ROBERT DONALIDSON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
WIND OW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. to, rare.
Application filed May 6, 1914. Serial No. 836,611.
To all whom it a: ag concern:
Be it known that L'Roenn'r DoNALosoN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ,Windows, of
which the following is a specification.
My inventionrelates to improvements in windows, and more particularly to an improved window sashj provided with laterally movable adj ustably mounted weather strips adapted, when the sash is closed, to be moved outwardly into the sash grooves or ways of the window frame whereby the sash will be close fitting or air tight, together with-improved means for operating said movable Weather strips from the inner sides of the window sash.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a window sash with improved laterally movable air excluding members or weather strips and means for adjusting and operating the same, and while I have shown my improvements applied to a wooden sash and a window of the reversible type, it should be understood that the improvements may be readily embodied or incorporated in a metal window of any suitable form or type.
lVith the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments/in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a View of the inner side of an upper window sash constructed in accordance with my invention as it appears mounted in a suitable window frame. Fig. 2, an edge view of the same detached. Fig. 3, an enlarged detailed view of the outer side of the window sash, the easing surrounding the adjustably mounted eccentric mechanism being removed and the dotted lines indicating the position of the parts when the weather or sash strips are moved outwardly. Fig. 4 a cross sectional view taken on line 4- 1 of Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The window sash 1, and frame 2, may be of any suitable and convenient construction,
the sash 1, in the present instance, being reversibly or pivotally mounted in the window frame by means of laterally extending hearing bolts 3, carried in sash cord hooks 4:, the latter being connected to the sash cords 5, extending over pulleys 6, in the window frame and provided with suitable weights.
The window sash l, is provided at its sides with laterally movable weather or guide strips 8, adapted to slide within and to be moved outwardly in contact with the inner sides of the window frame 2. As a means of mounting, adjusting, and operating or actuating the movable guide strips 8, which, in the present instance, are mounted upon the outer sides of the sash, said strips are connected to and mounted upon an inwardly extending slide or web portion 8*, provided with bearing openings adapted to receive and contain eccentrically mounted actuating bolts 9, said bolts being provided at one end with eccentric heads 9, and at the other with squared or angular shaped portions 9 the latter extending into angular shaped recesses 10, on the inner sides of the sash. As a means for simultaneously actuating or. oscillating the eccentrically mounted bolts 9, lever members 11 are mountedon the angular shaped portions 9', extending-into the recesses 10, the free ends of said levers 11 beingprovidcd with vertically movable operating links 12, provided with handle studs 12*. As a means for adjusting and regulating the movements or throw of the movable side strips 8, as well as changing the angle or inclination of said strips relative to the sides of the sash and the contiguous portions of the window frame, said eccentric heads 9*,
are mounted in vertically movable bearing blocks 13, secured, in the present instance, upon angle irons 14:, through the medium of guide pins 15, on the inclined or beveled sides 13, of the bearing blocks 13. As a each other the angle of the strips 8, may be changed or varied to meet the varying demands and conditions of actual service.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. In a window, a sash, adj ustably mounted bearing blocks carried thereby, actuating bolts eccentrically mounted in said bearing blocks, and side strips carried on and adapted to be operated by said actuating bolts.
2. In a Window, a sash, a pair of adjustably mounted bearing blocks mounted on each side of said sash, actuating bolts provided with eccentric members carried in said bearingblccks, and side strips carried by said actuating bolts.
3. In a window, a sash, bearing blocks adjustably mounted thereon, actuating bolts eccentrically mounted in said bearing blocks, side strips mounted on and carried by said actuating bolts, and means for operating said actuating bolts.
4. In a Window, a sash, a pair of vertically movable bearing blocks mounted on each side of said sash, eccentric heads mounted in said blocks, actuating bolts carried by said eccentric heads, laterally movable side strips carried by said actuating bolts, and means for simultaneously actuating the latter.
5. In a window,a window frame, a window sash, movable side strips carried by the latter in cooperative relation to said frame, actuating bolts extending through the sides of said sash and terminating in eccentric heads, and bearing blocks carrying said eccentric heads and adj ustably mounted on said sash whereby the throw and inclination of said side strips may be regulated.
6. In a window, a sash, actuating bolts extending transversely therethrough, side strips mounted on said actuating bolts, vertically adjustable bearing blocks mounted in front of the latter, eccentric heads mounted therein and connected to said actuating bolts, and lever members detachably connected to said actuating bolts for simultaneously operating the same.
7. In a window, a sash, side strips provided with web portions movably mounted on the sides of said sash, actuating bolts extending through the sides of said sash and said web portions and terminating at one end in eccentric heads and at the other in angular shaped portions, actuating levers mounted on said angular shaped portions, bearing members for said eccentric heads, and means for adjusting said bearing members whereby to regulate the movements of said actuating bolts and side strips.
8. In a window, a sash, side strips provided with web members slidably mounted at the sides thereof, actuating bolts extending through said sides and web members and terminating in eccentric heads, angle irons mounted in front of said Web members. bearing blocks carrying said eccentric heads and vertically adjustable on said angle irons, lever members mounted on said actuating bolts, and operating links connected to said lever members on each side of said sash.
In testimony whereof I have aliixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT D ONALDSON.
