` square bore or socket for this purpose. The other end of the casinghas asimilar heed member 9 preferably fitted into the end of the casing in the saine manner as the heed f member 5, This head ineinher 9 hes an integral central journal bearing 1G in which a large short shaft 11 rotates es clearly shown in'liig. Q.. The inner end of this short shaft 11 has e central bore'12 which isA 2@ circulaiin. section and which supports the corresponding end 18 of the square shet S,
the end portion 13 of seid square shaft being formed 'circuler in section so es not to interfere withthe rotation of the short shaft g5 11. The short` shaft 11, es is seen, progects through the end of the casing and eii'ords siiiteble ineens fordconnecting it with the appratus or mechanism which ectuates the registering'device and which is to lieve its zo operations registered. 0n the inner end of theshortshaft 11 1 form an integral disk 141 which serres as e suitable means tor cornmnnicating the motion of the short shaft 11 to the-iirst or adjacent end counting wheel. A of the series.
' By reference more particularly to Figs. 3, A4iand 5 it will be seen that the inner peripherieso' the rims 'of the counting wheels have annuler series of gear teeth 16 located on 4or `corresponding sides of the webs 3 and nroi jectingradiavlly inward. The short shaft 11, es' before mentioned, is adapted to be connected directly or indirectly with the mechenism which drives the registering device and which is to have its operations counted.
Seid shaft may be connected in any desired manner to said mechanism. The motion of the shaft is connected to one end oi' the series of counting wheels through the medium of the disk 14 and the teeth 16 onjthe inner periphery of the adjacent or unit counting Wheel A. As shown more particularly 1n Fig. 2, this disk 1d has peripheral teeth or projections'lea which mesh with oriit the J5 teeth 16 on the inner periphery of the adjacent or unit counting Wheel A sothat said counting Wheel and diskifl are virtually locked together and the rotations oi" the disky 14 Willlbe imported to the said countingi9 Wheel. The rotations of said counting wheel will be transmitted tothe other counting Wheels of the series in e manner which 1 will now describe. These teeth constantly mesh With corresponding sets of Vteeth 17 :it

sting they counting Wheels. On the other side of the Webs 3 the counting Wheels are each provided with two teeth 20 of identically the suine form and dimensions as the series of teeth 16 above mentioned, these two teeth projecting radially inward. The remaining portions 21 of the internal peripheries of the counting Wheel riin is left blank so that there will be no (3o-action between the counting wheels and their corresponding transfer pinions except when theirtwo teeth 2() ere in engagement with said transfer pinions. On the same side of the web 3 each counting wheel has an internal peripheral portion This portion 2Q is of a diameter the same as that of the circle in which the inner ends of the teeth 2O lie, and is :lree of projecting teeth. The space 23 between the two teeth :20 however extends into this internal peripheral portion 22 as shown clearly in Fig. 5. Euch transfer pinion as shown in the drawings.l is provided with teeth conforming to the teeth 16 and 20 of the counting Wheel and adopted to mesh therewith. rlhese pinion Wheels occupy the space between the counting wheels and are long Y enough to bridge adjacent counting Wheels.l ln other; words, one transfer pinion is common to two adjacent Icounting Wheels; hence it will be seen that when one of the counting vwheels is rotated a. complete revolution its two teeth`20 will impart to its transfer pinion' e fraction of u. revolution corresponding to two ofits teeth and this will in turn actuate the adyacent counting wheel next in the series the seme fraction of a revolution.
rihese counting wheels are preferably arranged euch numbered from zero to 9 inclusive on the basis of o. counting system in multiples of ten and the teeth'are correspondingly. proportioned so that a 'complete rotation of one counting Wheel Wilhthrough the medium of itstrzinsfer pinion and the series of teeth 1G, advance the counting Wheel next highest in order one tenth of a revolu tion. rilhese parts may-of course be varied to meet the requirements o1c the particular counting system employed.
ln order to prevent the rotation of the trensfer'pinions und consequently the count .ing Wheels which they drive except when the transfer teeth F20 :ire in mesh" they are provided with extensions 25 orrnlternete teeth. 20; These extensions are long enough to enter the Spaces 23 and allow the pinions to During the 'remaining part of the rotation of the counting Wheels "these extensions'l ride against the inner peripheral portions 22 of the counting Wheelsin such manner as to lock the transfer' pinions, against rotation but at the same time permit the rotation of A the counting iiiheels. 'lfhelfaces 260i theseg extensions 25, as will be seen, are :wrongedat such en angle that they. conform substan a purality of interchengeable beermg'members remevably mounted en said spinde in end to end relation, a pluraity of counting Wheels eac-h mounted en one ei said bearing members end having means coperetimg with edjaent comming Wheels for impartnext adjacen: Wheels.
