Be it known that I, JACOB VVALLAGE SEE- GRIsT, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Palco, in the county of Rooks and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Boiler-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
`My invention relates to the cleaning of boilers and the removal therefroml of the mud and other sedimentation of the water which accumulates therein, and one of the main objects is to accomplish this. result without the necessity for Vdrawing 013: all the water and cooling the boiler as by the present method, and which method requires the services of two men forpractically one half a day.
A further object is to provide a device of this class which is readily operable from the exterior of the boiler at any time andwhereby the boiler may be cleared of the sedimentation or deposits every day and in a very few minutes and, indeed, without the necessity for drawing oif more than a relatively small amount of the water contained in the boiler.
A further object is to provide such a de vice which may be readily installed in a boiler without any material structural change therein, which does not interfere with the normal functions of the boiler, and which is comparatively inexpensive and not likely to get out of order to require repair.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accom panying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a horizontal section taken through a boiler provided with my invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary, transverse, vertical, section taken therethrough, somewhat enlarged; and Fig. 3 is a -fragmentary, detail, perspective, view of the device.
In the drawings forming a part of this application I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, comprising a transverse bar 4 having a plurality of longitudinally arranged strips 5 connected therewith by means of screws and nuts 6, Fig. 3, and preferably thereunder whereby they may rest upon the floor of the boiler 7, said strips being arranged between the several rows of stay-bolts 8 which connect the boiler with the firebox, not shown, and I also provide supplemental strips upon the outer sides of the series of stay-bolts, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Each of the strips 5 is provided with a plurality ofupwardly directed blades 9, preferably cut from angleiron as shown, said blades being arranged equidistant upon each strip 5 and the blades of adjacent strips being staggered, and I also provide supplemental blades 10 at the point of junction of the strips and bar 4 in order to secure the effect thereof for the full length of the boiler, clear to the front thereof. Detachably secured to the bar 4, preferably by means of a small plate 11, is a forwardly directed rod 12 which passes through the front plate 13 of the boiler, a hole 14 being bored therefor and I also provide a studingbox 15 for said rod and I also provide a nut 16 for holding the rod 12 in position when not in use.
In installing my device I first remove the hand-hole covers 17 and pass4 the strips 5 therethrough, said strips being made of flexible material in order to be enabled to pass the same around the forward stay-bolts to arrange said strips between the rows thereof, after which the bar 4 is passed into the boiler and the strips secured thereto by means of the bolts and nuts already referred to, the rod l2 passed through the hole 14 and secured to the said bar, the hand-hcle covers replaced, and the device is ready for use.
When it is desired to clear the boiler, usually when not in use, the nut 16 may be loosened and the entire device reciprocated forwardly and backwardly within the boiler by the handled rod 12 to churn the water in the boiler, thus washing up the sedimentation and holding the same in suspension in the water; after the water has been sufficiently churned, the outlet valve or valves 18 are opened and the discolored water bearing the sedimentation is drawn off, and I have found by experience that but comparatively few gallons of water are required to be drawn eff for each clearing of the boiler, and it will be noted that this operation takes but a moment and does not necessitate the removal of the hand-hole covers, thus resulting in a material saving for the packing thereof which needs to be frequently replaced when the said covers are removed for the boiler clearing by the conventional method.
My invention is very simple and is readily adapted to boilers of different types and shapes, the only alteration over the form shown being in the number of the bladed strips and in the length and shape of the transverse bar to which they are connected whereby said strips will rest and be slidable upon the floor of the boiler and at the bottom of the sides thereof in order to agitate the water throughout the entire length and width of the boiler.
lVhile I have shown a present preferred form of construction, it will be obvious that I am not limited thereto, but may make changes thereover, within the scope of the following claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is zl. The combination in a boiler, of a transverse bar, a plurality of strips arranged perpendicular' thereto and in detachable connection therewith, blades on said strips for agitating the water in the boiler, and means, external of said boiler, for reciprocating said bar and strips.
