WATER-GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1915.
Application led August. 19, 1914. Serial No. 857,587.
`and State of Ohio, have invented certain ."'new and useful Improvements in Water- Gages, of nhich the following is a specification. reference being had to' the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to gages, and particularly to water gages adapted for use in connection with locomotive or stationary boilers, to indicate the height of the water in the boiler.
fin object' of this invention is the provision oil a water gage, in which the height of the water therein may be seen from either side of the gage, whereby the engineer or fireman of the locomotive may readily tell the height of the water in the boiler from either side of the cab.
A further obiect of this invention is the provision of a Weter gage, the body portion or' which is open on both sides, and the open sides of the body beingl covered by glass, whereby a clear view of the water within the gage may be obtained by looking directly through the gage.
`With these and other. objects in view, my invention consists in the novel eonstrinction, combination. and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in thc acconipanying drawings, in whiclr-` Figure 1 is an elevational view of. my/ini proved water gage; Fig. is a sectional view on the line Q wi). oi Fig, 1; Fig. 3 is a longitndinal sectional riew of the device; Fig. Llis a sectional view'on the line #-4 ot Fig. 3;, VFig. is a perspective view of one of the clamping plates; Fig. (3 .is a perspective view of one of the gaskets: eind Fig. 7 is a perictiv'e View bf the bodyportion of the .ige l ings. the numeral 1 designates the rectangular body portion of the gage which is formed with av central longitudinal chamber open at both sides of the body. The upper and lower walls of the body are provided with threaded openings to receive one and of the. water pipes 4. the other ends wl'iich are ,connected with lthe boiler in the ordinary manner, whereby the height ot the water in the boiler will be shown by the height of the water in the chamber. Formed lieterring more particularly to the drawf` in the side faces of the body are recesses 5 which communicate with the chamber 2, t0I
provide seats for the gaskets against which plates,I of'glass 7 are adapted to rest to close the open sides of the chamber. Arranged 'against the outer face of the glass plates 7 are gaskets S against which clamping members il are disposed to secure the lasses in their position to close the open si es of the chamber. Each oi the clamping members 9 comprises a rectangular plate which is provided with a central longitudinal slot l() therein, the 'not being,r of a width the same as the width oi" the chamber 2 in the body, whereby when the clamping plates are secured in position, it will be seen that a person may look directly through the gagef [Cach oi" the clamping' plates is provided with inwardly directed side ianges 11 and end flanges i2 which are adapted to engage against the side faces of the body at its edges, the side [langes 11 being provided with offset wings 13 at their extremities to engage the side'edges oi the body to pre vent lateral movement oilv the clamping plates with relation to,the body. Formed in the body on oppositesides oi' the chaniber are tra nsverscly extenifling openings 1.4, and formed in the clamping plates on oppo- 'site sides of the walls l0 are similar openings l5 which are in transverse alinenient with the openings ll, the alined oiienings being adapted to receive therethrough elan'iping bolts 1G by means of which the clamping plaies may be securely elainped to the body to hold the ,glass plates 7 against the open sides oil the body to provide'tight joints between the body and the glass plates. Extendingl inwardly from the side and end iianecs of the clampingr plates are lugs 17 which engage ihe side and und edges of the glass plates T and the onter gaskets 8, to hold thc glass plates and the outer gaskets in their positions to close the open sides of the body. The recesses 5 in the body provide seats to receive the inner gaskets G, whereby the saine are prevented from slipping on the body and the lugs 1T on the clamping plates, when the same 'are eonnec-,ted to the body, extend ini'ardly so that their extremities terminate iiush with the outer walls of the recesses 5 whereby the glass plates and the gaskets 6 and 8 are held in such position that the edges thereof are flush with each other.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it
Will be seen that I have provided a Water gage, in Which the' parts thereof may be quickly connected together or detached from the same by reason of the glass plates clos-v ing the open sides of the body, a clearer view of the Water therein is obtained than otherwise possible, .as were the gage open on one side only as in the usual construction of gages.`
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters'Patent is:-
A water gage comprising a body member formedwith a longitudinal chamber therein, open at both sides, shoulders formed Within the body and extending entirely around the openings at both sides of the body, gaskets arranged upon said shoulders so that the outer faces of the gaskets Will be disposed flush with the side faces of the body, glass plates arranged against the gaskets to close the open sides of the chamber, gaskets disposed upon v the outer faces of said glass plates, clamping plates arranged against the second set of gaskets and having longitudinal slots formed therein in alinement with'said chamber, bolts extending through the clamping plates an .through the body whereby to rigidly secure 'the clamping plates to the" body, said body 'having openings formed in each end thereof -and communicating With the chamber `whereby to provide therein communication through the chamber, said their relative positions to close the open sides of the body.
In testimony whereof l hereunto aiix my signature in the presignce of two Witnesses. WILLAM RILEY.
