ecification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1915,
Appiicationfi le d May 12, 1913. Serial No. 767,212.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that LCLARK C. VVORTLEY, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at 17.5 Dearbo'rn street, Chicago; in the county of Cook and State of, IlllDOlS, have invented new and useful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is aspccification." This invention relates particularly to signs adaptedfor street purposes and pro vided with illuminating means; andthc primary'object' of the invention is to provide as improved arrangement of construction. possessing certain advantages of" use and presenting a pleasin appearance.
The invention is i'lustrate'd in the preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a broken perspective view constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a broken vertical section taken as indicated at line '2 6f Fig: "1";
Fig. 3', a broken "longitudinal section; Fig. 4, a sectional view similar to Fig. 2 showing a modification at the construction; and Fig.- 5, a broken'verticalsection taken as indi' cated at line 5 of Fig. 1.
Referring to. Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the construction comprises a horizontall dis posed frame A, which may bee ected with a building in any suitable manner and also supported by chains l fafs'eries of illuminable sign-sections, or panel-equipped devices B depending from the frame A; an
illuminable sign-section, or panel-equipped illuminable device C surmounting the frame A; and an illuminable sign-section, or panele'quipped illuminable device D suspended beneath the devices B.
The frame A may be of any suitable construction. It preferably comprises horizontally disposed angle-bars 2 constituting the foundation. framework for the whole structure. The angle-bars 2- have inturned flanges 2 and upturned flanges 2.
The device 0 comprises a frame 3 connected with the vertical flanges 2 and including a top member T he device s equipped with transparent panels 4: which may be made removable in any desired manner. v
Illuminable devices B are designed to attend. individual panels for letters. Each device B comprises a frame 5 equipped with transparent panels 6 which are made re movable in any preferred manner. The vices B are horizontally aimed and are sepmembers '5 "Whichnre securely joined to horizontal flanges of the angle-bars 2. The horizontally elongated'device D preferably has its upper side open as indicated at 11 and dispbsed just below the intermediate ones of the devices B, being separated there from by a spacelQ. The device D is supported by re s 13, whose lower ends are co'nnected with the frame-member at the botton' o f the device l) while their upper ends divide into branches 13 which are'connected with the horizontal flanges of the angle i Z I. The horizontal fianges2 of the an le-bars 2 are connected at intervais'by cross. ars 14 WhichhrVetO support a horizontally disposedconduit 1.5 which carries electric co ndoctors liGHf'Ijhe conductors lfiser've to supply current to the lamps 17 iocated the deiiicc B' and th eiam'pbr lamp's'lifi'ldcatd in the device 0.
It will be noted that by reason of the upward divergence of the panels 1.6 of the device D and the disposition of the device I) with relation to the devices i3. light Wiii be supplied from the 12m. is 17 for the device D; also the devices B serve to shield the device D from rain to a considerable extent; also, the arrangement? is such that in the daytime light will be admitted freely to the in i It Wiii also op at its ismps 3.7 in the de diverging ting maximum top the iig.
vices B will iilumina of the device 1). thus 9 illuminated surface W b the of i luminating cost. A M r vantage resulting from the device I) icing a: estrus-ted with an open top and open ends and suspended in spaced relation to the devices B is t ton-like frame thus produced iiebic to,
7.2m s m 3. i105 pressure 1 minimum ner shown in Fig. 1.
The construction shown in Figs; 4, and 5 is similar to the construction already described, and the corresponding parts are similarl designated. The construction is modifie to the extent of providing a con duit 15 above the central portion of the device D and servin to contain conductors 16 which supply a lamp or lamps l7 disposed in the device D. In this construction, the frame of the device D is suspended by vertically disposed bolts 13", while the crossmembers 11 at the top of the frame of the device D are of such substantial construction as to afford an adequate support for the conduit .15 and the'body of the device D. The frame of the device D is further reinforced in this construction by employing vertical rods13 which connect the upper and lower frame-members of said device, as will be better understood from Fig. 5.
The construction described is cheap, durable, presents a pleasing appearance, and is economical in maintenance.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understandin only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a sign, the combination of a substantially horizontal frame, a series of alined chambers depending therefrom and having transparent panels, illuminating means in said chambers, a horizontally elongated frame open at its top and, ends suspended beneath said chambers in alinement therewith and in spaced relation thereto, and transparent side panels carried by said elongated frame forming; an elongated chamber, whereby said lower panels are illuminated by the illuminating ,means in said upper chambers.
2. In a sign, the combination of a substantially horizontal frame, a series of alined chambers depending therefrom and having upwardly converging transparent panels, and open lower ends, illuminating means in said chambers, and a horizontal elongated frame suspended beneath said chambers in alinement therewith and in spaced relation thereto and having upwardly diverging transparent panels, forming an elongated chamber open at its top, whereby said lower panels are illuminated by the illuminating means in said upper chambers.
3. In a sign, the combination of a horizontal frame, a series of alined chambers suspended therefrom open at their bottoms and equipped with transparent panels, illuminating means in said chambers, an elongated device beneath said chambers in alinement therewith and in spaced relation thereto, comprising an elongated frame and transparent upwardly divergent panels forming a chamber open at its top, and rods connecting said upper and lower frames, whereby the panels of said lower device are illuminated by the illuminating means in said upper chambers.
