term supplementary combustion chambers, the gases travel to the row above by Way of the openings 0, o1 (see Fig. 8) and so to the openings p, p1 (see Fig. 9). From the upper row of chambers the gases travel to the base of the chimney g (Fig. 9). The latter is divided by a division piece 7' for a distance up the chimney so as to equalize the draft in the chambers communicating With the two sides of said division piece.
It will be seen that throughout our improved setting, the air and gases are caused to travel in the same direction in two parallel streams on opposite sides of the retorts and, we thereby insure not only a more uniform heating or cooling of the contents of the retorts and therefore a more uniform travel of the said contents down the retorts with greater eiiiciency of carbonization, but we are also enabled to reduce the initial temperatures in the combustion chambers and thus obtain economy of fuel and an increased life of plant.
Having now described our invention what Weclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In settings for vertical retorts, in com? bination, a plurality of horizontal chambers located at the sides of said retorts and means causing the air and gases which contact with said retorts for cooling and heating purposes to pass over the opposite sides of the retorts in twofpar'allel streams mov ing in the same direction, as set forth.
2. In settings for vertical retorts, in combination, a plurality'of horizontal chambers located at thesides of said retorts, a division piece dividing each chamber into two independent compartments, inletsand Copiesv of this patent may be obtained for heating, combustion and secondary combustion chamber, and means supplying parallel streams of gas' andv waste gas respectively to each combustion and supplementary combustion chamber, as set forth. y V
4. In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
