This invention relates to certain new and useful improvtanents in vending machines. The object of my invention i" to provide a new and improved vending machine which is simple in construction. and operation. reliable in action and. is particularly adapted for vending articles of irregular hape. for example in the shape of cylinders with rounded. or dome shaped ends as distin guished from rectangular packages such as chocolate and like confections.

After the glass cylinder has been placed upon the circular frame 10, the articles to be sold as represented b 35, are poured in through the open top 0 the glass cylinder and then the rod 31 on thecover 30 is forced down through these articles until the cover rests upon the top of the glass cylinder. The turn table is provided with a square opening 36 from which a hollow squared shaft 37 projects downward and the rod 31 on the cover passes through said hollow squared shaft and projects below the lower end of the same. A latch 38 having a lateral notch 39 is pivoted on a projection 40 extending downward from the underside of the top of the base and after the rod 31 has been inserted in the manner described, the latch 38 is shifted so as to cause it to engage the groove 33 in the lower end of the rod 31 whereby the rod, the cover and the glass receptacle are locked together. The base is provided .with an opening 41 which is normally closed by a locked door 42 and when this door is removed the latch 38 can be disengaged from the lower end of the rod 31. By merely disengaging the latch, the rod 81 is unlocked and it, with the cover 30, can be removed, the glass vessel can be removed, the turn table can be lifted off and all the parts thoroughly cleaned and wiped. The squared hollow shaft 37 extends loosely the This spring gradually through a neck 43 projecting downward from the top of the base and the lower end of this squared hollow shaft passes into a' squared central aperture of a hub 44 and on said hub 44 there are fixed two ratchet wheels 45 and 46. A hook shaped pawl lever :17 is pivotally mounted on the lower end of a boss 48 projecting downward from the top of the base and carries a pawl tooth 49 which can enter between two teeth of the ratchet wheels 45 and 46 and beyond this tooth a curved arm 50 extending partially around the hub is formed. The teeth of the ratchet wheel 46 project some distance be yond the teeth of the ratchet wheel 45. A spring 51 surrounds the boss 48 and bears on the pawl lever 47 to throw it toward the hub 44.
A lever 52 is pivoted at 53 to a boss 54 on the underside of the to of the base and the opposite end of this lever projects through a slot 55 formed above the upper edge of the door 42. This lever has a curved part 56 for the accommodation of the cen tral boss of the base and the hub 44. On the top of this lever 52 a coin guide 57 is formed between two sheet metal walls and a coin can be inserted in the open front end of this coin guide through a coin slot 58 in one of the walls of the base. A coin pocket 59 is formed on the underside of the lever 52 and is slotted at the bottom as at 60. Directly below the bottom of the coin pocket 59 a lever 61 is provided which has its inner forked end 161 mounted to turn in an an nular groove in the lower part of the hub 14 and this lever is provided with a hole 63 through which a pin 61 from the lever 52 passes so that the lever 61 is compelled to swing withlthe lever 52. Vhen the lever 52 is in normal position, the lever 61 is below the bottom slot 60 of the coin pocket 59 and prevents the coin from dropping but when the lever 52 is forced to the left, it moves a greater distance than the central part of the lever 61 with the result that the slotted bottom of the coin pocket 59 is passed beyond the edge of he bottom lever 61 and the coin can drop. '1 he lower lever 61 is provided with a curved shield so which projects above and below the slot formed above the door 42 so to prevent the insertion of wires and so forth. This shield has a notch 66 in its top edge through which the lever 52 projects. A shield 67 is also formed on the coin pocket 57 to prevent in serting wires. A spring acts on the lever '52 to hold it normally at one end of the slot 55. Achute 156 for the articles delivered communicates at its upper end with the outlet opening 6 in the top of the base and, at. the lower end of said chute a side opening 157 is formed in the base for removing the article delivered.
For the purpose of closing the underside of the base, the base has a bottom plate 160 provided with an upw ardl projecting apertured lug 261 which can e fitted on a pin 162 projecting from the inside of one wall of the base near the bottom. Directly opposite there is forked or slotted L-shaped lug 1633 which can engage a pin 164 projecting from the inside of one of the walls of the base. latch lever 165 pivoted to the upper surface of the bottom plate 160 of the bar. can we swung under the prongs of the lug 163 and over the pin 164 when the bottom plate is in position while the door 42 is open. After the bottom plate has thus i' l'fiil ioclicii in place the door is inserted and locked by IEWPLUIS of a lock of any desired coustriwtion. A money drawer 166 is preferably formed on or secured to the inner surface of the door.
