To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Louis ROSENBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of a pressing-machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same; Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view on the line 3-3, Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is a detail transverse sectional view on the line 1-4, Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a detail rear elevational view of the springhousing or casing; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevational view, partly in section, of the lower part of the machine; and Fig. 7 is a plan view on the line 7-7, Fig. 6.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in garment pressing machines, the objects of my present invention being to provide an eflicient, powerful, and easily-operated machine of the kind stated of durable preferably all metallic con struction, and to improve generally upon machines of the kind described.
With these objects in view, my present invention resides in certain novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and
combination of parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, A indicates a suitably preferably all metallic table or frame made up of or including upstanding standards 1-1 and a top 2, each of said standards 1-1 preferably integrally comprising vertically-disposed members or legs 3 and upper and lower horizontallydisposed or cross-members 4 and 5, respectively. Rigidly tying standards 1-1 together at the front of table A, is a horizontally-disposed tie or cross-member 6 having its opposite ends fixed to standards 1-1 adjacent the lower ends of legs 3. At the front of table A, standards 1-1 are each provided preferably integrally with an upwardly presented approximately rectangular extension 7 upon which is preferably fixed av horizontally-disposed ironing or pressing plate 8, as clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 2.
Suitably fixed to, and extending lengthwise between, standards 1-1 at the rear of table A, as seen clearly in Fig. 1, is an approximately rectangular casting or the like 9 centrally cutaway, as at 10. At the upper and lower sides of its said cutaway portion 10, casting 9 is centrally thickened to provide bearings 11-11 havingalining openings or perforations in which loosely and slidable fits an elongated verticallydisposed cylindrical bar 12 having fixed thereto at its lower 'end a collar, head or enlargement 13 preferably flat on its upper face.
1-1 indicates a member having approximately the shape in side elevation of an inverted L, comprising preferably integrally a relatively short horizontallv-disposed tubular arm or portion 15 and a relatively long vertically-disposed arm or portion 16 longitudinally provided on its outer face with a strengthening web 17. On its under or inner side, arm or portion 15 of member 1-1 is provided with an enlargement 18 cut away as at 19 and transversely perforated to loosely receive the upper end-portion of bar 12, as seen clearly in Fig. 2, arm 15 being provided with an alining perforation, asat 20, in which the upper end of bar 12 loosely fits. Disposed within said cut away portion 19 of enlargement 18 and having threaded engagement with bar 12, is a nut 21, whereby member 14, although mounted on bar 12, is permitted to rotatablv move relatively to table A, for purposes hereinafter appearing, a suitable ball or other anti-friction bearing 22 being preferably interposed between the upper face of nut 21 and the under face of arm 15, so that member 14 and its carried parts mav rotatably move relatively to table A with little or no friction. At its lower end. arm or portion 16 of member 14 is provided with a forwardly-presented split-collar extension 23 adapted with a cooperating split-collar portion 24: fixed thereto to loosely encircle and thereby engage with bar 12, as seen clearly in Figs. 1 and 2.
Loosely and slidably fitting in horizontally-disposed arm or portion 15 of member 14, is a bar 25 adapted at its outer end to adjustably carry a sad-iron or the like 26 normally out of engagement with pressingplate 8, but adapted, on the actuation of bar 12 and its carried member 14 out ofnormal position, as hereinafter more fully appearing, to bear upon or engage with plate 8, as seen in Fig. 2, for pressing or ironing operations, as will be well understood. The bore of arm or portion 15 is preferably reduced adjacent its forward end to provide an annular shoulder or the like, as at 27, against which shoulder a collar 28 fixed on the rear end of. bar 25 is adapted to engage to prevent the forward removal of bar 25 and its carried iron 26 from arm 15, Bar 25 being readily longitudinally slidable in arm 15, it will be evident that its carried iron 26 may be easily adjustably moved laterally relatively to plate 8 as may be required for the particular pressingor ironing operations or work being done. It will also be seen that, member 14 being rotatably movable on its carrying or supporting bar 12, the iron 26 may be rotatably moved to one side or the other longitudinally relatively to plate 8 as may also be required in the particular pressing or ironing operations being had.

