LATCH FOR TELESCOPIC SECTIONS.
Application filed August 30, 1913.
To aZZ 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Trronms J. MITCHELL and JAMns A. MGCREARY, citizens of the United States, residing at Uniontown, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches for Telescopic Sections, of which the following is a speciiication.
The present invention relates to an improved latch mechanism which is adapted to be employed in connection with telescoping sections or members such as are frequently embodied in discharging rams for coking ovens, such a discharging ram being shown by Patent No. 891,850 which was granted to us June 30, 1908 for improvements in coke oven apparatus, the object of this invention being to provide a latch mechanism which embodies novel features of construction whereby each telescoping section is se curely locked in a retracted position until after the preceding section has been completely projected and the two sections locked together for unitary movement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which is positive and reliable in its operation, and which requires no adjustment or particular attention on the part of the operator.
`With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which z- Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view through the telescoping sections of a coke oven discharging ram constructed in accordance with the invention, the inner telescoping section being shown as fully projected and in position for being locked with the next telescoping section, and portions being broken away and shown in section to more clearly illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the position assumed by the parts when the telescoping sections are being retracted and slightly before the outer section has been completely retracted so that the inner section must be Specification of Letters Patent.

unlocked therefrom. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
of the latch roller upon the outer telescoping section, and Fig. 1 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on the line l-ll of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention, the reference character ift indicates the fixed casing or housing which is rigidly mounted in some suitable manner upon the support, the said housing being shown as formed of the vertical side plates 1 and the top plate 2, angle irons 3 being vprovided for connecting the upper edges of the side plates 1 to the top plate 2, and reinforcing angle irons e being applied to the lower edges of the side plates 1. An outer telescoping member B is slidably mounted for longitudinal movement within the casing A, in any suitable manner such as that shown by our prior Patent No. 891,850 which was granted to us June 30, 1908 for improvements in coke oven apparatus. This outer telescoping member B is shown as composed of the two spaced I beams 5 and the top plate 6.
An inner telescoping member C is slidably mounted for longitudinal movement within the outer telescoping member B, the said telescoping member C being shown as composed of the spaced channel irons 7 and a top plate 8. At suitable intervals in the length of the inner telescoping member C, trunnions or journals 9 project from opposite sides therefrom, the said journals carrying the rollers or wheels 10 which engage the inner faces of the l beams 5 and serve to support the inner telescoping member C upon the telescoping member B.
A bearing plate 11 is secured to the inner face of one of the beams 5, the said bearing plate being provided with a stub shaft or trunnion 12 upon which a roller 13 is journaled. This roller 18 is adapted to be engaged by a hooked detent 11i for the purpose of locking the outer telescoping member B in a retracted position until after the inner telescoping member C has been fully projected. The hooked detent 14- is carried by a transverse shaft 15 which is journaled in suitable bearings 16 which project downwardly from the reinforcing angle irons i at the bottom of the housing A, and rigid with-fthehooked detent 14 is a arm 17 which is provided at the extremity thereof with a roller 18. The arm 17 and hooked detent 14 project in opposite directions from the shaft 15, and when the arm 17 is forced downwardly, as indicated by Fig. 1, the hooked detent 14 is moved upwardly into :operative position so as to engage the roller 13 and securely retain the telescoping member B in a retracted position.
The lower faces of the I beams 5 are provided with racks 19, and a rack plate 20 is Vapplied 'to the bottom of the inner telescopuing member C, the central portion of the plate 20 being provided with the teeth 20a, while the side portions of the rack plate '.upon each side of the teeth 20:l are smooth as indicated at 20h. When the hooked detent or latch member 14 is in operative position, :as indicated by Figs. 1 and`3, the roller 18 of the lever 17 travels uponl one of the smooth side portions 20b of the rack plate 20.
The inner telescoping member C is provided toward the inner end thereof with a vertically disposed locking bolt 21 which is ffslidably vmounted upon a suitable guide .member 22, the upper end vof the locking :,boltzprojecting through an opening in the .top ofthe inner telescoping member C and terminating in an anti-friction roller 23 which is adapted to travel upon the lower face of the top plate 6 of the outer telescoping member B. The lower end of the. lock- .ing bolt 21 is pivotally connected at 24 to Vone end of a lever 25 which extends longi- Vtudinally of the inner telescoping member `C and is pivotally mounted at an intermediate point in 'its length upon the transverse pivot rod 26. The opposite end of the lever 25 is provided with a suitable counter-weight 27 and has a cam face 28 upon the lower side thereof.
When the inner telescoping member C has been fully projected so that the rack 20L thereof is about to escape from the main vdriving pinion 29 which may be mounted in any suitable manner, the locking bolt 21 is brought into registry with an opening 30 formed 4in the top plate 6 ofthe outer telescoping member B. A reinforcing plate 31 is applied tothe top of the said plate 6 at the rear edge of the opening 30, while a stop 32 is applied to the lower face of the plate 6 at the opposite side of the said opening. The nose of the locking bolt 21 engages the stop 32 when the bolt is in registry with the `opening 30, and the action of the counterweight 27 then causes the locking bolt to be moved upwardly so that the nose thereof enters the opening 30. The roller 18 at the .end of the arm 17 at the same timevescapes from the inner end of the telescoping mem- -ber .C so as to permit of the hooked detent .p r latch .member 14 dropping into an inoperative position and releasing the roller 13 ofthe telescoping member-iB. l'Thetwo telescoping members B and C are thus securely locked together so as to have a unitary movement and the outer telescoping member B released from the housing A so as to be moved outwardly with the inner telescoping member C. As soon as the outer telescoping member B has been slightly advanced the racks 19 thereof are brought into engagement with the main driving pinion 29 so that the members may be advanced by a continuous rotary movement of the said driving pinion.
The usual ram may be attached to the telescoping member C, and when it is desired to retract the telescoping members, the driving pinion 29 is rotated in a reverse direction. As soon as the outer telescoping member B has been completely retracted, the driving pinion 29 is brought into engagement with the cam face 28 of the lever so as to move the counter-weighted end of the lever upwardly and retract the locking bolt 21 from engagement with the opening 30 of the plate 6. In this connection it may be noted that the lever 25 projects downwardly through a longitudinal slot 33 formed in the rrack plate 2O so that the cam face 28 of the lever will be engaged by the driving pinion 29 as just described upon the retraction of the telescoping members,
while when the inner telescoping member C has been fully projected, the end of the `lever 25 may be engaged by the driving pinion 29 to assist the counter-weight 27 in throwing the locking bolt 21 upwardly into operative position. Vhen the telescoping members are being retracted, the engagement of the driving pinion 29 with the cam face 28 serves to lift the counter-weight 27 and withdraw the locking bolt 21 4from operative position so as to release the inner telescoping member C from the outer telescoping member B A cam or inclined face 34 at the inner extremity of the telescoping member `C is also brought into engagement with the roller 18 of the arm 17 so as to force the said lever downwardly and swing the hooked detent 14 upwardly into operative position. The telescoping member B is then securely locked in a retracted position and the inner telescoping member C released therefrom so as to be completely retracted within the outer telescoping member B. It will thus be yobvious that byv rotating the driving pinion 29 in one direction the several telescoping members may be projected in `regular order and coupled together for unitary movement, while upon reversing the direction of rotation Vof the driving pinion 29 the telescoping members may be retracted and uncoupled in the reverse order.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as-new and desire to secure .by Let-V ters Patent, Yis
