Be it known that I, ROBERT W. HOWELL, citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Kirkwood, St. Louis county, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Stove, of which the following is a specification.
My invention appertains to heating stoves, and one object of the same resides in producing a stove of the character specified have ing means for reducing the fuel consumption.
A further object resides in providing a novel means for applying a down draft or hot blast to the fire pot.
A still further object resides in providing a fire pot having a series of openings therethrough contiguous to its lower end and adapted to coperate with other openings formed in a vertically extending iiue situated within the lire pot opposite the openings therein so that a hot blast may pass through the iameand out of said fire pot.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a stove embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical section at right angles to Fig. 1 on the indicated line 2 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the indicated line 2 3 of Fig. 1, in a direction opposite te Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the indicated line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the indicated line 5 5 of Fig. 1, the magazine being wholly removed.
In the construction of the stove as shown the numeral 10 designates a base adapted to be supported by legs 11 in a common manner. The base 10 preferably is constructed of sheet metal and a sheet metal shell 12 is fixed to and rises from said base. A cast metal cover 13 is fixed to the upper margin of the shell 12 in a plane approximately parallel with and spaced from the base 10. The
base, shell and cover may be of any desired shape but I prefer the elliptical form as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5. These parts may be connected in any desired manner.

The cover 13 also is formed with an aperture, preferably circular, in its front end portion and a fire-pot 15, preferably formed of molded metal, is mounted in said aperture and extends within the front portion of the space inclosed by the shell. The fire-pot 15 preferably is suspended in a suitable manner from the cover 13. An ash chamber is formed by a sheet metal ring 16 located in the forward portion of the shell beneath and of larger diameter than the fire-pot 15 and a frame 17 is supported on and fitted to the top of said ring and extends beneath the lower end portion of said fire-pot. rlhe grate frame 17 preferably is formed with lugs 18 and a grate 19 of suitable construction is mounted on said lugs over the ash chamber. The grate 19 may be provided with a slidable portion or valve 2O of common construction adapted to be moved relative to the remainder of the grate and also adapted to be employed in connection with a removable tool (not shown) to shake the grate and precipitate all or any portion of the contents thereof into the ash chamber. An extension or neck 21 projects through an aperture in the lower portion of the forward end of the shell 12 and a door 22 is hinged at one end to said extension or neck and is connected at its opposite end by a latch 23 to the neck. transversely of the grate 19 through the neck 21 so as to open a passage through the center of said grate to the ash chamber. The central portion of the door 22 is apertured to form draft ports and a valve 24 face of the door 22 or be spaced therefrom.

Both end portions of the plate 27 extend into contact with the firepot 15. Draft ports 28, of any desired number, are formed in the plate 27 and all of said draft ports preferably are located near to and below the center of said plate.
A neck or collar 29 is mounted in the front of the shell 12 and communicates laterally with the upper end portion of the fire-pot within the space inclosed by the plate 27, and a valve or damper 30 is mounti rate the latter, a grate dis osed at the lower end of said lire pot, said re pot having formed therein Contiguous to its lower end, a plurality of longitudinally extending laterally spaced slots for establishing communication between the interiors of said ire pot and casing, a U-shaped plate disposed on the inner surface of said fire pot and extending longitudinally of the latter, said U-shaped plate being formed with a plurality of openings ooperating with the slots in said lire pot and having its upper and lower ends closed, the upper end of said U-shaped plate terminating contiguous to the upper end of the fire pot and communicating with an opening formed in the latter, also contiguous to its upper end, a laterally extending Hue having one end Communicating with the last mentioned opening in said fire pot and the other end thereof Communicating with an opening formed in said main casing and a damper secured to said main casing over the opening therein, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
