ADJUSTABLE BEARING FOR IACKS.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. in, rain.
Application filed October 11, 1913. Serial No. 794,675.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS B. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Carlton, in the county of Yamhill and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bearings for Jacks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to adjustable bearings for jacks, and has for its object the production of a simple and eflicient means for firmly attaching the head to the jack in such a manner as to hold the body of the jack at an angle to the head.
Another object of the invention is the production of a simple and eficient adjustable bearing which is so constructed as to allow the same to be, readily adjusted upon a jack in. order to hold the jack at a set angle to the supporting head thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear throughout the following specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the jack showing the adjustable bearing connected thereto. Fig.
2 is a section taken on line 2,2, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of one of the adjustable jaws adapted to hold the head of the jack in engagement With plunger thereof. j
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the body of the jack which is provided with a knob 2 at its lower end, which knob is adapted to fit in the concave socket formed in the lower supporting head 4. This lower supporting head 4: is provided with a plurality of projecting teeth 5 which are adapted to grip a support for firmly anchoring the jack in a set position. A plurality of adjustable jaws 6 are carried by the inner face of the head 4, and these jaws. are substantially semi-circular, having transversely extending slots 7 formed therein for facilitating the passing of the bolts 8 therethrough,
whereby the aws 6 will be firmly anchored in engagement with the head 4. The inner face 9 of each jaw 6 is concave so as to fit snugly around the knob 2 formed in the body 1 of the jack. It will, therefore, be
the body and seen by carefully considering Fig. 2 that by having the jaws 6 away from the knob 2 the body 1 may be readily removed from the head 4 when it is so desired.
head 28 is carried upon the knob 27 and a plurality of adjustable jaws 30 similar in construction tothe jaws 6 are connected to the lower face of the head 28 bymeans of the bolts 8 passing therethrough. It should be understood that these jaws 30 are of similar construction relative to the jaws 6 above described.
ft, of course, should be understood that any suitable or desired means may be em.- ployed for raising the plunger 11 which car= rics the knob 27.
It should be understood from the foregoing description thatthe heads 4: and 28 may be adjusted at difierent angles to accommodate themselves to a support and also to the object which is adapted to be elevated by means of the jack for the reason that the adjustable j aw 6 may be adjusted so as to firmly hold the body of the jack 1 at a set angle to the head, and likewise the adjustable jaws 30 may also engage the knob 27 so as to hold the head 28 at a desired angle to the body of the jack 1.
What is claimed is A ball and socket joint for a lifting jack comprising a knob, a head carried by said knob, said head provided with laterally adj'ustable clamping plates, said plates provided with alined elongated transversely extending slots, clamping bolts passing through said slots and engaging-said heads forholding said plates in an adjusted position upon said head whereby said heads may be clamped in firm engagement relative to said knobs, said plates provided with curved inner faces for fitting snugly in engagement with said knob.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in,prescnce of two witnesses.
