Be it known that I, EDWIN E. SLIGK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Westmont, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve- .ments in Compound Rails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to railroad rails with special reference to a rail made of two portions, the wearing portion being provided with two heads, so that when one is worn out it may be turned over and the other one used. I also prefer to make the wearing portion of my compound rail of very hard steel which is well adapted to withstand the service to which it is put, while I also prefer to make the base portion of structural or medium steel, which, on account of its toughness and ease of working, is well adapted for its particular portion of the service.
In order that the two parts of my compound rail may be produced by the process of rolling and at the same time be such as to fit tightly together, I provide the web of my base portion with a projection which has an inclination at its lower side and a head portion of greater width which is also inclined. The projection on the web of the base member is adapted to contact with a correspondingly inclined projection on the wearing member, and the inclined top of the head of the base member is adapted to support the correspondingly inclined portion of the `head of the wearing member. The two parts being incontact as described, they are secured firmly together by large bolts or rivets which pass through the web portions of. each member at frequent inter- On account of the inclined surfaces just described, the action ofthe bolts 4or rivets drawing the two parts together. has a wedging and tightening eiect, so that the head portion of the "wearing member is pressed `very firmly against theV correspondingly inclined head vportion offthe base memberand-as clearances are provided .between the webs of the two members,'the two portions can be drawn together more tightly from time to time, if required. Having thus given a general description of my invention, I will now, in order to make the matter more clear, refer t0 the accompanying sheet of drawings which forms part of this specification and in which like characters indicate like parts:
Figure l is a side elevation of my compound rail, this view being taken on the outside of the track and showing the ties and ballast on which the rails are supported. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional elevation on an enlarged scale taken on the line II-II of Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the numbers of reference on the drawings :-1 represents the base portion in general, 2-2 the base flange thereof, 3 the web, l the head, 5 the inclined upper surface of the head, and 6 a projection or locking strip on the web provided with an inclined lower face as shown. The locking strip 6 may have its lower surface substantially at right angles to the web 3 but I prefer to make it inclined as shown, as it thus coperates with the upper inclined surface 5 of the head t to maintain the wearing portion in proper relative position.

At and near the junctions of the two base members I'provide an angle splice bar which is generally represented as 13 provided with a base member 15 adapted to fit the lower flange of saidbase member, a web 14 and a head portion 16 adapted to fit under 4the head portion of said base member. The two portions of my compound rail are held firmly together by means of the bolts 17 provided with the nuts 18, Vor these may be otherwise secured by rivets or similar means. lVIy outside splice bar 13 is secured to the rails by means of the bolts 19 and nuts 20 as shown. The space between the abutting ends of my base members is indicated as 21 and the space between the abiitting ends of my wearing member is indicated as 22.
