T allwhomz'tmay concern:v Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MoADAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Williamson and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burners, of which the following is a specification. I
The invention relates to hydro-carbon burners, and more particularly to the class of fuel Vaporizers for use in stoves, furnaces, or the like.

between the rate'csr partitioiis18and 19f n di e e lit and concentric to the open center 17 of the head 16 are air passages 20 which open through the top and bottom of the head, the partitions 18 and 19 being vertically arranged within the head, while formed within the column 15 are horizontally disposed baflie plates or partitions 21 which are arranged in spaced relation to each other and are provided with openings 22 disposed in staggered relation to-each other so as to deflect the course of the fluid when rising therein, which is supplied thereto through the feed pipe 12, and these baiile plates or partitions 21 with the openings arranged therein also serve to retard the flow of gas which otherwise would exert pressure upon the oil causing back pressure thereof. lmmediately below the lowermost partition or baflie plate 22 in the column 15 is a reticulated valve cage 23, the top of which is closed by the said lowermost partition, and it rises centrally from a partition 24 formed with a valve seat 25 against which normally rests a spherical valve 26 which works within the cage 23, and this valve is adapted to open under the pressure of the fuel supplied from the feed pipe 12, and on the seating of the said valve 26 the supply is automatically cut off, as will be apparent.
Fixed within the open center 17 of the head 16 is a mixing tube 27, which is formed with a flared lower end 28 and a perforated upper end 29, the latter being covered through the medium of a flame spreader 30, while below the flared end 28 of the mixing tube 27 is a gas nozzle 31 having an inlet tube 32 which is tapped into a valve casing 33, the valves of which are operated by means of valve rods 34 and 35, respectively, which extend downwardly through the base 10, and between these valves within the casing 33 and tapped within the latter is a vertical delivery pipe 36 which is tapped within a depending hollow boss 37 formed on the head 16 at the bottom thereof so that gas from the said head will be supplied to the gas nozzle on the opening of the valve next to the same, the rods 34 and 35 being operated in a manner presently described.
Arranged concentrically about the nozzle 31 is an air inlet ring 38 which is formed with an annular oil receiving groove or channel 39, at the upper edge thereof, to receive oil to be lighted, so as to serve as a torch for pre-heating the head 16 for the 'vaporizing of the oil therein prior to the lighting of the burner, whereby the oil will be converted into gas to be consumed at the burner.
Formed on the head 16 at the top thereof and extended about the periphery and beneath the bottom of the same are radial ribs 40 which form a support for the flame spreader 30, which is separate from the mixing tube 27. -The ribs 40 also serve to admit air to the flame spreader 30 and about the mixing tube during the working of the device.
Tapped in the valve casing 33 on the side opposite the nozzle 31 connected therewith is a gas delivery pipe 41 which is provided with an elbow 42 and a short pipe 43, the latter being tapped into a casing 44 constructed correspondingly to the casing 16 and below which is arranged the gas nozzle 45 and torch ring 46, the same being identical in construction to the nozzle 31 and ring 38, the said nozzle 45 being supplied with gas through the inlet pipes 46 and 47, the same being tapped into a union 48 for joining them, the pipe 47 leading from the head 44.
Working within each of the nozzles 31 and 45 is a needle valve operating rod 49 which extends downwardly through a hollow post 50 supporting the said nozzle, and mounted upon the base 10, while below the latter and loosely mounted upon the said rod 49 is a bracket 51 forming a bearing for a worm screw 52, the latter meshing with a worm gear 53 fixed to the shaft 49, the worm screw 52 being connected with the part 54 of an extensible operating rod 55, another part of which carries a hand wheel 56 so that it can be manually turned for working the needle valve rod 49. The bracket 51 permits the shifting of the rod 55 about the rod 49 so that it can be conveniently positioned for manipulation by the user of the device, because on the application of the device as shown in Fig. 1, the rod 55 is arranged in one position, while on the application of the device in the stove shown in Fig. 3 the rod 55 will have to be positioned at a different angle from the position there of as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The valve rod 35 controls the valve within the casing 33 to regulate the supply of gas through the pipe 41 to the nozzle 45, as will be apparent, and this valve rod 35, together with the valve rod 34, is operated in a manner similar to the rod 49 controlling the needle valve of the nozzles 31 and 45, respectively.
In Fig. 3 there is shown a slight modification in the application of the device, where in B designates the fire pot of an ordinary coal stove, in which is mounted the base 10 of the device, the latter, in this instance, being constructed identically as hereinbefore described.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. In a burner, a casing forming a vaporizing chamber, a column depending from said casing, means for supplying oil to said column, a mixing tube arranged centrally of the said casing, a discharge nozzle below said tube and having communication with said chamber, means for forming a torch concentrically about the discharge nozzle, bafile plates arranged within the said chamber, and baflle plates arranged within the column.
2. In a burner, a casing forming a vaporizing chamber, a column depending from said casing, means for supplying oil to said column, a mixing tube arranged centrally of the said casing, a discharge nozzle below said tube and having communication with said chamber, means for forming a torch concentrically about the discharge nozzle, bafiie plates arranged within the said chamber, baifle plates arranged within the column, and means for regulating the discharge of fluid from the said nozzle.
3. In a burner, a casing forming a vaporizing chamber, a column depending from said casing, means for supplying oil to said column, a mixing tube arranged centrally of the said casing, a discharge nozzle below said tube and having communication with said chamber, means for forming a torch concentrically about the discharge nozzle, bafiie plates arranged within the said chamber, bafiie plates arranged within the column, means for regulating the discharge of fluid from the said nozzle, and means for regulating the delivery of fluid from the chamber to the said nozzle.