tween the upper'face of casting 9 and the under face of enlargement 18 of arm 15, is a vertically-movable cylindrical casing or housing 33 open at its lower end and longitudinally slotted, as at 34. to receive and cooperate with an outwardly-presented guiding-lug or key 35 provided preferably integrally on the outer face of cup-shaped member 32. Arranged in casing or housing 33- and interposed between the upper end thereof and the base or bottom of cup-shaped member 32,.as seen clearly in Fig. 2, is a coiled spring or other suitable resilient member 36 adapted to normally yieldingly hold bar 12 with said member 14 and its carried parts in raised or elevated inoperative pressing position relatively to table A and its'ironing or pressing-plate 8. To hold spring. 36 against'rot atorv movement relatively to its housing 33, I preferably provide transverse set-screws or the like'37, as
also seen in Fig. 2; and that work or articles on table-top 2 may not accidentally or otherwise interfere with the proper movements of casing or housing 33 in the operations of the machine, an upstanding somewhat arcuate wall 38 preferably integral with casting 9 is provided there around, as seen clearly in Fig. 1.
Projecting downwardly from, and preferably integral with, the lower side of casting 9 is a pair of spaced-apart lugs disposed on opposite sides of bar 12 and having preferably the shape in side elevation seen clearly in Fig. 6, said lugs providing a pair of obliquely downwardly and forwardly presented ears 39-39 and a pair of obliquely downwardly and rearwardly presented ears 4040. Having its 'rear end fitting between, and pivotally connected to, said pair of ears 3939 is a forwardly presented treadle 41 preferably strengthened on its under side by a longitudinally extending vertically disposed web 42 and provided at its forward or free end with a step or foot-receiving flat portion 43. Treadle 41 at its rear end is provided with an obliquely rearwardly and downwardly presented bifurcated extension or cam-member 44 adapted to straddle bar 12, as seen clearly in Fig. 7. Fitting between, and pivotally connected to, said ears 4040 directly in the rear of treadle cammember 44, is a second cam-member 45 having a bifurcated extension or portion 46 adapted also to straddle bar 12 and to be slidably engaged by coiiperating cam-member 44, as seen clearly in-Figs. 2 and 6. This cam-member 45, in side elevation. has preferably the shape or form seen in Fig. 6, and at the lower end of its said bifurcated eXten sion 46 is adapted to camwise engage-with the upper face of collar 13,-whereby treadle 41 is normally held, by tension of spring 36, in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and in full lines in Fig. 6. On depressing treadle 41 cam-member 45 will be pivotally moved outwardly and bar 12 and its carried parts consequently lowered, iron 26 being brought, against the tension of spring 36, into operative pressing engagement with plateS On releasing treadle 41 the parts, under the pull of spring 36, will be quickly returned to normal position. I
Having pivotal connection with, and being disposed on opposite sides of, web 42, is a pair of preferably triangularly shaped members 47, and fulcrumed atits forward end between said members or parts 47, as seen in Figs. 2 and 6, is a rearwardly pre sented auxiliary cam-actuating member in the form preferably of a lengthwise adjustable bar or rod 48. At its opposite or rear end, rod or bar 48 is longitudinally provided with a bifurcated extension 49 adapted also to straddle bar 12 and on the depression of treadle 41 engage with the forwardlypresented ends of cam-extension 4-6 and thereby increase and quicken the cam-wise depressing pull of cam-member 45 on bar 12 and its carried parts.
At its upper end cam-member L5 is provided with an upwardly presented lug or ear 50,-in which is threaded an adjustable set-screw or the like 51 adapted, on the de pression of treadle l1 and the rearward actuation of cam-member 4:5 as described, to abut against adownwardly presented lug 52 on casting 9 to limit or regulate the amount of depressive movement of treadle 4-1 and consequently also of bar 12 and its carried parts.
I have found my new machine to be most easy and positive of operation and most efficient in use, the pressure exerted by the iron being so powerful as to quickly and neatly press the heaviest garment or fabric made.
