Upon-the shaft 24 I have mounted a series of sets ofregistr-y wheels-which sets are designated on the drawings as 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46 and 47, each set preferably comprising, as shown, three'or more wheels pro vided with numbers, the wheels ineach set being adapted to register units, tens, hundreds, etc., as is customary with various types of counting devices. a Each of. the
bearings 29 is provided with an upwardly projecting arm or lever 48 which has pivoted at its upper end a pawl 49 adapted to engage with the unit wheel, of a set of registry wheels. An ear 50, projecting forwardly from each of the bearings 29, is connected by a spring5l with the base of the frame, whereby the pawls are normally held in retracted position shown in Fig. 1, and a second spring 52, connected with the projecting end of each pawl and its corresponding ear 50, holds the free end of the pawl in engagement with its respective unit wheel. A spring 53 is provided for each registry wheel to yieldingly retain the same in any position to which it may have been rotated onthe shaft 24. It will be evident that jbytthe return springlO, the pawl and levers will be restored-to normal positionby the springs 51 and 52. While it will be evident that as many sets of registry wheels may be employed as there are registering devices on achange machine and that theunit wheel of each. set-may be moved forward one step only at each operation of its particular ejecregistry Wheels 40 are adapted to register fifty cent pieces; the set. 41, twenty-five cent pieces; the sets 42 and 43, ten cent pieces;
the set 44, five cent pieces; and the sets 45,
46 and 47, pennies. The coinejector of the machine with which this registering device is adapted to be employed, which. engages with the arm 37, discharges, when used as a changemachine, two pieces at each actuation 1 thereof, consequently in order to accurately :register and count, the number of coins required, it is necessary that the unit wheel of .theset 45-move two steps at each operation of its ejector. 'In. order that this may be accomplished the'bearing 38 is mounted in a lower planethan the bearings-29 so that the length of the arms 37 and 48 are diminished-and increased, respectively, thus imlparting a longer stroke to this particular arm 48 and moving the unitwheel of the set 45 two steps instead of one at each operation. If preferred,- however, all of the bearings may be mounted in the same plane and the unit wheel of the set 45 may be marked only with alternate figures as 2, 4, 6, etc., in which instance, movement of the wheel one step will register two coins.
The sets of registry, wheels are xloosely mounted on the shaft 24iand are adapted to be returned to initial position upon one revolution of said shaft in-a counter clockwise direction looking at Fig. 3. Such a connection between the wheels and the shaft is well known and need not be explained in detail. I have, however, designed novel' mechanism for locking and releasing the shaft 24 which will now be explained.

lVhile Ihave shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention it will be apparent that various forms of the invention may be employed with counting machines of various types and that the in-' vention is not restricted to the registering of coins of a less denomination than one dollar, but that'the same idea may be extended to machines adaptedto register coins or currency of any denomination. Furthermore, the invention isnot restricted to the construction and arrangement of the parts as shown and described, but various changes in the mechanical details of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the material advantages thereof.
I claim:
comprising a plurality of coin ejecting devices and a series of operating buttons, and a registering mechanism adapted to replace the coin magazine of said machine and comprising a set of registry wheels for each coin ejecting device and a pivoted lever p0- sitioned in the path of each coin ejecting de-, vice and connected with a corresponding set of registry wheels whereby the sets of wheels will be actuatedat each operation,
of their respective coin ejecting devices. 2. The combination of a change machine,
and a detachable registering mechanism, said mechanism adapted to replace the coin magaterposed' in the zine of said machine, comprising a plurality of sets of coaXially mounted registry wheels, a plurality of pivotally mounted levers having their lower ends arranged in the path of the coin ejecting devices of the change chine, a pawl mounted upon the upper end of each of said levers in position to engage with the unit wheels in said sets and means for maintaining said pawls in engagemei, with their respective wheels whereby upon operation of the change machine said wheels will be actuated to register the number of coins designated by said coin machine.
3. The combination of a change machine having operating keys for ejecting coins from the machine, and a removable device for computing change totals temporarily replacingthe coin magazineof said change machine and operable through the agency of the operating keys of said change machine.
4. The combination of a change machine provided with a plurality of coin ejecting devices, and a removable device for computing change totals temporarily replacing the coin magazine of said change machine and provided with registering mechanisms inpath of travel of and operable by said ejecting devices.
The combination with a change machine, comprising a plurality of coin ejectingdevices and keys for operating the same, of a counting device removably connected with said machine and adapted to replace the coin magazine of the machine, said counting device comprising a plurality of sets of registering wheels and a pivotally mounted operating lever for each set of registering wheels, said levers being positioned in the path of movement of said coin ejecting devices when the counting device is substituted for the coin magazine of the ma 1. The combination of a change machine prising a plurality of counters and adapted for detachable application to said support in place of the coin magazine structure and to be operated by said ejectors.
