Be it known that l, HGH DE HAVEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooln lyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Compound Binding-Stay, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved compound binding or reinforcing stay more especially designed lfor use on light wooden packing boxes and like receptacles, and arranged to permit of quickly and conveniently attaching the stayv to the box without the use of a large number of nails or similar fastening devices.
ln order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a thin strip of metal provided throughout its length with apertures, and a covering strip of a fabric material coated on one face with an adhesive sub stance and overlying the said metal strip and being fastened throughout by the adhesive substance, the latter also extending into the said apertures, the said fabric strip projecting laterally beyond the side edges of the metal strip so that when the gummed face of the stay is moistened the adhesive substance of both the fabric strip and that contained in the apertures of the metal strip cause the stay to adhere firmly to the surface of the box or other receptacle to which the stay is applied for binding and reinforcing purposes.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

'lhe compound binding stay is formed of a thin strip of metal A provided with a packing formed of a strip B of fabric material, such as cloth or paper, coated at one face with an adhesive substance C and of a width considerably in excess of that of the metal strip A so that the fabric strip B when fastened to the metal strip A projects be yond the side edges thereof, as plainly indicated in the drawings. In addition to fastening the strips A and B together by the adhesive substance, use is also made of clenching prongs A struck up alongthe side edges of kthe metal strip A and passing through the fabric strip B to be clenched on the outer non-gunnned face thereof, as plainly indicated in the drawings. The metal strip A is further provided with a row of apertures A2 extending throughout the length of the `metal strip A intermediate the two rows of prongs A', as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. The strips A and B are united with each other by being passed between suitable rollers so that thefreshly applied adhesive substance C is firmly pressed in contact with the metal strip A and at the same time the prongs A are forced through the fabric strip B and are clenched on the outer nongtumned face thereof. Portions of the adhesive substance C pass into and ill the apertures A2, as indicated in Fig. 3. The stay produced in this manner is hung up for drying of the adhesive substance C, and when it is desired to use the stay on a box D, as shown in Fig. l, then the said stay is moistened by a sponge or other means on the gummed face of the fabric strip B and this moistened gummed face is applied to the surface of the boX D so as to adhere to the same and thus securely fasten the binding stay in place on the box D.
It will be noticed that the projecting side portions of the fabric stay B firmly adhere to the surface of the box D owing to the adhesive substance thereon, and the metal strip A is caused to adhere to the box owing to the adhesive substance contained in the apertures A2 and in contact with the surface of the box D.
ln practice one end of the strip is preferably attached to the box by the use of a nail E driven through the last aperture A2 into the box D, and then the stay is bent around the box until the other end meets the fastened end, and this end is preferably fastened in place by the use of a nail E driven through the last aperture at this end into the box D (see Fig.l l).
lt is understood that the metal strip A on account of being very thin and pliable can be readily bent around the box to bind or reinforce the same, and the metal strip is completely concealed by the fabric strip B.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A stay, comprising a metal strip having apertures and a fabric strip coated with an adhesive substance attached to the said metal strip and projecting laterally beyond the side edges thereof, the adhesive substance filling the said apertures.
2. A stay, comprising a metal strip having struck-up clenching prongs and a fabric strip coated on one face with an adhesive substance for fastening the strips together and for fastening the stay in place on a receptacle, the said prongs passing through the fabric strip and being clenched thereon.
3. A stay for boxes and other receptacles, comprising a metal strip having rows of struck-up clenchng prongs arranged adjacent the side edges of the said metal strip, the latter having apertures intermediate the said rows of prongs, and a fabric strip coated on one face with an adhesive substance for fastening the fabric strip to the metal strip, the said fabric strip projecting laterally beyond the side edges of the metal strip for fastening the stay to a receptacle, the said clenching prongs passing through the fabric strip and being clenched on the outer face thereof and the said adhesive substance extending into the said apertures.