The articles to be vended and which are contained in the receptacle are substantially of a cylindrical form with dome shaped ends and it is for articles of this shape that the present machine is particularly adapted. They rest upon the turn table and in the openings of the same and in the groove beneath the openings. As these openings are enlarged downward, they prevent jamming of the articles and permit the articles to drop readily through the outlet opening. No diiiiculty whatever is experienced if the articles rest with their longer sides on the bottom of the groove 4, but it frequently occurs that they drop into the openings and rest upon the groove 4 on end and when in such position, they strike the inner edge of the flat thin spring plate 19 and force the same upward, more or less, which is possible as one end of this plate is mounted to slide and the wider end is shaped as a spring tongue. the articles are held between the edge of this plate and the edge of one of the openings in the turn table, they cannot drop through the outlet opening and when they arrive at the wider end of the spring plate, they are snapped upward into the pile of articles in the receptacle to be again carried around. lf the spring plate 19 would not be made yielding or of such thickness that it could bond, the article, such as chewing gum and the like would be cut, broken or i'nutilated, all of which is now avoided by the construction described and this spring plate in connection with the openings in the turn table as described, assures a prompt delivery of such articles, like pieces of chewing gum to the outlet opening in the base. The raised portion of the circular fran'ie surrounding the turn table prevents bridging of the pieces of chewing gum and the inner inclined sides of this raised portion tends to guide the articles toward the outlet opening. The bevel on one end of this raised portion prevents jamming and locking of the articles and also assists in preventing bridging. The beveled shoulder near the opposite end of the raised portion permits the article, such as pieces of chewing gum, to slide readily one upon the other and likewise prevents jamming and bridging as the shoulder is beveled and also inclined from the lower to the upper edge of the raised portion. The shallow groove in the upper surface of the turn table and in which shallow groove the openings in the turn table are formed, serves to guide the articles, such as pieces of chewing gum. to said openings in the turn table and thus serves to insure the carrying around of the articles to the outlet opening in the base.
hen a coin is inserted through the slot 58 it passes into the pocket 57 and from the same into the pocket 5 and the edge of the coin rests upon the lever 61 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 7. One side face oi the coin now rests against the free end of the arm 50 of the pawl lever 47 and as the lever 52 is moved in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 6, the coin acting on the end of the curved arm 50 of the coin lever 47 disengagcs the pawl tooth 49 from the ratchet teeth of the ratchet wheels -15 and all) so as to permit rotation of the same and as the movement of the lever in the direction of the arrow Fig. (3 continues. part of the coin projecting between the teeth of the wheel 46 acts upon the same thereby turning the hub 44. a distance of one tooth whereby the turn table is turned the distance of one tooth. The coin then drops in the manner previously described and the parts spring back to normal position. The ratchet wheels 45 and 46 are provided to permit of engagement with the pawl tooth and so that the end of the curved arm 50 will hold the coins securely during i'nanipulation.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In an automatic vending machine, the combination with a receptacle for the articles to be vended, of a horizontally mounted turn table in the bottom of the same. which turn table has a s allow annular groove at its rim and a circuiar row of apertures extending through the turn table and formed in said shallow groove, and mechanism for turning said turn table step by step, substantially as set forth.
2. In an automatic vending macl'iine, the combination with a receptacle for the articles to be vended, of a horizontally mountcd turn table in the bottom of the same, which turn table has a shallow annular groove at its rim and a. circular row of apertures extending through the turn table and formed in said shallow groove, said apertures increasing in diameter from the upper surface to the lower surface of the turn table and mechanism for turning said turn table step by step, substantially as set forth.
3. In an automatic vending machine, the combination with a receptacle for the articles to be vended, of a circular horizontally mounted turn table in the bottom of the same, which turn table has an annular row of openings at its rim and a fixed plate beneath the turn table, which fixed plate has an annular groove in its upper s rface at its rim beneath said apertures in t" 'w :n table, and mechanism for turning i turn table step by step, substantially asset forth.

