CLAMPING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 16, 1915.-
Application filed November 2, 1914. Serial No. 868,832.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORIS K. DUNBAR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Centerville, in the county of lVayne and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Clamping Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and comprehensible description, being such as will enable others to make and use the same. I
The object of this invention, briefly stated, is to provide a clamping device adapted to connect together a plurality of timbers, or the like two of which at least are located at right-angles to each other, whereby the intersecting parts will be securely locked together in a strong and durable manner. A more specific object is to provide a clamping device for securing together the intersecting parts of timbers or they like, having means whereby the device may be employed with timbers of various sizes, that is as to their widths and thicknesses, the device being adjustable to accommodate itself to the same within reasonable limits. And, finally, my object is to provide distinct improvements over the invention shown in my former Patent No; 1,097,011, dated May 19, 1914, and this invention may be used for the same purpose.
The preferred means for carrying out my invention in apractical manner is shown in the accompanying drawings, in wl1ich+ Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in operative position, showing the two upper timbers secured thereby as of the I same thickness with relation to each other. Fig. :2 is a plan view of the same, showing the central timber as of greater thickness than the upper timber. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, showing the upper timber as of greater thickness than the central timber. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my invention as it would appear assembled but without the timbers to be clamped. And Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the two identical members of my clamping device alone.

The device proper consists of two metal members which are identicalwith each other in every particular, each being formed as that shown in Fig. 5. And as the two members are alike I will denote the various parts of one by numerals, and will simply denote the corresponding parts of the other by like numerals with exponents. Each member consists of a flat body portion 1, l, and a right-angles to each other, with one corner only of the body connected directly to one corner of the head portion, both portions being disposed vertically. lntegrally connecting the upper end of the body portion with the lower end of the head portion is the triangular portion 3, 3. Extending out from the lower end of the body portion, at right-angles thereto, is the foot 4, 1, each having a bolt aperture thereto to receive the bolts 5, 5. Formed through the-body portion 1, 1, above the vertical center and to one side of the horizontal center thereof, is the slot 6, 6; also formed through the head portion 2, 2, to one side of the horizontal center thereof, is the slot 7, 7. The members formed as set forth are to be arranged in pairs, as shown in Fig. i. The bodies of the two members are adapted to be connected by a bolt 8 passing through the slots 6 and 6; and the two heads are adapted to be passing through the connected by the bolt 9 slots 7 and 7'. From the above it will be seen that the.
bodies of the two members are adjustable laterally with relation to each other, and the heads of the two members are adjustable laterally with relation to each other, the adjustrnent of the bodies being at right-angles to the adjustment of the heads. 1
Letters A, B and C denote the three timbers to be. clamped together by my invenpasses through the timber 0, thereby re-- taining the parts in position. In Fig. 1 the timbers B and C are of the same thickness; in Fig. 2 the timber B is of greater thickness than the timber C; and in Fig. 3 the timber C' is of greater thickness than is timber B. The slots 66 and 77' permit said adjustments to be made within the limits of the horizontal lengths of the said slots.
The device will, of course, permit the timberA'to be of any desired width or thickflat head portion 2, 2, which are turned at I 9O tio'n. As shown in Flg. 1 the feet 44 are ness, requiring only difierent lengths of bolts 5-5.
The timber B may be made of any width (vertically) greater than that shown by simply employing longer bolts 5-5, with the feet li spaced away from the timber A, as shown in Fig. 1 of my former patent above mentioned; or a channel may be cut across in the upper face of the timber A for the timber B to rest in; or the under edge of the timber B may be cut away where it crosses the timber A. It is also evident that the timber C may be of any width (vertically) as desired.
Having now fully shown and described my invention, what I claim and desire.to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A clamping device comprising two clamping members each having a fiat vertical body, a flat vertical head portion, the body and the head being turned at rightangles to each other, and a triangular portion oining the body and the head portions, there also being a horizontal slot formed in both the body and the head portions, and a foot extending out horizontally from the lower end of the body portion, all substantially as shown and described.
2. A clamping device comprising two clamping members each having a fiat vertical body, a fiat vertical head portion, the body and the head being disposed at right angles to each other, a triangular portion connecting the body and the head portions, there being horizontal slots formed through both the body and the head portions, and a foot extending out horizontally from the lower end of the body portion; a bolt adapted to pass through the registering slots of the two body portions, a bolt adapted to pass through the registering slots of the head portions, and bolts adapted to pass through said feet, all substantially as shown and described.
3. A clamping device comprising a pair of members each having a quarter twist and adapted toengage on opposite sides of two timbers which cross each other, means for securing the two members to said timbers, the members being adapted to be adjusted to timbers of various thicknesses, and means for securing a third timber to the lower end of the clamp members, substantially as set forth.
.4, A, clamping device comprising a pair of clamping members which are identical with each other, each having a flat body portion and a head portion. whose faces are in vertical alinement with each other, there being horizontal slots formed through the body and the head, bolts disposed through said slots in each portion of the clamping members whereby timbers of various thicknesses may be secured between the body of the two members and between the heads of the two members, and means for securing the lower ends of the two members to a third timber, all substantially as set forth.
A clamping device comprising a pair of members which are identical with each other, each having a flat body portion with a slot formed across its shorted dimension, a Hat head portion having a slot therethrough, the body and the head being turned at rightangles to each other, a triangular portion integrally uniting the lower end of the head portion to the upper end of the body por tion, and a foot extending out from the lower end of the body portion, there being a bolt aperture formed through said foot, all substantially as described.
