Referring to the drawings, 1,is astructure to which the chuteis hung, in the present instance. This structure' is located, as illustrated in. Rivoted at 12 at the outer end of the chute 6 v1sy a depending chute 13 made of a series of element 14 connected together' by pivots l5. `This construction enables the depending section to loe shortened by turning up the lowerV element and, as the depending portions are shortened, these elements may be turned up to ride over the portions 6 of the chute, as illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. 2.. The elements are raisedby a rope 16, which may be operatedfrom the fioor 2 or from a platform 17 secured to one side of the chute near the point Where the depending portion is hung to the inclined portion G.
The chute 6 preferably has a cover 18 slotted throughout its length, as shown, and on this cover are rails for carrying the 'upturned sections 14 oi' the depending portion When they are turnedover onto 'the chute, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. rlhe loiigg'itudin nal slot allows for the inspection of the interior of` the chute., so that an operator standing on the platform 17 can see that the coal is properly fed through the chute.

Secured to the lower end of the pivot pins 19 for the delectors 20 are arms 21, `which extend under .the chute and are attached to a longitudinal operating chain or rope 22.*whioh passes around pulleys 23, 2li and can be moved longitudinally by the handlever attached to a shaft having a Wheel around which passes the chain 22. The shaft may. he turned by hand or b v power, desired.
By moving the chain in one direction longitudinally the space between the deflectors isvaried so as to increase the deflection of the body of coai passingthrough the chute. By moving they delectors in the opposite direction the spnce for the 'free flow ci' coal isincreased. Thus the flow of coal is properly regulated and controlled., and disintegration of the lumps is prevented to an appreciable degree. By this construction the operator can regulate the flow of coal the depending portion 13. nths-case there @und ms?.