In an automatic vending machine, the combination with a receptacle for the goods to be vended, of a horizontal turn table mounted in the bottom of said vessel, the said turn table being provided in its upper surface with a shallow groove and a circular row of apertures in said groove, a circular frame surrounding the turn table and having a part projecting above the upper exposed surface of said turn table, the said raised part lapping over the rim part of said turn table and mechanism for turning said turn table step by step, substantially as set forth.
6. In an automatic vending machine, the combination with a receptacle for the goods to be vended, of a horizontal apertured turn table in the bottom of the. same, a circular frame surrounding the turn table and having a part raised above thd turn table, this raised part overlapping the rim part of the turn table and being nclined upward and inward on its inner ace and mechanism for turning said turv table step by step, substantially as set forth.
V In anautomatic vending machine, the combination with a receptacle for the goods to be vended, of a horizontal apertured turn table in the bottom of the same, a circular frame surrounding the turn table and having a part raised above. the turn table, this raised part overlapping the rim part of the turn table and being inclined inward on its inner surface and having a bevel from its inner to its outer surface at one end, and mechanism for turning said turn table step by step, substantially as set forth.
8. In an automatic vending machine, the combination with a receptacle for theigoods to be vended, of a horizontal apertured turn table in the bottom of the same, a circular frame surrounding the turn table and having a part raised above the turn table, this raised part overlapping the rim part of the turn table and having a beveled shoulder on its inner surface extending from top to bottom of the raised portion near one end and mechanism for turning said turn table step by step, substantially as set "forth.
9. In an automatic vending machine, the combination with a base. having an annular groove in its top, of a receptacle for the goods to be vended, on said base, a horizontally mounted turn table mounted to rotate above said groove and having a shallow annular groove in its upper surface along the rim, an annular row of apertures formed in the turn table at the rim, the diameter of these apertures increasing from the upper surface to the lower of the turn table, a circular frame surrounding the turn table, a flat spring plate on the edge of the frame overlapping the turn table and a raised portion of said circular frame overlapping an edge part of the turn table, said raised portion increasing in thickness inward from the top of the turn table to the top edge ofithe raised portion on the inner side and having one end beveled from top to bottom from its inner to its outer surface and mechanism for turning said turn table step by step, substantially as set forth.
25. In an automatic vending machine, the combination with a base having an annular groove in its top, of a receptacle for the goods to be vended, on said base, a horizontally mounted turn table mounted to rotatc above said groove and having a shallow annular groove in its upper surface along the rim, an annular row of apertures formed in the turn table at the rim, the diameter of these apertures increasing from the upper surface to the lower of the turn table, a circular frame surrounding the turn table, a flat spring plate on the edge of the frame overlapping the turn table, and a. raised portion of said circular frame overlapping an edge part of the turn table, said raised portion increasing in thickness inward from the top of the turn table to the top edge of the raised portion onthe inner side and said raised portion having one end beveled from the top edge to the bottom edge from its inner to its outer surface and having an internal shoulder extending from the top of the raised portion to the top of the turn table near the opposite end of said raised portion and mechanism for turning said turn table step by step, substantially as set forth.
26. In an automatic vending machine, the combination with a base, of a receptacle for the goods to be vended, upon said base, an opening in the top of the base within the confines of the receptacle, a horizontally mounted turn table in the bottom of the receptacle, which turn table is provided with an annular row of openings near its rim,
mechanism for turning said turn table step by step and a circular frame within the receptacle and surrounding the turntable, a flat spring plate on the rim of-the circular .frame and projecting over part of the tur table, substantially as set forth.

