A metallic door comprising two sides, each sid-e having stile members and top, middle and bottom cross rails and a papel plate. each of said stile members consisting of outer and inner plates. said outer plates being provided on their inner edges with molding and on their outer edges with rearwardlv extending flanges. and said inner plates being secured at their inner edges to the inner edges of said outer plates andpbeing provided at their ,outer edges with forwardlv. outwardly and rearwardly extending portion forming recesses which abut -against said rearwardly extending flanges portions on the stiles, and a bar frame clos,- ing said recesses to which each side of the door 'is secured.
