Description
i mi ffm To all persons to whom these presents mag/come.- Be it knownthat I, OHABLES ELBRIDGE SMITH, 'of Lowell, of the county ofMiddlesex and State of' l `Massachu`setts, have invented a new and useful Im- `proveiuent in Shuttles for Looms; and dohereby declare they same to `be `fully1des'cribed in the following i specification and represented in: the laccompanying' i drawing, which' denotesa longitudinal section lof a shuttle provided with my improvement.'
In such drawing The bodylof the shuttle is shown at A, B being the spindle, which is supported on a pivot l `or center pin', a,`go iuglthrou`gb the said bodyA. y i `From the head b of theispindle, an arm, cis exl "tendedback, in manneras shown'. l
There are attached to'th rear part of such arm twosprings, O D,"oue1 bengfjlaid` on. the other, and both being united to the-spindle-armc by'a strong L serewor rivet, (l, going through them. The lower of the lsaidrspriugs is formed `to serveas a catch,.to hold the bob-bin upon the spindle as an ordinary spring-catch'does, that is, 'by taking intoa groove in .the'headof the bobbin. Y i v 1 The inner spring rests against a pin, e, going transversely through the body'ofthe shuttle, audarranged inmanner as represented. l. l p The said inner" spring'I form with a groove, j, ex-
tending transversely across t,. such groove being to l highest position, and also Awith the pin, to determine such position of thespindle.- Y V The groove f, with Athelpin e, serve to stop the spindle, or' prevent it from beingpulled'up against y that part-of the shuttle-body which, is immediately over or contiguous `tol its head,ti1ereby`avoiding dani er of bending the spindle and breakingv away the `wood of the shuttle during the act of pulling up the spindle. y 1 y y The stop-groove inthe spring'admits of the wood of` the body' beingprojected'over thehead lin manner n as shown, not only tomake al better finish, but to opreceive the pin e when 'thefspindle is elevated to its i 'y cnAnLnS nLBRmenSMiTn, or' LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS, vAssrenon .To AnniziSnLr, Joan S. crate to protect the head and joint of the spindle from fibrous accumulations liable to gather iii-the pivot. l
:It willbe evident that the more thatpart of thel shuttle-bodywhich is. immediately back of the spin'-' lprotected by the wood and thev 'bobbinhead from gathering librons accumulations or extraneous matters while the spindle may be iu use. v
- :Th t'wo separate springs are usedinorder to have sufficient power to hold the spindle, when down, in
the body, and the shuttle' is in use, and' also to hold vthe lobbin on the spile without causing the-latter to` be thrown up more or less by the catch.
1The catch, 'being separate from and operating inde*- pendeutly of' the auxiliary spring,- exerts'littlepowerV to throw the bobbin upward in the shuttle when the -bobbin is down, the auxiliary spring', by acting against the inner spring to. receive the p in euuder circum-v stances as hereinbefore explained.
2. The improved 1oon1shuttle,"as made with the springs C D, lthe notch f, and thc pin e, arranged and applied to the shuttle-body, andthe spindle-arm c, as
set-forth, Vand with the shuttle-body extended 'over so as to cover the `spindle-head, all substantially as described and represented.
CHARLES ELBRIDGE SMITH.