In a burner, a casing forming a vaporizing chamber, a column depending from said casing, means for supplying oil to said column, a mixing tube arranged centrally of the said casing, a discharge nozzle below said tube and having communication with said chamber, means for forming a torch concentrically about the discharge nozzle, baffle plates arranged within the said chamber, baffle plates arranged within the column, means for regulating the discharge of fluid from the said nozzle, means for regulating the delivery of fluid from the chamber to the said nozzle, and a support for the nozzle and easing.
5. In a burner, a casing forming a vaporizing chamber, a column depending from said casing, means for supplying oil to said column, a mixing tube arranged centrally of the said casing, a discharge nozzle below said tube and having communication with said chamber, means for forming a torch concentrically about the discharge nozzle, baffle plates arranged within the said chamber, baflle plates arranged within the column,
means for regulating the discharge of fluid from the said nozzle, and adjustable means for regulating the delivery of fluid from the chamber to the said nozzle.

In a burner, a casing forming a vaporizing chamber, a column depending from the said casing, means for supplying oil to said column, a mixing tube arranged centrally of the said casing, a discharge nozzle below said tube and having communication with said chamber, means for forming a torch concentrically about the discharge nozzle, baflie plates arranged within the'said cham ber, baffle plates arranged within the column, adjustable means for regulating the dis charge of fluid from the said nozzle, and adjustable' means for regulating the delivery of fluid from the chamber to the said nozzle.
7. In a burner, a vaporizer, a mixing tube arranged centrally of said vaporizer, a flame spreader above the mixing tube and supported by the vaporizer, means for discharging fuel into the mixing tube and having communication with the vaporizer, ba'lfle plates arranged within the vaporizer radially'with respect to the mixing tube, and a preheating column depending from the vaporizer and having baffle plates arranged therein.
8. In a burner, a vaporizer, a mixing tube arranged centrally of said vaporizer, a flame spreader above the mixing tube and supported by the vaporizer, means for discharging fuel into the mixing tube and having communication with the vaporizer, baffle and having baffle plates arranged therein,-
and means for supplying oil to the column.
9. In a burner, a vaporizer, a mixing tube arranged centrally of said vaporizer, a flame spreader above the mixing tube and supported by the vaporizer, means for discharging fuel into the mixing tube and having communication with the vaporizer, baiile plates arranged within the vaporizer radially with respect to the mixing tube, a preheating column depending from the vaporizer and having baflie plates arranged therein, means for supplying oil to the column, and means concentrically about the fuel discharge means to effect a torch.
