Description

` E. ADLER. v SAFETY BEAM GRIP. v
' APPLICATION FILED JULY 1a. 1914. 1,128,277, Palaented Feb.16, 1915.

ELI ADLER, 0I? BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
SAFETY BEAM-emr.
To all-whom 'it'may concern.- c
Be it known that I, ELI ADLER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements, in Safety Beam-Grips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a safety grip which is more particularly designed for lifting beams such as steel' I-beams used in the construction of buildings, bridges, &c. The devices heretofore used for gr1p ing or fastening such beams to the tackle o a hoisting apparatus have not been entirely' satisfactoryon account of the insecure:hold obtained by such devices on the beams which frequently resu ed in releasing the same and endangering li e and property.
It is the object of thls invention to rovide a safety. grip which can be produce at low cost, which can be easily and quickly ap-" plied to and removed from the beam'and" whereby beams and the like may be securely grasped and connected with the hoisting.
tackle without liability of slippage of the Abeam and possible dropping of the -same while being hoisted or transported from one place or another.
In the accompanying drawings: is a side elevation of a safety beam grip constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the same detached from the beam. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same attached to a beam. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the gri applied to a beam. Fig. 4 is a horizonta section taken in line Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My-improved safety beam grip preferably comprises two upright levers 1, 1 which cross each other andare connected by a horizontal transverse pivot or bolt 2 so `that these levers are capable of swinging in a vertical plane relatively to each other. -The upper arms of these two leversvv may be connected with the tackle of a hoisting apparatus in any suitable manner so that an upward pull uponthese upper arms causes the samevto move toward each other and the lower arms thereof to also move toward .each other forA gripping thebeam which is to be lifted or transported. As shown in the drawings, the means for thus drawing the upper arms of the levers together comprise two chains or specification of Letters ratent.

is provided with an upper downwardly facing gripping jaw. 5 which is preferably beveled or inclined so that the faces of the upper gripping jawsof both levers diverge downwardly 1n the operative position 4of these levers, as shown 1n Fig. 2. These upper grlpping jaws of the levers are adapted to engage wlththe upper side of the upper anges 6 ofan I-beam at the upper outer corners of these anges when a beam, as'v shown in Fig.'2.
.pivotally connected at its upper end .by means of a horiiontal transverse' piv'ot bolt 8,'I or other suitable means, with the lower arm of one of the levers above the upper jaw thereof. Each ofthese claws is curved or of C-shaped form and extends from its pivotal connection with` the respective lever arm outwardly, downwardly and inwardly relatively to this arm.l On its lower part the claw is provided with alower upwardly enga e with the underside of one of the upperl anges of the I-beam adjacent to the place where this flange is engaged on its upper side by the lower jaw ofthe companion lever, as shown in Fig. 2. Each of these claws is --preferably `provided inv its upper part with a'vertical slot 9-which'` receives the lower arm of the "companion le l ver, thereby providing a balanced support for the claw on lthe lever and causing these parts to be guided one upon the other so that they do not become displaced Ior distorted lwh1le subjected to the Strains of the loadV which is being carried.
When this grip is applied to a'beam Vand the weight of the latter is suspended Aby the grip the inclined upper jaws ofthe levers engage with the opposite uppercorners of the beam with a wedging or pinching action and the lower jaws of the claws engage with the undersides of the upper ianges of the I- beanaas Shown in Fig. 2., wha@ the beam is thus suspended by the grip its weight causes thelower arms of the levers tocongrippinglsuch v 7, 7 represent two claws each' of which is lfacing gripping jaw 10 which-is adapted to-l -stantly tend to approach each other wheref by the inclined jaws ofthe levers are caused to press the upperI danges of the ll-beam with a -wedgingor pinching action-against the lower jaws of the claws. rlhe frictiona'l hold of the several jaws of the grip upon the l-beam is thus increased in proportion to the increased weight of the beam which is b'eing lifted and the latter is securely connectedwith the lifting device.
@wing to the wedge or pinch action of the levers which engage the upper side of the beam and cause the underside of the beam ange's to :be pressed against the lower jaws of the claws, slippage of the beam on the grip while thus engaged is positively pre- \\ented, thereby insuring .absolute safety to the workmen and other nearby persons and also avoiding damage to property as is otherwise inevitable when a beam drops by becoming detached from the hoisting tackle.
ll claim as my invention:
1. A safety beam grip comprising two crossed and pivotally connected levers each of which is provided at its lower end with an up er gripping jaw adapted to engage with t e upper side of a beam, and claws pivoted on the lower ends of said levers and each provided with a lower gripping jaw which is adapted to engage with the underside ot a beam.
medew 2. A safety beam grip comprising two crossed andpivotally connected levers each of which is provided at its lower end with an upper gripping jaw adapted to engage with the upper side of a, beam, and claws which are pivoted on said levers and each of which curves from its pivot outwardly. downwardly and inwardly and is provided at its lower end with a lower gripping jaw iidapted to engage with the underside of the 8. A safety beam grip comprising two crossed and pivotally connected levers each of which is provided at its lower end with an upper inclined gripping jaw ada ted to engage with the upper side of a claws which are pivoted on said levers and each of which is providedl in its upper part with a vertical'slot for the reception of the companion lever-and on its lower part with a lower'jaw for engagement with the undersideof the beam.
