Be it known that I, CARNIG NAHABEDIAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county and State of New York, have vinvented a new and Improved Locking-Receptacle for MilkJBottles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a receptacle of the character mentioned having a lock which may be operated to release only when removed from the station in which it is placed; to provide a receptacle of the character mentioned, the mechanism whereof is simplified to reduce the cost of construction and avoid disarrangement; and to provide a receptacle having facilities for carrying the bottles in locked position.

One embodiment of the present invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing in conjunction with fragments of a standing structure, a receptacle constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2 -2 in Fig. S; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2.

As seen in the drawings, the receptacle has a rectangular box-like body 8. The body 8 is preferably shallow, and is provided with a solid top 9 and a bottom 10 having a passage opening through one of the sides of the body portion, and terminating at the inner end with a curved edge 11 shaped to conform to the average curvature of the neck of a conventional milk bottle. The open end of the passage is closed when the receptacle is locked, by a closure member having a side flange 12, and an interference member or leaf 13, upon which the said flange is rigidly or integrally formed. 1t will be understood that when the side flange 12 is closed, the bottle neck orhead is held positively within -the receptacle or box-like body 8. As hereinafter explained, the leaf 18 and flange 12- con* nected therewith are locked only when a bottle is placed within the receptacle.

The body of the receptacle is provided with a carrying handle or bail 14, which is pvotally mounted in clips 15 on said receptacle. The body is likewise provided at one side thereof with extending

16 and 17 are in reality but extensions of the side of the body 8 with which they are connected. The flanges 16 serve as supporting means for the receptacle, being inserted within the grooves formed by the overturned edges 18 of a supporting plate 19. rlfhe plate 19 is provided with suitable fastening devices, by means of which it may be permanently mounted' upon a door, window shutter, or upon a frame adjacent any opening having a closure member. When the receptacle is placed in service position on the plate 19, the fasteners or screws 20 are concealed and protected.

The plate 19 is placed in service position, so that the unobstructed end thereof is adjacent one of the members forming an entrance opening for a standing structure, whether the frame or the closure member thereof is immaterial. That is to say, if the plate 19 is fastened by the screws 20 to the door or window frame, the unobstructed opening of said plate is disposed adjacent the door or window. If, on the other hand, the plate be mounted upon the door or on a Casement window, then the unobstructed end of the plate is disposed adjacent the door or window frame. The object in both arrangements is that when the window or door frame opening member is removed from closure position, the unobstructed end of the plate 19 is exposed, to permit the introduction of the flange 16 under the edges 18, or the withdrawal of said flanges and receptacle connected therewith from the support Vand engagement by the plate 19.

`The opposite end of said plate 19 is closed by'an elongated lug 21. The plate 19 also serves as a 'closure member for a slot or aperture 22 formed in the back plate or v side of the body 8. The aperture 22 is pro- 'vided to lift a locking bar 23 from engagement with a latch head 24 with which the closure member, or the leaf 13 thereof is provided. The locking bar 23 is pivotally mounted by means of a pin 25, which extends through a guide flange 26 with which said locking bar is provided. The guide ange 26 is housed between

27 and 28, the'latter having a bracket flange 29 to normally support a horizontal flange 3() with which the locking bar 23 is provided. The flange 30, being horizontally disposed and in a plane parallel with the 4leaf y13, adds strength tothe bar 23 to prevent the closure member 'having the leaf 13 andl flange 12 connected therewith from -being forcibly drawn to open position.

It will be understoodfthatlthe ineck and j sign that `the sole means for releasing said lloar'from its engagement with the latch head 24 shall be the pad 31. Access to the pad y31 is only possible when the receptacle is re` moved from the plate 19, and if 'the plate l19 be secured to the standingstrueture 'in service position as above described, it is only possible to remove said receptacle from said plate when the door or window closure is open. v

The method offemploying and the 'operation of the receptacle is as follows'r4The plate 19 is mounted on the door or window v frame by means of lthescrews 20, a'nd, as

To do ithis, the leaf is l'raised to the position substantially as shown in Fig. 3 ofthe drawings, bei-'ng supported in position by the lip of the bottle. When now the leaf is swung to such a position as to close the side flange 12 upon theopening vin 4the side of the receptacle, the latch head 24: passes under and lifts the barv23, to thereafter fall behind said latch head and lock the leaf and iiange 12 carried nthereby inpositi'on. l As explained, it is now impossible to gain access to the latch bar 23, which can only be accomplished by re- `moving the window or doorl opening until Lthe Iunobstructed end of the plate 19 is eX- pos'ed to permit the withdrawal of the receptacle and Ethe flanges 16 thereof. lIf the *receptacle has had placed therein "a bottle of the character mentioned, the x'housemaid o`r owner may :lift the receptacle by means of the handle 14, and safely 'and conveniently-carry the receptacle and body to any desired or convenient station.y The bottle may now be released by ,placing one of the fingers ofthe hand within the aper- -jture 22 to engage thepad 31 and thereby lift the 'bar 23 :from engagement with the latch 'head'24. The leaf'13and flange 12 connected vtherewith are then freeto be swung on the pivot pin-32, to deliver the bottle.

Having thus described my invention, I

3. lIn a receptacle of the character specified, and in combination; a box-like body portion having an end-opening passage the edges whereof are `adapted to register with and infold the neck of a bottle, below the lip thereof; a closure member for said passage, embodying a section of the side of said box-like body portion; a leaf rigidly attached to the upper edge of said closure member; an elongated hinge pin to `provide for lifting and depressing said closure mem-- ber; a latch head mounted on said leaf tol swing to the inner side of said box-like body portion; and a latch bar pivotally mounted within said box-like body portion to holdingly engage said latch head when said closure member and leaf connected therewith are lifted to pass over a bottle disposed in said passage.

In a receptacle of the character specied, and in combination; a box-like body portion having an end-opening passage the edges whereof are adapted to register with and infold the neck of a bottle, below the lip thereof; a closure member for said passage, embodying a section of the side of said boxlike body portion; a leaf rigidly attached to the upper edge of said closure member; an elongated hinge pin to provide for lifting and depressing said closure member; a latch head mounted on said leaf to swing to the inner side of said box-like body portion; and a gravity actuated latch bar pivotally mounted upon one. side of said box-like body, adapted to holdingly engage said latch head when said closure member and leaf connected therewith are lifted to extend said leaf above a bottle held in said passage.

In a receptacle of the character specified, and in combination; a box-like body portion having an end-opening passage the edges whereof are adapted to register with and infold the neck of a bottle, below the lip thereof; a closure member for said passage, embodying a section of the side of said boxlike body portion; a leaf rigidly attached to the upper edge of said closure member; an elongated hinge pin to provide for lifting and depressing said closure member; a latch head mounted on said leaf to swing 'to the inner side of said box-like body portion; a latch barpivotally mounted within said boxli'ke body portion to holdingly engage said latch headv when said closure member and leaf connected therewith arelifted to pass over a bottle disposed in said passage; means, embodying an orifice in the side of said box-like body portion, achacent the free end of said latch bar, to admit a finger of an operator to lift said latch bar from engagement with said latch head; and a supporting plate to close said orifice, slidably mounted on. said body.
