This invention relates to new and useful projectable bolt, the locking portions there:

/Vith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter Tully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.-

Referring more in detail to the draw 'ings, the invention broadly consists of the lock mechanism secured to a door such as in substantially the usual manner and having a spring latch 11 operable by a knob 12 and a complemental locking bolt 13 0'9- erable by a key 14 and an individual looking bolt 15 operable by permanentlyposi- 'tioned handles 16, said latch, complemental bolt and individual bolt adapted for reception respectively in sockets 17, 18 and 19 in the adjacent portion of the door casing 20 and through correspondingly positioned openings 21', 22'and 23 respectively provided through the keeper plate 24 secured to said casing, while an escutcheon plate 25 is positioned upon opposite sides of the door in the usual manner. v
Uomplemental b0Zt.-The bolt 13 consists of two lock portions or bolt sections 26 and 27 of substantially the same form and each having similar end. portions 28' in stepped block formation adapted for sliding con tact with each other and being rectangular in cross section when taken together and adapted for reception within the rectangular opening 29 of the front plate 30 of the lock casing and by which arrangement either of the sections 26 or 27 may be separately actuated whileboth of said sections may remain projected therethrough in their locked arrangement.
The lock casing 31 as illustrated in Fig. 13 is formed of three. side members having the forward members thereof provided with spaced lugs 32 adapted for the reception therebctween of the posts 33 carried by the inner face of the front plate 30 and retained mposltion bythe locking pins. 34, thus forming a rectangular casing. An intermediate support plate 35 is-positioned witlr adapted for movement in a plane perpendicular to the line of movement of the bolt sections.
The support 35 is provided with oppositely projecting alining pins 40 adapted to aline with the key- hole slots 41 and 42 in the opposite sides 43 and 44 of the casing, the side 43 being illustrated in position in Figs. 3, 4 and 7 while both of the same are illustrated in section in Figs. 5,- 6 and 8.
The tumblers 39 are each -*provided with a substantially semi-circular opening 45 in which one of the pins 40 is accommodated and having the central socket 46 of the key 47 adapted for fitting upon said pin when the key ward 48 is placed through the adjacent key-hole slot for operating the bolt section.
.The key ward 48 is' provided with an inner shoulder 49 adapted for engaging the side 50 of the tumbler opening 45 and upon a turning of the key from the position i1lus trated in F ig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 4 slide the contacted tumbler 39 transversely beneath the. pverlying bolt section 26 thus moving the lug 51 carried by said plate frorn its seated position within the end notch"'52 of the H-shaped slot 5343f the section to a point portion 54 of said slot. Withthe elements 'in alinement with thecontracted middle positioned .as illustrated in Fig. 4 the key ward 48 then engages the forward side of the substantially V shaped open notch 55 of the bolt section 26 and the lug 51 being in alinement with the slot portion 54, a further movement of the keyrotarily projects the bolt section 26 outwardly and positions the oppositeend notch 56 of the slot 53 in a position to receive the lug 51. The shoulder 49 of the key Ward being at this time re leased by this movement of the key from the side 50, the double spring 57 exerting an outward lateral tendency to the tumbler 39 imparts areturn sliding movement to the tumbler thus seating the carried lug 51 within the end notch 56.
It is to be noted that the elements of construction as well as the operation of the bolt section 27 is identical to that just described for the complementalsection 26, it being noted that the same or an identical key 47 is adapted to similarly actuate the separate sections from the opposite sides of the door.
From the above description, it will be seen that the lug 5l retains the section 26 in either its unlocked or locked position and v is shiftable by the key for releasing the section upon a sliding movement imparted to the tumbler 39 while the key is then free to longitudinally reciprocate the bolt section at will.
The support '35 is provided with an end block 58 adjacent the inner edges of the 'nounts 36 and is provided with a central end socket 59 having the end 60 of the catch shaft 61 journaled therein, while the opposite outer end of said shaft is revolubly mountedin a key hole form of opening 62 thefront plate 30.: The shaft 61 :is provided with, a head 63 having a single side projecting lug 6i adapted to be normally, positioned in alineinent with the support 35, as best illustrated in- Fig. 8 and in which position both of the bolt sections 26 and 27 are released and are free for actuation by means of the lock key 47. The outer. journaled end of the shaft 61 isprovided with a rectangular socket 65 adapted for the reception of the end projection 66 of the lcey and Whereby-theshaft is rotated for positioning its side lug 6i forwardly of the shoulder ofiiof-the desired one of the bolt sections. The lug Stis illustrated in'Fig. l0 as positioned in front of the shoulder 66 of the section 27 and in dotted lines in the same View is illustrated the said lug positioned forwardly of the shouldei of the section 26.
Bin indicating finger 67 carried by the outer end of the shaft 61 moves in the fiaring portion (38 of the key-hole shaped front plate opening 62 and whereby the position of the engaging lug 6-1 may be noted. A radial lug 69 also carried by the outer end of the shaft 61 and spaced inwardly from the finger 67 is adapted for forming therewith spaced stops for the reception of the clip 70 secured bya screw 71 to theinner face of the front plate 30, which clip is. provided With a semi-circular end notch 72 for journaling the adjacent end portion of the shaft therein. A spring 73 encircles the shaft 61, bearing between the outer shoulder 74 adjacent the lug 69 and the head 63, which head is slidable upon the squared portion 75 of the shaft.
' From this description it will be seen that with the lug 64 positioned as illustrated in Fig. 8, either bolt section may-be freely actuated but that by turning he shaft 61 by means of the key projection 66, the lug (3% maybe positioned to prevent the actuation of either one of the sections which may be desired, while the other section will be freely operated by the key: from one side of the door.

