Application filed April 19 To all 1 371 am it may concern I lie it known that I, ERNEST F. SIBELL, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to collars of the type known as turn-over or turn-down collars in volving the usual inner and outer bands formed from the same piece of material.

The primary object of the invention contemplates the provision of a turn-over collar wherein the tie or cravat is held in proper place by means of two spaced apart strips arranged between the collar bands, one near each end or extremity of the collar. A further object of the invention is to provide means for retaining the tie in proper place with respect to the collar flaps or ends, thus preventing the falling of the tie or bow below the meeting ends of the collar, and at the same time insuring a neat and attractive fastening for both the collar and the tie. i

A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of means including a reinforcing strip adapted to be secured to the collar extremities for eiiectually'supporting the collar flaps in proper place, and under certain conditions preventing the collar from wilting at the meeting end thereof. y

The above and, additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preierred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed outin the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application. I

In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in whicl v Figure l is a front elevation of the collar constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is an elevation partly broken away, illustrating the manner in which the tie 1s fastened to the collar. ,2 the inner band, the latter being, somewhat longer than the band 1 for the purpose of creating flaps 3 oi any of the well known shapes. The said two bands, 1 and are preferably composed of a single piece or material bentas at 4 for the purpose oi creating the two collar sections oigbands, the lower edge of the said two bands beings stitched or otherwise sewed as at 5 through out the greater portion of the length thcreof. The lower-edges of the two bands are stitched together toa point 6, the said point 6 being in spaced relation to the extremities of the bands 1 and 2 so as to form the flaps 3 froln'a continuation of the said band 2.

To reinforce the flaps 3, a strip 7 is provided, the said strip being stitched to the said band 2 throughout its upper edge and extending as at 8 in a curved line to the point 6, thereby supporting the said flaps 3 through their entire length, thus preventing wilting of the collar at this particular point. The usual button holes 9 are formed within the flaps 3 for the purpose of fastening the collar over the ordinary collar button (not shown). J

A rear collar button hole 10 is formed within a strip 11 sewed upon the inner face of the band 2 as at 12. this construction permitting the desired fastening of. the collar at the rear thereof without allowing the collar button to contact with the'tie or cravat or in any way interfere with the sliding of the latter between the passageway formed by the provision of the said two bands 1 and 2 should the tie be arranged. in the ilsual manner.

To eifect a secure connection between the flaps 3 when the collar is buttoned or fastened at the front, strips 13 are provided, one upon the innerface of each flap1 3, and disposed between the said'flap andt e outer hand 1 near the extremities of the latter.

After 'buttoning or fastening the collar in the usual manner, the overlapping flap s adapted to be passed between the said strip. 13 and the opposite or adjacent flap, thereby fastening one of the said flaps in proper place with respect to theother or opposite flap.

After fastening the collar flaps or extremities as above set forth with the overlapping flap beneath one of the retaining 11o -minor changes in the details of construc-' 5 ton,

By tying the cravat, the strips may be drawn together for effecting "a close meeting front to the 'colla'r'and insuring a neat and attractive appearance at all times. The cravat when secured to the retaining strips istid inth'e usual manner so as to depend from the collar front as desired.

It will be seen from the. abovegtaken connection with the accompanying draw-- ings that a dropping of thecravat or tie "from between the overlapping'ormeeting ends vof the collar is prevented by the effective SllpPGiil created by the provision of the said retaining strip; that the said strips will permit the overlapping ends of the collarto beadjusted accordingto the desire andtasteof the wearer; that thereinforcing strip 7 will additionally support the flaps at the points that would otherwise be weakened were the saidstrips not provided; and that the bands 1 and-2 of the collar; between the flaps 3 thereof may be starched ,together when the collar is laundried as it is unnecessary when applying the cravat to pass the same between the said two bands.

It will be understood that. the above description and accompanying drawings C0111 prehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various roportion and arrangement of parts may e made within the scope of the apof the advantages of any invention. I

ivhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s:

1. A turn-over'collar including an inner andouter band the loweredges ofthe said two bands being connected together throughform flaps for the collar, the said two bands i being connected at their lower edge throughout a greater portion of the length thereof, reinforcing strips secured to the outer'face of the said flaps, a strip seeured'to the rear inner face of the inner band within which ithe rear button hole is formed, retaining.