In an automatic vending machine, the combination with a base, of a receptacle for the goods to be vended, upon said base, an opening in the top of the base within the confines of the receptacle, a horizontally mounted turn table in the bottom of the receptacle, which turn table is provided with an annular row of openings near its rim, mechanism for rotating said turn table step by step and a circular frame within the receptacle and surrounding the turn table, a flat spring plate on the rim of the circular frame and projecting over part of the turn table, a raised portion of said circular frame overlapping an edge part of the turn table, substantially as set forth.

In an automatic vending machine, the combination with a base, of a receptacle for the goods to be vended, upon said base, an opening in the top of the base within the confines of the receptacle, .a horizontally mounted turn table in the bottom of the receptacle, which turn table is provided with an annular row of openings near its rim, mechanism for rotating said turn table step by step and a circular frame within the re-- ceptacle and surrounding the turn table, a flat spring plate on the rim of the circular frame and projecting over part of the turn table, a raised portion of said circular frame overlapping an edge part of the turn table, one end of said raised portion being beveled from its inner to its outer surface from top to bottom, substantially as set forth.

In an automatic vending machine, the combination with a base, of a receptacle for the goods to be vended, upon said base, an opening in the top of the base within the confines of the receptacle, a horizontally mounted turn table in the bottom of the receptacle, which turn table is provided with an annular row of openings near its rim, mechanism for rotating said turn table step by step and a circular frame within the receptacle and surrounding the turn table, a
flat spring plate on the rim of the circular frame and projecting over part of the turn table, a raised portion of said circular frame formed adjacent to the other end of the raised portion, substantially as set forth.
30. In an automatic vending machine, thecombination with a base, of a receptacle upon the same, said base having an outlet opening in its top within the confines of said receptacle, an adjustable cover for said re- .combination with a base, 0
ceptacle, a rod projecting downward from said cover, a latch in the base for engaging the lower end of said rod, a horizontally mounted turn table in the bottom of the receptacle, through which turn table the rod passes and mechanism for turning said turn table step by step, substantially as set forth.

In an automatic vendin machine, the combination with a base, of a. receptacle upon the same, said base having an outlet opening in its top within the confines of said receptacle, an adjustable cover for said receptacle, a rod projecting downward from said cover, the lower end of said rod being beveled, a latch in the base for engaging the lower end of said rod, a horizontally mounted turn table in the bottom of the receptacle, through which turn table the rod passes and mechanism for turning said turn table step by step, substantially as set forth.

combination with a base, of a circular frame on the same, a detachable cylindrical recep tacle fitting around said circular frame, a horizontally -mounted turn table mounted on the base and provided with an annular row of apertures, an outlet aperture in tin base below said turn table, mechanism for rotating the turn table step by step, a dc tachable cover for said receptacle, a rod projecting downward from said cover, and ex tending loosely through the turn table, and a latch in the base for engaging the lower end of said rod, substantially as set forth.
34. In an automatic vending machine, the combination with a base, of a receptacle on the same for the goods to be vended, an apertured horizontally mounted turn table in the bottom of the receptacle, an outlet opening in the base beneath said. turn table, a circular frame surrounding the turn table, part of said frame being higher than the turn table, a flat spring plate held on the upper edge of said frame at that portion of e frame opposite the one having the raised part and mechanism for moving the turn table step by step, substantially as set forth. 35. In an automatic vending machine, the combination with a base, of receptacle upon the same for the goods to be vended, an
apertured'horizontally mounted turn table mounted in the bottom of the receptacle,-
mechanism for turning said turn table step by step, the base having an outlet aperture beneath the apertures of the turn table, a frame surrounding the turn table within the receptacle, a flat spring plate on the frame and overlapping part of the turn table, said frame also extending over the outlet aperture'of the base, substantially as set forth.

the receptacle, a flat spring plate on the frame and overlapping'part of the turn table, said spring plate also extending over the outlet aperture of the base, one end of said spring plate being secured on the top edge of the circular frame and the other being slidably mounted on said top edge, the secured end being'wider than the sliding end and the wider end having a notch t form a spring tongue at the inner free edge of said plate, substantially as set forth.
