To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gsznoosz WYSZA- 'rYoKI, subject of the Emperor of Austria- Hungary, residing at J ohnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Chairs and Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rail chair and joint.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a chair adapted to be secured to the railroad ties for supporting the adjacent ends of the rails which are clamped thereon without the employment of any members traversing the webs of the rails.
A further object is to provide a rail chair having resllient rail flange engaging means at one side thereof and a screw retained web engaging means at its opposite side and whereby adjacent rails are connected together in longitudinal alinement without requiring any alteration or perforating of the rails.
A still further object is to provide a rail joint and chair by means of which the ends of adjacent rails are firmly secured together in seated positions being readily adjustable upon the manipulation of a single screw and being of a form that is easy and cheap to manufacture.
"With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of adjacent rail ends in locked position upon the ties showing the employment of the present device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line IIIIII of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar transverse sectional view taken upon a line extending longitudinally of one of the supporting ties. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the chair portion of the device, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the removable locking bar thereof.

the end portions 10 of two rails are disclosed mounted upon the base plate 11 of the rail chair device as illustrated in Fig. 3 and between a vertically extending side plate 12 thereof and a relatively low side flange 13 upon the opposite side, of the said base plate While the plate is secured to the ties 1 1 upon which it is mounted by means of spikes 15 which engage the base plate flange 13 at one side thereof and adjacent the lateral projections 16 of said flange.
With the rail ends positioned between the plate 12 and the flange 13, a removable bar 17 as illustrated in Fig. 6 is adapted to be slidably positioned between the plate 12 and the webs 18 of the two rails and in engagement with the upper sides of the adjacent base flanges 19 and the lower side of the railtreads 20 as best illustrated in Fig. 3. When so positioned, a screw 21 is inserted through the central perforation 22 of the side plate and screwed into the socket 23 of'the side block 24 of the bar 17, by which means the removable bar is firmly secured to the side plate of the chair with the rail ends locked thereon.
The projections 16 of the base plate are seated within recesses 25 formed in the ties 14 and are provided with bottom sockets 26 in which are seated coil springs 27 for resiliently retracting hooks 28 carried by said extensions and mounted for turning as well as for longitudinal movements within perforations 29 of the extensions. By this arrangement it will be seen that the hooks 28 may be turned back upon the extensions as illustrated in Fig. 5 when the rails are removed and that when the rails are positioned upon the base plate of the chair, the hooks may be turned around and forcibly withdrawn sufficiently to allow them to seat upon the upper faces of the flanges 19 of the rails for holding the rails in position as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 1.
From this detailed description of the invention, the complete operation thereof will be apparent in that the chair member being positioned upon the ties, the rail ends are readily locked thereon in the manner heretofore described. The spikes 15 are positioned to engage the side flange 13 at one side of the base plate as heretofore set forth, while at the opposite side thereof the spikes will be positioned adjacent the opposite ends of the side plate 12 being driven into the ties and having their heads engaging the up- Patented Feb. 16, 1915.

When desired to remove the rails, the hooks 28 are slightly withdrawn and turned outwardly thus disengaging the same from the rail flanges and the screw 21 is removed which allows the removable locking bar 17 to be slidably forced out of its engagement with the side plate and the rails.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described comprising in combination with railway ties and the ends of adjacent rails, a chair comprising a base plate having a side plate at one edge thereof and a flange at its opposite edge with the said rail ends positioned therebetween, a slidable locking bar positioned between said side plate and the webs of said rails, and resilient locking hooks carried by said flange and seated upon the adjacent edge portions of the base flanges of said rails.
2. A device of the class described comprising a base plate, a side plate at one edge thereof, a relatively low flange at the opposite edge thereof, resiliently mounted longitudinally slidable and revoluble hook members carried by said flange, a side bar having. an integral block portion at one side thereof in contact with the said side plate and a securing screw between said side plate and block portion.
8. A device of the class described comprising in combination with railway ties having recesses therein, a chair base plate, a marginal flange at one edge of said base plate" having lateral integral extensions seated within the said recesses and having bottom socketstherein, horizontally movable hooks revolubly carried by said flange and projecting into said sockets, encircling expansion springs for said hooks within said sockets, a perforated side plate upon the edge of said base plate opposite the said flange, a removable side bar having a side block portion positio-nable'in contact within said side plate and above said base plate and a securing screw through said perforation and engaging the said block portion.
