APPLICATION FILED MAY 7, 1914.

JOSEPH PASCOE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
DOOR CONSTRUCTION FOB SILOS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented dan. 26, i915.
Application led May 7, 1914. Serial N0. 837,025.
To @Il whom it may concern Be it known that l, Josnrn Pascon, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Constructions for Silos, &c.; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use th same.
This invention relates to improvements in door constructions for silos and kindred c vlindrieal structures-one object of' the invention being to provide a double door structure in which two doors arranged in superposed relation to each other shall be so constructed and mounted that the lower door cannot be opened until the upper door shall have first been opened, and so that when cross bars on said doors are used as the rungs of a ladder, the weight will be transmitted directly to the lower breast plate or sill of the frame and the hinges be thus relieved from strain or sagging which would be otherwise incident to downward pressure upon the doors.
A further object is to provide simple and efficient means for hinging superposed doors of the character specified so that the doors may be opened or closed independently without binding conflict with each other, and at the same time utilize a single shaft to form the pintle partitions of the hinges of both doors.
lVith'these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain nevel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, is a front elevation showing a door ture embodying my improvements; is a vertical sectional view; Fig. 3 is a horizontal -sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view showing the manner of connecting the hinge bails 11 and 12 with the shaft 10.
1, 1, represent the uprights or stiles of the door frame of a silo or similar structure, the sill and crown rail of said frame being formed by bars or breast plates 2, 3 bolted to the stiles and having their inner straight portions disposed between the inner edges of the stiles and extending from one to the otherto form abutments for doors 6, 7 as shown in Fig. 2. lt will be understood that Figure 1 strucproximity Fig. `2 v a silo will be provided with a vertical series of such door frames as above described, and each cross-bar or breast plate, except those at the top and bottom of the series, may be made to serve both as a sill for one frame and a crown rail for the next lower frame.
Two hinged doors 6, T are provided for each door opening and these doors are disposed in superposed relation to each other,j the lower edge of the upper door 6 being recessed tol form a depending flange 8 to engage an upwardly projecting flange E) formed by recessing the upper edge of the lower door T, so as to prevent the lower door from beingI opened until the upper door shall have been first opened, or both doors may be opened simultaneously.
A single shaft 10 is revolubly mounted at its ends between the sill and crown rail in to one of the stiles, and the arms of bails 11-12 pivotally attached to the respective doors, are connected. The arms of the bail 11 for the upper door 6 are rigidly secured to lthe shaft 10 so that when said upper door is opened or closed the shaft will be rotated. The arms of the bail 12 for the lower door 7 are provided at their free ends with eyes 13 which loosely embrace the shaft freely therein. Thus the upper door may be swung independently of the lower door, and the latter m-ay be swung in dependently of the upper door when the latter is open. lt will thus be seen that my improvements provide hinge connections which permit the separate swinging of the two doors, and that the single shaft 10 serves as the pintle portion of both hinge structures.
Each of the two superposed doors is provided on' its outer face near its respective edges with vertical cleats 14, 14a-the cleats of the upper door alining with and adapted to rest upon the cleats 14 of the lower door, and the cleats of the lower door being adapted to rest upon the sill. The cleats 14--14 of each door are connected by cross-bars 15 secured thereto by bolts 16 and on these same bolts. latch levers 17 are mounted and adapted to cooperate with beveled plates 18 on the stiles to secure the doors in closed position.
The cross-bars 15 constitute the rungs of a ladder, and by the arrangement of cleats above described, the weight applied to these cross-bars or rungs will come upon the alining cleats and be sustained by the solid abutment of the cleats of the lower door upon the sill of the door frame,-thus` relieving the pintle rod to prevent sagging and positioned 25 inge mountings from all strain which t'o accurately engage the upper end of and might otherwise be incident to the applicabe supported by the lower door `when the tion of weight vertically upon thedoors, and latter is in place upon the sill.