The cross head 79 is provided with an angular lateral lug 82 projecting therefrom within the path of the outwardly projecting lugs 83 carried by each of the bolt sections 26 and 2?. The latch tumbler 11. being normally projected, the normal position of the lateral lug 82 is such as to be brought in contact with either of the bolt sectionrlugs 83, When such. sections are projected. -By this arrangement it will be evident that upon a locking of either or both of the bolt sections 26 and 27, the latch tumbler. ll wili be securely locked in its projected position and thereby imparting additional locking facilities to the structure.

operable by means of a handle 16 upon either side of the door and the movement thereof by said handles is entirely unrestrained in either direction except when the catch lug 100 is positioned within the bolt notch 101 upon a turning of the shaft 93 through the agency of the key projection 66 inserted in the socket 95 at the edge of the door and which engaging of the catch with the bolt is only ossible when said bolt 15 is unlocked and y which agency it is prevented from being locked whenever so desired. Tt-js to be noted that a coil spring 102 encircles the shaft 93 hearing at one end against the lug 100 and at the other end against the inner face of the front plate 30, thus taking up wear and preventing an accidental turning of the shaft 15.
.From this detailed description of the entire construction the complete functions and operations of all of the parts will be ap parent. The spring latch tumbler 11 is operable in the usual manner by the door knobs 12, but is restrained from retraction by an engagement with elements of either of the two bolt sections of the complemental bolt 13 when locked. The separate sections 26 and 27 may be freely operated from 'their respective separate sides of the door when the catch indicating finger 67 is vertically positioned and at which time the lug 64 is inoperative but either of said sec-.
tions 26 or 27 is alone operative when the finger 67 is laterally shifted within the keyhole slot 62 in the edge plate of the door and at,which time only thereleased section is operable and from only one side of the door, while the other sectionis restrained from operating by the lug (34. The individual bolt 15 whenreleased byits catch lug 100 is freely operable by the handles 18 from either side of the door but is restrained from being operated by either of said handles when the lug 100 is engaged within the bolt notch 101.
While the forms of the invention herein shdwn and described are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim as new is g 1. A device of the class described com: prising a lock casing, an intermediate sup port plate positioned therein in spaced relations with and lying in a parallel plane,
to the side plates of the casing, separate bolt sections having complemental contacting faces and with portions of said sections positioned upon opposite sides of said plate and provided with H-shaped slots therein and with U-shaped marginal notches, tumblers provided with substantially-1semi-circular=openings,' one ofsaid tumblers being positioned upon opposite sides of the support plate and between the adjacent face of said plate and one of said sections, a projecting lug upon each of said tumblers positioned within the H-shaped slot of the ad j acent section, a key, a ward upon said key provided with a shoulder, said shoulder adapted for engagingiwithin the opening of said tumbler for moving the same longitudina lly of the casing when the ward is-in engagement within said side slot of the section upon a lateral movement of the latter, the said tumbler lug adapted for seating within the end notches of said slot when said section is at the extremities of its movement, a 'post upon'said support plate having a socket in the end thereof, the front plate of said casing having an inverted keyhole shaped opening, a shaft journaled at one end in said socket and having its other end partially rotatable within said plate opening, an indicating finger upon the end of said shaft Within said plate opening, said bolt sections provided with shoulders, a longitudinally shiftable lug member mounted upon said sh'aft and adapted for positioning within the line of movement of one of said bolt section shoulders and means for turning the said shaft. 2. A lock comprising a casing, complemental bolt sections slidably mounted within said casing and each having a side shoulder, a support plate within said casing and positioned between the inner ends of said sections, a post upon said support plate having a socket in the endthereof, the front Y plate of said casing having an inverted key hole shaped opening, a shaft journaled at the casing and between the sections of the bolt, said bolt sections adapted to be independently projected, and means for holding the latch in locked projected position when either of the bolt sections are projected.
4. A look comprising a casing, a sectional bolt slidably-monnted within said casing, a supporting wall arranged within said casing and positioned between the bolt sections, said bolts each provided with a forward shoulder, means controlled from the face, edge of the lock casing adapted to be selectively positioned in the path of movement of either of the bolts to hold the same in unlocked retracted position, and means for, positively holding either of the bolt sections in locked projected position.
5. A look comprising a casing, a springcontrolled latch slidablyqnounted therein, a sectional bolt arranged Within said casing,
a supporting wall carried by said casing and arranged between the bolt sections and constituting a support therefor, vertically sliding tumblers. each disposedbetween the bolt sections and supporting plate, cooperating means between the bolt sections and tumblers adapted to positively hold the bolt sections in either of their retracted or projected positions.
6. A lock comprising a casing, a supporting plate arranged intermediate the side walls or thecasing and positioned centrally thereof, a two-part sliding bolt mounted within said casing and having each section disposed laterally of the supporting plate, means within said casing and operable from the front wall thereof for selectively engaging the forward edges of said bolt sections to hold the same in retracted position, vertically slidable tumblers, means associated with each tumbler and positively engaging the adjacent bolt section to hold the bolt sections in either retracted or projected position, ,a spring-controlled latch'within said casing, and means associated with said latch adapted to be engaged by the bolt sections .in presence of two witnesses.

A look comprising a casing, a spring controlled latch slidably mounted therein, a supporting plate centrally positioned parallel with the side Walls of the casing, a sectional bolt slidablyenounted within said casing and supported on said plate, means for selectively engaging said bolt sections to hold the same in unlocked position, independent means associated with each bolt section adapted to positively hold the same in either retracted or projected position, means for projecting said bolt sections, and means carried by the spring-controlled latch adapted to be engaged by saidibolt sections when the same are in projected pmition to hold the spring latchin locked projected position. 7 In testimony whereof I aliix my signature anon same.
