ATENT onnion.
SETT'LING-DRUM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1915.
' Application filed November 22, 1913. Serial No. 802,436.
. the impurities frequently'found within the water.
It is also an object to provide a settling drum with a plurality of blow-outs capable of removing material that has settled in the bottom thereof and floating material or fiuidsof lighter specific gravity than the water. v
It is a further object to provide means for carrying the water into an annular chamher at a lower level than the exit opening of the outlet which is surrounded by an apertured tubular casing.
In the drawings accompanying this specification: Figure 1 is an elevation showing a boiler with connections thereto to preheat the water before its entrance into the settling'drum. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal central section of the settling drum. Fig. 3 is a modification thereof'showing a horizontally disposed settling drum. Figs.
4 and 5 are details of the partition walls,
showing the staggered relation of the apertures, these sections being taken on the lines 44 and 55., respectively.
More specifically in the drawings, 6 designates the exterior cylindrical casing of the preferred form of settling drum having a top closure 7 provided with a plurality of apertures and a conically formed base or bottom 8 having the apex of the cone directeddownward and provided with a threaded orifice within which is inserted the pipe connection 9 provided with'a valve-10.
' Mounted in the apertured top are pipe connections, the first being an inlet pipe 11 a which is carri 3d. through a threaded connection secured to the cover 7, this pipe being carried to a point about mid-way of the device and is separated from the outlet pipe 14 by means of a cylindrical sleeve 15. This sleeve 15 is-provided with a flange 16 at its upper portion by which it is secured to the top and preferably in concentric relation to the outer casing, the opening for the. outin the upper edge,
To provide a circulation for the water' the sleeve 15 has formed therein below the normal level of the water a plurality ofopenings 19 through which the water will circulate as indicated by the arrows.
In the pipes ;11 and 14 suitable check valves 20 and 21* are provided so that the fluid will not be able to flow in a reverse direction from that intended, the pipe 11 being connected to a source of fluid under pressure from the pump 23, the water being preferably carried from the pipe 24 through the preheater 25 mounted in the boiler 26, this preheater being connected to thepipe 11. The pipe 14 delivering the water to'the boiler is carried over in proximity thereto and-its entrance is preferably disposed near the lowest level in the boiler shown at 27.
Suitable valves are interposed in the pipe lines to control the passage of fluid and pro vide for the direct passage into'theboiler a short connection 28 is made between the pump delivery pipe 24 and-the inlet in the boiler 27,
' In the modification shown in Fig. 3 ahorizontally disposed cylindrical drum 30 is shown which is separated into a plurality of chambers by means of circular plates 31, 32 and 33, an inlet pipe 34 connecting with the first of the. chambers being carried to a central'position therein where the liquid is allowed to pass from this entrance chamber to the next succeeding inclosed bythe plates 31 and'32 through an opening 35 in the upper portion of the plate 31. The plate 32 has an opening in its lower edge and the plate 33 the latter being'located or forming a chamber within which the outlet 38 is connected. A plurality of blow- outs 39, 40 and 41 are provided, the one 40 accommodating the lower portion of two chambers.
The operation of the device will be readily understood from the description and. the drawing. Water being under pressure in the pump 23 carried into the settling drum g amazes where heavy particles will gravitate to the lower portion of the conical base 8 and the water will circulate around and gain entrance to the interior of the sleeve and find its em't through the delivery pipe 14. When it is desired to blow off the lighter particles floating on the surface the valve is opened and the undesired oil or scum will be evacuated. By the opening of the valve 10 a similar evacuation of the solid particles collected in the dependent portion of the base will be removed.
What I claim is: r
A settling drum, comprising a cylindrical hollow-member having a conical base provided with an aperture in the dependent portion thereof, the top of said drum having a plurality" of apertures therein, .a flanged sleeve having apertures therein secured to said top in concentric relation to said casing and extending within said drum, an inlet pipe extending into the annular space between said sleeve and said drum, an outlet pipe centrally located in said cover and projecting into said sleeve, a blow-out connection secured to said cover and opening into the upper portion of said drum, and a valve connection forming a blow-out secured in the aperture in the dependent portion of said conical base.
In witness that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto subscribed my naine this 31st day of October, 1913.
