Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 2, 15912. Serial No. 734,585.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, hnenmnn S. Mon- RLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richland, in the county of Baker and tate of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Water-Power Devices, of which the following is e specification.
v Ehis invention relates to a water power de 'ce which is adapted to be mounted within a sluice-way or the like, wherein it is completely submerged within the current of 1 Water, theprimary "object thereof being to when passing into the power sweep thus v 'ooiistmction, com
provide-a device of this character including a pair of wooed shafts having sprocket wheels mounted thereupon, spaced chains mounted upon said Wheels, and a plurality of pivoted vanes attached to said chains and. ,ade ted to cause operation of the said shafts during longitudinal movement through the sluice-way in one direction, in the newer sweep only, the said vanes being unad posite direction. This construction of the power device andiits disposition within the sluice-way being provided so that the Water current may not upon the vanes during a considerable len h of movement thereo' A further "object of the invention isto' ,provide e device of this character having means for limiting the movement of the pivoted vanes into their operative position.
, A still further object is, the provision of the flexible'bracing members adapted to ease :the motion of the; vanes osthey gravitate 'l-downwardly into their operative position %ireventing excessive shock upon contact of ,hegven s with their respective limiting in'zemhers. v ,Zfhe' invention consists in the features of hihatiomend arrangement of perts 'hereinetter fully described. end
' claimed, i'eferenceiheing -hed to the ec'companying droning, n which.:

the said shafts, one sprocket wheel on each shaft being in alinement with one sprocket wheel upon the other shaft. An endless chain 5 connects the slicing sprocket wheels 01 each pair, and these chains 5 are adapted to be connected at spaced points by a plurality of swinging vanes 6 which are pivotedto the said chains as at 7. Each vane is transversely curved adjacent its pivoted inner edge as at 8 and is again curved, similerly adjacent its outer edge as at 9 so as to form a. sort of pocket, which construction prevents the water from readily escaping: past the same after its impact therewith. "in order to cause the water to impinge even more forcibly against the vanes, each vane is adapted to be maintained in an inclined osition, as shown in the drawing, by means of the limiting members 10, which are secured to the links on both'chains adjacent ,the links to which the corresponding vane 18 pivoted. These limiting members serve efi'ectively to brace the vanes against the force-of the current, in addition to Innintaining the same in the proper angular relation to the supportingcheins. A pair of the power sweep he chains at this point.
are essin. over the upstream sprocket wheeo en thus, the outer faces of the spaced lugs thereupon will be separated by distance then when either in the which feet will he clearly apparent upon reference to Fig, 1. Thus, each value will not fall suddenly upon its limiting members es, it graivitates into the power sweep, but the strain will come to bear upon its flexible bracing members, this eesini its motion t e limitin and perxhittingiit to strike memberslwithout excessive shock. Gneo the shofteiwhicl i inthis instance is shown vice, the vanes being in collapsed position glpon the uppermost stretches of the supporting chains when in this sweep.
As the vanes lie flat against the portions of the supporting chains to which they are attached when in the operative sweep of the device, they 'occupy a very limited amount of vertical space, thus permitting the top portion of the device to be positioned in close proximity to the top wall of the sluice way. This permits the use of wide vanes the Width thereof being entirely dependent upon the space between the lower portion of the device and the bottom portion of the sluice-way.
It is to be understood that this power device is peculiarly adapted for use in a sluiceway of the construction described, but that it may be used in any open stream of water,
vane for limiting its movement into operative' position projecting outward from the element, and a flexible member connecting member provided. in connection with each each vane with the said element at a point disposed at the opposite side of the vane from the first-named limiting member, each flexible member being adapted to be drawn taut when the corresponding vaneis in 'engagement with its respective limiting member.