I am aware that changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination. of the several parts of my new machine may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a pressing-machine of the kind stated, the combination with a table, of means adapted to carry a sad-iron mounted on said table, said means including an elongated headed bar slidably movable relatively to said table, means for yieldingly holding said carrying-means in normal position relatively to said table, a cam-member pivotally mounted on said table and slidably engaging with the head of said bar, a treadle pivotally mounted on said table. and a cam-extension on said treadle adapted to cooperate with said cam-member on the depression of said treadle to slidably actuate said carrving-means against the tension of said holding-means into operative pressing position relativelv to said table; substantially as described.
2. In a pressing-machine of the kind stated, the combination with a table, of an elongated vertically-disposed headed bar slidably mounted on said table, a sad-iron carrying-member mounted on, and movable with, said bar, resilient means interposed between said member and said table adapted to yieldingly hold said member and said bar in normal position relatively to said table, a cam-member pivotally mounted on said table and slidably engaging with the head of said bar, a treadle pivotally mounted on said table, and a cam-extension on said treadle adapted to cooperate with said cammember on the depression of said treadle to slidably actuate said bar and its carried member against the tension of said resilient means into operative pressing position relatively to said table; substantially as described.
3. In a pressing-machine of the kind stated, the combination with a table, of means adapted to carry a sad-iron mounted on said table, said means including an elongated headed bar slidably movable relatively to said table, means for yieldingly holding said carrying-means in normal position relatively to said table, a cam'member pivotally mounted on said table and slidably engaging with the head of said bar, a treadle pivotally mounted on said table and adapted to cooperate with said cam-member on the depression of said treadle to slidably actuate said carrying-means against the tension of said holding means into operative pressing position relatively to said table, and an auxiliary cam-engaging member carried by said. treadle adapted to increase the actuating pressure on said cam-member on the depression of said treadle; substantially as described.

In a pressing-machine of the kind stated, the combination with a table, of means adapted to carry a sad-iron mounted on said table, said means including an elongated bar slidably movable relatively to said table, means for yieldingly holding said carrying means in normal position relatively to said table, a cam-member having engagement with said bar, and means adapted to cooperate with said cam'member to slidably actuate said carrying-means against the tension of said holding-means into operative pressing position relatively to said table, said lastnamed means including a treadle pivotally mounted on said table and a rod at one end pivotally connected to said treadle and at its other end engaging with said cam-member; substantially as described.

In a pressing-machine of the kind stated, the combination with a table, of means adapted to carry a sad-iron mounted on said table, said means including an elongated headed bar slidably removable relatively to said table, means for yieldingly holding said carrying-means in normal position relatively to said table, a cam-member pivotally mounted on said table and slidably engaging with the head of said bar, a treadle pivotally mounted on said table, and means adapted to cooperate with said cammember on the depression of said treadle to slidably actuate said carrying-means against the tension of said holding-means into operative pressing position relatively to said holding-means, said coiiperating means including a cam-extension on said treadle and a rod pivotally connected at one end to said treadle; substantially as described.

In a pressing-machine of the kind stated, the combination with a table, of an elongated vertically-disposed headed bar slidably mounted on said table, a sad-iron carrying-member mounted on, and movable with, said bar, resilient means interposed between said member and said table adapted to yieldingly hold said member and said bar in normal positionrelatively to said table; a cam-member pivotally mounted on said table and slidably engaging With the head of said bar, a treadle pivotally mounted on said table, a cam-extension on said treadle adapted to cooperate With said cammember on the depression of said treadle' to slid-ably actuate said bar and its carried member against the tension of said resilient means into operative pressing position relatively to said table, and a rod adapted to increase the actuating pressure on said cam-member, said rod engaging at one end With said cammember and at its other end having pivotal connection with said treadle; substantially as described.
7. In a pressing-machine of the kind stated, the combination With a table, of
waste against the tension of said holding-means into operative pressing position relatively to said table, a lug on the table and a member carried by said cam-member adapted to engage With said lug to limit the pivotal movement of said cam-member; substantially as described. v
